The Maine gay-marriage initiative went down to defeat Tuesday. But the real tragedy is that it should never have been put to a vote in the first place.

    • I agree, civil rights should never be put to a public vote. Would we put not quite related issues such as torture or refugee status to a vote? No, because the public in general is not always educated enough or humane enough to make good decisions. That's why we elect people to make these decisions for us, which they did.
