UPDATE: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6905337.ece
UPDATE: General Bob Cone is now saying that the shooter Nidal Malik Hasan is alive and in custody. Among the dead are two civilians. One of Hasan's guns is reportedly a semi-automatic weapon. The female first responder who took Hasan down and was originally thought to be dead, is alive after surgery.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33678801/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/
An Army psychiatrist opened fire Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 12 people and wounding 31 others, military officials said.
The gunman, identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was wounded multiple times at the scene but was captured alive and was in stable condition, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of the Army’s III Corps, said at a press conference late Thursday.
Eleven of the victims died at the scene, military officials said. A 12th died later at a hospital, NBC station KCEN-TV of Waco reported. Cone said that most of those who were shot were military but two were civilians.
Cone also said that a female first responder shot Hasan and was herself wounded and was being treated in a hospital. Cone said that Hasan was in custody at a hospital and that his death was not imminent.

They just never learn, media, military, politicians and nitwits on this thread still asking the same questions; what was Major Nidal Malik Hasan's motive for this mass terrorist killing? The speculations are all but the obvious to those who understand the tenets of Islam and the jihad imperatives against the infidels.
Media talking heads are even suggesting he was an harassed Muslim, they are suggesting he may have had "post dramatic stress syndrome'-- gee this mass murderer who yells out Allah Akbar is himself a victim! amazing, absolutely and cluelessly amazing!!- yes all but the obvious which apparently remains off limits among the political correct and the multiculturalism loons who are running our country and spouting nonsense in most of the above comments.
Where are those who see a spade and call it a spade? where are those who really want the right answers and not the politically correct answers as to why this happened and will surely happen again?
It is obvious that islam acted as the conduit for this maniac’s insanity to fester. He placed religion before duty in a calling that does not allow for such to occur. Why was it that him being a muslim, he was allowed to express and profess such beliefs without the appropriate alarm bell being sounded? I believe the public still doesn’t understand the evil so easily promoted by the hate preached in islam, and it certainly doesn’t help when the Prez tries to white wash it from the start, or MSMs pussy-footing around saying “muslim.”Will we see a massive demonstration renouncing violence and professing allegiance to the USA first before following the word of Moe by US Muslim residents any time soon in the future? Not freakin’ likely.

"A person behind counter stood up, and he said, 'Allah Akbar!' And just opened up on everybody"
NORTHERN UTAH -- The news of the mass shooting at Fort Hood Thursday hit close to home for some Utahns. One man says his daughter heard the shooter exclaim "Allah Akbar" as he opened fire.
We want to stress that no government or military officials are reporting that and there is no way for us to independently confirm that it is true....
The soldier's father says his daughter was at Fort Hood Thursday when the shooting happened, and she called him, frantic and upset, soon after.
"She said, 'Dad, I'm OK. Don't worry, I'm OK.' And initially I said, 'What are you talking about?' She said, 'Haven't you heard?' And I said, 'No.' And she said, 'We've been attacked by terrorists,'" the father explained.
He told KSL News soldiers were sitting in a staging area for medical and dental checks when the group was startled by gunfire.
"A person behind counter stood up, and he said, 'Allah Akbar!' And just opened up on everybody," the father told us....

Fort Hood shooter was member of Homeland Security Panel advising Obama. Of course. Why not? He was a "moderate." Until he wasn't.
''The gunman who killed 12 people today at Ft. Hood appears, based on current media reports, to be Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan who was listed as a participant in a Homeland Security Policy Institute's presidential transition task force last year.
The task force was not officially affiliated with the White House. It was a project of the Homeland Security Policy Institute, an independent thinktank housed at George Washington University, aimed at drafting policy recommendations for the incoming Obama administration.
According to the task force's May 2009 report [pdf], a "Nidal Hasan" from the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine was a task force event participant. Other participants included Senate and House staffers, Department of Homeland Security officials, Defense Department officials, and reporters for Politico, the Washington Post, and the London Times....''

The Military failed these dead and wounded soldiers
Most civilians do not realize just how utterly politicized the military is.
Beleive me, the individuals that make up the military are WELL AWARE of the problem, but there's not a damn thing they can do about it. The military works for the Commander-in-Chief. Another poster suggested that the military should not allow muslims to enlist. Great idea, but "the military" can't do that - they don't have the authority. What do you suppose B. Hussein Obama's reaction would be if the military, HIS military, started trying to institute what you and I would consider to be sane policies regarding islam? Our military leaders are not free agents, not in any sense.
According to Obama, we are not at war with Islam, nor will we EVER be at war with Islam.
And yet Islam's adherents continually disprove this preposterous statement.
Islam is at war with us and has been since the 7th century. It is unfortunate that our leaders don't know that yet.
The families of the soldiers should sue the Armed Forces for NEGLECT as a direct cause for these homicides. With all the things known about this cockroach they are definitely guilty of extreme negligence in keeping their personnel safe.
With this person's record, why was a discharge not forthcoming. Major Hasan had trouble from the very beginning. He harassed co-workers and patients with his religious beliefs and political opinions, but was simply put on probation. This should have been a clue to his superiors that Hasan was really not cut out for military service. Futhermore, his postings on Islamists sites and hair raising opinions of U.S. military personnel should have led his superiors at Ft. Hood to take appropriate action. Instead, this human boil was allowed to fester until it burst. People at Walter Reed and Ft. Hood should be removed for their negligence in this matter. Pandering to Islamists will not stop until there are real consequences for engaging in such behavior.

The Pentagon, the American military, the Army, those who run Fort Hood, are guilty, in their refusal to recognize the effect of Islam on the minds of men, in their wilfull ignorance of what is contained in Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira, in their continual pretend-belief that only the obvious "extremists" are a danger to non-Muslims, are guilty of criminal negligence. And the government of this country, and the governments of other non-Muslim countries who refuse to take Islam seriously, refuse to halt all Muslim immigration and work to diminish the number of Muslims present in our imperilled non-Muslim societies and states, are guilty of the same criminal negligence. Everyone in authority -- brief authority --in the Western world who presumes to protect and defend "the people," has a duty to learn about Islam. Not from John Esposito. Not from the sly propagandists, Muslim and non-Muslim collaborators alike, that is the True Believers and the hirelings, or the ideological sympathizers with Islam as "anti-Western." but from the articulate apostates from Islam, such people as Ibn Warraq, Nonie Darwish, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Wafa Sultan, Magdi Allam. Their testimonies have been published;t they are eager to help explain the Muslim mind, the mind of those brought up in societies suffused with Islam. But those who rule over us think they have no duty to learn from these sources. They prefer to listen to the smiling, affable, so-trustworthy Muslims on their staffs, or in the pay of the government. They are easily fooled. They are too lazy to do the necessary work that only they -- not their staffs, who prepare those simplify bullet-riddled Exective Summaries. Nothing but immediate, and detailed knowledge, of the texts and the tenets and the attitudes and the atmospherics of Islam, will do.

my nephew joined the marines and on one visit to his base he was apologizing because the drill instructor couldn't beat them publicly anymore. seems some bleeding heart mothers group found out about training and put a stop to beatings.
a guy can wrap his head around that; you know," the make a man out of you stuff ". a guy desires to be brave and held in high regard as a warrior and protector. the armed services walk a fine line, as they mass produce teenage fighters that are willing to die for god and country. all countries face the same problems, unless they don't expect them to survive.

My heart goes out to all the families of the wounded, and dead. I can't imagine what they are going through. My main concern about this entire incident, is why the army didn't do a more thorough investigation into Major Hasan's background. He was a psychiatrist at John Hopkins and received a poor recommendation when he left. He joins the army, was made a major, makes it known to anyone that will listen that he is against the war in Iran and Iraq and is deployed over there anyway. I don't understand how someone like that would be accepted in the army in the first place.
Just because you are a civilian doctor "psychiatrist", do you automatically become a major in the army, by-passing basic training and the numerous psych tests they give you prior to being accepted? Is the army that hard-up for psych doctors?
One more thing......where in the heck did Major Hasan get the bullets? Ammunition is locked up!
Obama says he will take care of those who are wounded, etc., etc. Well, if more care would have been taken in allowing someone like that into the armed forces, there wouldn't be any wounded or dead people!Magic12

The problem is that the military is so hard up for doctors/psychiatrists/whatever that they'll take certain people who should not be serving our country.
I know a guy who is currently a psychiatrist in the army. He beat the hell out of his wife, made her cut off ties with her family and friends for years, hospitalized her several times due to the abuse. She was in a car accident while trying to get away from him one night. She got a large settlement from the wreck. With the money, he made her make changes to her body that she didn't want so that he could have a trophy wife. She feared for her life daily.
She finally was able to file for divorce...when he was deployed to Iraq last year. She knew she had to do it while he was gone otherwise he'd find her and kill her.
This is a guy who is responsible for other soldiers' mental health.
Something's got to be done. There's got to be a way to prevent this from happening.

Dude, this is alot more *politically* serious than Virginia.
1) this is a direct attack on military soldiers in Texas, with some troops awaiting departure to Iraq or Afghanistan (not sure about Iraq; I live in Canada, but I think there are some guys left behind to help the Iraqi defense forces).
2) the man who did the attack is - *gasp* - a muslim officer, so this is clearly a message from middle-eastern terrorists to western society, as well as an act of treason (also very unlikely this guy was hopped up on mind-altering drugs).
I understand that Virginia and other University shootings were tragic, but unfortunately, this'll probably have more discussions amongst news agencies than any of the Universities, simply due to the nature of the attack.

I really am afraid this is PTSD-related, as (according to the AP report) the Soldier Readiness Center is where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening. So, this may be a returning soldier who is really damaged (and who wouldn't be?) or one who doesn't want to deploy. And, I don't support war so I can understand that but this is terrible.

I don't think the majority have violence problems but a far higher percentage do compared to civilians. The latest issue of Rolling Stone has a great story about a recent murder spree at Fort Carson army base. Many of these guys are going to be messed up for a long time after the things they've done and had done to them in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are going to need all the help they can get, you can expect a surge in armed forces violence when the bulk of these guys and gals return home.

I for one do not agree with your assessment that the majority of people in the armed forces have anger issues. Alot may be angry, but that would just be at the failed system of care they receive afterwards. Hell, when priests comes back from the mission, they are messed up, but most receive care and are able to rehabilitate, but there are those who either don't receive the care, of whom the care doesn't work for, just like the armed forces.

Make no mistake someone who comes back from witnessing the dark side and is non-functional in there former fantasy box is not 'messed up.' As for care
Sometimes 'care' can genuinely integrate a person into present time so they can continue in a non self-destructive manner

another thought, not only are there only 3 million people in the United States military (as Magnusdeus said) there's only about 20% that are combat arms (meaning go do the actual fighting)...so you think that 80% of people in the Military, those of which sit behind desks, drive trucks, run hospitals, recruit, do advertising, run supplies, do accounting, etc. are violent people?
Oh and how about these numbers...around 1,445,000 ACTIVE personnel with 580,049 of those being civilians. So are the civilians violent people since they serve as "active duty" members of the military?
Ha, how ignorant are you?
And then...Just because someone can go shoot a man who's:
1) Shooting back at them
2) probably strapping bombs to 14 year olds or training 5 year olds for the 14 year old's jobor
3) oppressing the people of the surrounding area and treating them with absolute disregard to human rights
you think they have anger problems and violent ideals?
Granted there's a FEW evil bastards in the military that probably get off to killing, this is a horrible/ignorant misrepresentation of the military and an absolutely ridiculous post.
