237 millionaires in Congress

Image

As unemployment hits 10.2%, Republican Rep. Darrell Issa is the richest Congressman worth an estimated $251 million. Perhaps this is what's really wrong with this country. We need some real people in there who know what it means to work for a living.

Next in line: Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), $244.7 million;
Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), $214.5 million;
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), $209.7 million;
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), $208.8 million.

Seven members of Congress are worth over $100 million. But here's the sad part of the story. These numbers are down from their highs in 2007. Ain't that a bitch?

The biggest losers include Kerry, who lost a whopping $127.4 million; Warner lost about $28.1 million; Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) lost about $11.8 million; and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) lost about $10.1 million. Let's take up a collection. Oh, never mind. The health insurance industry is already on the case.

    • Presdental candidate Ross Perrot was right. (not that I liked Perot) he said millionaires should not collect Social security insurance payments after retiring. We need a law prohibiting SS payments to millionaires. Just because they paid into it doesn't mean they should receive. I pay car insurance and get nothing back at the end of the years.

    • Only 227, I would of thought there were more. The others are dong something wrong. We should tar and feather anyone of them who votes against health care, extension of unemployment benefits, any bill to help those who need help.

    • Wow! Talk about bloated salaries. I had no idea politics paid THAT well! Great gig if you can get it. That is such bullshit. How can they justify this in the face of our downtrodden economy??

    • I think what matters more is how they got the money or what they do in Congress towards the poor. for instance, Warner brought Virginia's economy from ruin to one of the best in the nation while he was governor. He then wrote books and shit.

      Also, it costs a lot to run for a seat in congress. For instance in Northern Virginia, and not even in the heavier part of it, it costs about 1 million. Now think about that every 2 years....that costs money.

      While I think having 200 million is a lot, I dont think you can suddenly accuse them of not knowing what its like or not helping out. Its better to look at how they earned the money and who they are helping with their votes in Congress.

    • Will this show up on any media networks, evening news?

      & what do we have to do to pass laws to limit donations? I am positive that they can live good with the money we are paying them, people that want to be millionaires need to do something else like start a business or something, not govern.

      Until we fix this bug, we will never see fairness when it comes to corporations over people, NEVER and nothing will ever get better for the people.

      Wake up mother fuckers!

      When you are a hoe that works for corporations that have billions of dollars, yes, you will be making a lot of money, but at the end of the day your loyalty wont be to anyone else, but your pimp.

      I do not think President Obama is a prostitute. Just had to say that! I believe President Obama is trying. I think politics in America has become so divided, trying may not be enough. It may take doing!

      One thing that I can smile about is that I know they cant take that wealth with them once they are dead, only thing they will have is their souls that they will be judged by.
      Yes, you can be rich and have a good soul but I do not believe that people in congress do

    • Therein lies the problem with congress, 237 members, over half of our elected representitives are millionaires or more. How do you think people who possess so much can relate to the ordinary man and woman? They cannot. Very few people who reach a milestone as becoming a millionaire retain the memories of being less than average or even a little above average. It is an inate human charachtarisic to have once you have risen above the rest that you can no longer still relate to those who don't have the same. A few have managed to be very wealthy and to still see through the eyes of a common man. Revolutions have started in many countries around the world over the last one hundred and fifty years because of it. We as a people must must come to understand that we would be far better off as a country if we were led by people more like us, people who represent the population and demographics as a whole. Term limits is a dream that will never happen in this country, people who have reached the position of power are not going to surrender that position of their own accord. We must as a population go to the polls on election day and vote out the people in office for the people who run against them, many times whether we agree with them on issues or not otherwise we are destined as a people to suffer the same inequities that persist today. Millionaires don't understand healthcare, they have the best in the world and if they feel different they go pay their way to better care. They cannot understand losing your job, your house, going into bankruptcy and the depression that follows. For those who cannot feel the pain of those who are hurt in bad economic times, you need to find empathy and humility. For those in the pain you must become active for if you fail to do so no other person is going to step up and make your pain go away. Voter enforced term limits are the only way to free ourselves from the circle of nothing we have now.

    • I think a lot of politicians start out trying to change society for the better but after they are elected they become corrupt by a corrupt system and lose sight of their desire to be a "public servant". However there is no excuse for becoming greedy and dishonest. The majority of them should be voted out of office.

    • It's like when basketball players get to the pros and earn million dollar paychecks... What motivation do they have to stay sharp? These old, rich, white, CongressMEN can bicker themselves into gridlock all they want. They can still go home and enjoy their riches during their hundreds of days of vacation. Yay!

    • As ImConcerned pointed out, what is upsetting is not that these men make and earn their money. Mark Warner made his bucks on cellphones and communications before he ran for office, making all his money on his own.

      However, there's a problem when lobbying money makes non-millionaires into millionaires. That's bribing, what in Washington they call "lobbying" and it can easily lead to corruption.

      It's easy to hate millionaires, there is a culture of envy in this country against people who do well. If we despise them, let it be for the right reasons and not out of simple envy.

      The best thing we can do is to place a ban on lobbyist money going to politicians.

      You are so right. Obama rejecting the public option after saying he would accept it set a new "how to" for the politicians to skirt fundraising laws. I hope it was the last time. We need public financing!

      Some were rich before, but most doubled and tripled their swill at the corporate feeding bucket.

      Their wealth is obscene. In the last 8 years the wealth of the richest Americas more than doubled and the middle class decreased in numbers.
      No one needs that much! John McCain has13 cars and 7 houses that are in his name.
      I think they are all parasites. They could still be rich and do so much good with the rest of their money. Keep one million and give lots to the VOA, Salvation Army and perhaps build some kind of factory in deprived areas to create jobs. Too difficult for them to do real Christian things. These are the same hogs who wanted NAFTA so bad because it enriched them while it impoverished American workers. What a bunch of crap that wealth is a sign of God's favor, when its corrupt criminals who hav

    • No Wonder this cogrress dont give a damn about we the people. If we the people had some authority maybe we could make these dirty politicians lose some of their wealth and power to the people. And to think that these cheap crooks are setting the rules for us to follow and they will decide if, when and how we get sick and get treatment. Some of the more educated and intelligent constitutional Lawyers are right, our system of Government is in fact a two party dictatorship functionng as the "Good ole boy system".

    • Monicboom, are you serious? You think the super rich got there by working hard, investing their money and running a business? Wow, you and I will never see eye to eye on this matter. I think most of the rich got there by stepping on as many people as possible in their desire for a little more of the all mighty green. Plus I'm pretty sure having rich parents helped in alot of cases.

      But it all comes down to does someone having over $100 million dollars understand the daily goings on of someone making $50,000? Somehow I seriously doubt that. With that kind of money all these people crave is power. And we know what power does to people....

    • I have an idea! Cap of 70k to congess members with free housing and transportation. Outlaw campaign contributions and lobbying. Also, make it a heavy sentence for breaking this law. If you want a campaign endorsement it needs to be word of mouth and not linings of the pocket. Make it an honor to serve your country in this way. RISE OF THE MIDDLE CLASS! Furthermore, It shouldn't matter republican or democrat. If the voice of your state is heard and not the opinion of a lawyer then we will all be in a better place.

      Now I know why we cannot get anything passed pertaining to health care reform.
      Now I know why we cannot get anything passed pertaining to the middle class.
      Now I know why there is a war on the poor.
      Now I know why the rich gets richer while those without means gets screwed.
      Now I know why the government is corrupt and obstructionist.

      How Orwellian ...... oink oink we pray for change as the fat pigs feed.

    • Indeed, our government needs to have smaller salaries. Even the president doesn't get paid THAT much (except by his endorsers and lobbyists), but our tax money needs to go to helping us and not paying for our senators next car or condo. If they were truly in politics for the people they wouldn't accept such big salaries and they would donate it back to the IRS revenue or charity..... or me.

      Um....why do you think they are broke/homeless in the first place haha I wouldn't want them running the country as much as I don't want the majority of the current senate running the country, we need a ron paul in every seat of office. That's my dream government.
