ElBaradei: U.S. Used ‘False Pretext’ to Invade Iraq

The_Global_Report
Outgoing UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei criticized the United States this week for using what he called a "false pretext" to invade Iraq. He said this false pretext has cost “the lives of possibly hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians.”

    • Bush used the wrong thing to go to remove Saddam from power. His removal from power was advocated by Clinton and Gore and supported by the majority of Dems to include Hillary. He could have just said, the treaty that ended the first Gulf War has been violated more than 1000 times by the Iraqis and therefore we have no choice but to respond to these repeated and hostile actions. The treaty was a TEMPORARY suspension of hostilities whose length would be determined by the countries who had agreed to the treaty. Only by ignoring the treaty that ended the Gulf War, and the history behind it, can we get our knickers in a twist over Bush "lying to get us into war."

    • How sad. 'Shock and Awe' live on American television, complete with pictures. It's amazing how quickly the American public was desensitized to war. People were spun by mainstream media and the use of 'talking heads' spinning war as entertainment. War became entertainment on American television. Sad, sad, sad.

What would it take for shame?

Unfortunately, no one was held accountable, so 'no shame'. How convenient. No accountability, no shame. Facts be damned.

    • I was telling friends (not good friends mind you, really just acquaintances) before the invasion that it was all about the oil and that Dick Cheney was the one pushing for it. Those friends are mostly ultra conservative southern rednecks and they all completely supported Bush and said that I was completely wrong and "If you’re not with us you’re against us!' and all that other bullshit. Now when I talk about it they just turn away and don't want to discuss it. Most of them still feel that Bush should have been allowed to stay in office until All the wars are over, basically as King. They are now pushing for "Rush Limbaugh for President in 2012". What a bunch of morons.

I never said they were smart people, or even having any real intelligence at all, just people I know mostly at my favorite bars. Good O'l Boy southern rednecks. But not all of us southern people are like them, thank god.

    • Yeah no shit! I remember having conversations with people before the war started, that were basically about how bogus all of Bush's reasoning seemed even without the benefit of hindsight. There should have been mass outrage by the the American people at the time to stop this war from taking place, but our growing ignorance and complacency as a people was and still is too much to overcome any great challenges. I fear people will look back on climate change and feel that same disgust, we had the info and the ability, but we did not rise to the challenge and will have to face the consequences.
