The Japanese pretty much piss me off...with the whaling, illegally killing sharks, and feeding dogs to sharks. GO JELLY.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist (or ocean biologist) to figure out as the ecosystem breaks down and large marine species take a dive (literally), the clean up crew marches in. And big ones too!

Overfishing will eventually empty the oceans of fish, once we have changed the biological makeup of the ocean we can never recover what will be lost. The time has come for a complete moratorium on fishing worldwide for ten years to allow fish populations to recover.Fishermen will complain but they are the ones who have mismanaged their own livelihood. There are only a couple of things to say about commercial fisherman, greedy and stupid. In the not to distant future they will have nothing. How sad.

Here's a site with a bit of seafood advice. We already say 'it tastes like chicken'. Is 'it tastes like jellyfish' next :(, 'cause that's what we'll end up with the way we're going. - 2 years ago

I didn't even know they could get that big! That's what they get for overfishing and killing all those poor little dolphins.

In the recent documentary on overfishing, 'End of the Line', scientists predict that by 2048 there won't be any fish left ... but lots of these jelly suckers. We could pulp them to a mash and make little fish shaped meals. - 2 years ago

Seriously though.. great post.
A couple years back I saw a doco on, I don't know, Discovery, PBS, one of those... I have been looking for it for sometime now, but cannot find it.In that film they also went to places around the world shedding a light on shifts in marine life in the ocean, mainly depopluation of large fish of all types, and it included an interesting sideline on the Mediterranean.
To share a couple snippets about that (and fogive my foggy memory for the not-to-sharp or inaccurate details)...
1) I think it was in the Jamaican Islands they were revealing how the fishing trade there has choked horribly. In the markets they showed us where there used to be huge supplies of very very large fish from various species there were now not only significantly diminished supplies, but also absence of certain species (or families) any longer, and the "large" fish anymore are no more than half the size of what they used to get. They went out with the fishermen who "toured all the places" and described vast areas where they used to fish were there were no longer any fish there. And the places where they were fishing ...where there used to be major abundance, and of very large fish, there was now a great deal of scarcity of any fish. The filmmakers went to many places showing similar situations... it was really rather shocking.
If I remember correctly, most of the disparagement was attributed to over-fishing, or neglectful fishing of certain species, and also to the affects from world shipping (transport of life forms to otherwise non-native far off places).
2) A good deal of discussion also covered the marine plant life in the oceans, showing us all these (what the scientists/biologists consider to be unnaturally) drastic changes where species were either totally, or being totally, wiped out, and either nothing was replacing the life there, or a certain species came in so dominantly that they would kill off everything else. In some case such a species might plateau and then die out as well, leaving a barren zone.
In the Mediterranean there is a huge shocker. I cannot remember the exact details, but some aquarium plant has taken hold in major areas there that is wiping everything else out, meaning plants and fishes. It's really unbelievable (the shear magnitude of it).
If anyone recognizes my film reference here, please name it.

I am not going to actually use the word karma but I’m thinking it… more like nature karma. Like when you spend your life destroying the rainforests and then discover that your terminal illness can only be cured by a plant you destroyed. I think it works like that- balance. And no offense but the Japanese (the country not the race for all you people who try to hate) are clueless about balance. Their over fishing is disgusting so I say YAY JELLYFISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh well obviously if i am a critic of japan i could not possibly be a critic of the us or any other country. oooorrr... i just said what i said because this particular article happens to be about japan.... and also because in the whole the japanese government is known for overlooking the huge atrocities that are commited by it's fleet as they regularly fish outside their boundaries and break international law. i dont eat fish. i don't buy fish. i dont go fishing. everyone has to be responsible for themselves as well.

I believe south park touched on this subject last week. The jellyfish seem to be from a number of reasons, mostly polution, over fishing, and removal of many high end predators (such as dolphins and whales.) I also think its another reason though, has anyone else noticed the tremendous amount of plastic in the ocean? In certain areas, there is now more plastic than plankton.

Nature needs to rebel. I have no sympathy for Japan's raping the sea. They happen to like fish, but the fish are going extinct. They are like our greedy bankers and willing to kill the goose that fed them.
I quit eating fishyears ago. Hallibut has almost dissappeared. They use boats that rake the bottom of the sea, killing everything. - 2 years ago
