Westboro Baptist Church protests outside Obama girls' school

Westboro Baptist Church, the fringe-of-the-fringe anti-gay group famous for protesting at military funerals and claiming that God is punishing the country for its tolerance of homosexuality, was spotted this morning protesting outside Sidwell Friends, the school attended by Sasha and Malia Obama.

Protesters were carrying signs with anti-gay, anti-abortion and anti-Obama slogans, slowing down traffic all along Wisconsin Avenue this morning.

One member, Megan Phelps-Roper, posted a picture on Twitter of the protest.

Westboro Baptist Church, founded by Fred Phelps and made up mostly of Phelps family members, has garnered national attention for carrying signs such as "Thank God for 9/11" and protesting at funerals, including that of Matthew Shepard, the student who was killed in 1998 because he was gay.

They believe that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, as well as the ensuing wars and even the mass shooting last week at Fort Hood, are punishment from God for tolerance of homosexuality. They plan to picket the Fort Hood memorial service this Tuesday.

The group, which is not affiliated with the Baptist church, protests nearly every day in Washington, D.C., rotating around the city. According to their web site, today they plan to hit a few more local schools and the White House, and will be at the Sidwell Friends Lower School tomorrow afternoon.

"Quakers?! Are you frigging kidding me? You pretend to be all non-violent, and you allow the most bloody, deceitful, evil, murderous bastard and his shemale sidekick to place their satanic spawn within your four walls?" reads the posting for today's protest at Sidwell Friends, which is a Quaker school.

The school has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Randall Terry, the extreme anti-abortion protester, has also arranged demonstrations outside the school.

      Im not here to argue with you to what degree ANY kids were harrassed. Harrassing kids is wrong PERIOD. Your dislike of Sarah is as obvious as my dislike for obama. But I at least have the class to not bring in obamas kids to any discussion in a negative way.

      wtf? 1) My dislike for Palin is nowhere evident. If you're trying to infer that i dislike her by my use of the word "beast," you're wrong. 2) You're talking about class after you've childishly used KARMA as an excuse for a type of "revenge" on those of us who didn't care that Palin's children were harrased. If anyone is bringing in anyone's children into a discussion it's you. "Im not here to argue with you to what degree ANY kids were harrassed," but you are here to pathetically spew shit...

    • During the military funerals they protest near where I live, a group of bikers park in front of the wackos and rev their motors to hide them and their hate speech from the families. The biker clubs are very well organized. They're over the line, maybe they've gone too far this time, and we can be rid of them.

      while I too would agree with a statement like "God Loves Fags", what's the point of following the protesters with a sign? Do you really feel you must change their opinions? They're a radical church of about 100 members, I'd say they're set in their ways. You'd be giving them just what they want.

    • They really gotta stop posting things like this. I lived in Topeka for a couple months. There just attention whores. In an interview I heard him say that he didn't care if people cursed or hated him, at least they were thinking about him, and his message. The best way to handle him is cutting him off from the media, boycott his outrageous(but legal) expressions of free speech.

    • I think the secret service needs to get involved. They have a serious lack of respect. Funerals!? Not very godly if you ask me. Can't even wrap my head around why people care so much about what other people are.

    • Disgusting, targeting Obama's Children. That's a new low but it seems like the right wing nutters don't care about civility or even borderline decency, seeing as they had pictures of Dachau at their anti-health care reform protest.

      Yeah I saw how all you left wing fanatics came to the aid of Palins kids when they were getting picked on.

      Karma is a bitch man.

      That being said. These people are freaks. God doesnt hate anyone.

      Look, I think targeting any person's kid(s) is wrong. Do I have a problem with Sarah Palin's hypocrisy? Yes, but I can't recall saying anything about her children. In addition, I'm not a "left wing fanatic." I get flack from people on both sides of the political spectrum and thats because I'm not an absolutist.

      Ihatethemall, there is a fundamental flaw in your reasoning there. Sarah Palin's kids were targeted as an after effect of her making them an active part of her campaign. Obama did not make his children part of his campaign and instead tried to keep them separate from the entire process. As a result Obama's kids didn't really get any publicity during the election, good or bad, and Palin's kids got a lot of publicity, more bad than good. If she hadn't thrown them out there, then her kids wouldn't have been part of the political disaster that was her vice presidential campaign.

      Again, as I pointed out a few posts down. Its OK in your mind to pick on someones kids if their parents puit them in the spotlight........That is a foreign concept to me. I would never harass a kid because of what his parents did.
      Sleepdirt
      And so what Palin isnt president. Does that mean her kids are targets. Thats as twisted as saying that its ok to pick on someones kids because of what the parents did.
      Current
      I was here for last years election. I never once saw you say anything in defense of picking on palins kids. Yet you get on here and defend obamas kids. Why is that?

      Is it right that Palin's kids got such public scrutiny? No. But there is a reason for it. The biggest whiner about the scrutiny that Palin's kids went through was Palin herself. She either didn't have the sense to step back and say, "my bad, I'll pull my kids out if you stop," or she just couldn't see how it was her fault. I still feel sorry for her kids, but it is her responsibility to bail them out of a position that she put them in.

      Obama did not put his kids in this position. Obama tried to keep his kids out of this position. However, other people decided that his kids are a good target. It is in part his responsibility as a parent to protect his kids from this, but at the same time outside forces should intervene because outside forces started this mess.

      You are correct though that it does not matter that Palin didn't become vice president. If she had won I'd expect that her kids would still be the targets because she was/is delusional. As I said, she brought her kids into the mess they are in, she needs to pull them out.

      By the way Ihatethemall, I like your new icon, and I'm not joking about it. Did you make it yourself, or did you get it from somewhere, and if you got it could you send me the link? I probably won't use a new icon, but you never know.

      @ihatethemall

      You're switching the subject from what I didn't say about Sarah Palin's kids, to what I didn't say to those who criticized her kids. But I'll repeat myself for you, I don't support the slandering of anyone's children.

      Palin didn't control the Secret Service and the Justice Department. This should be President Obama's 'You're either with me, or your against me' moment. This should not be tollerated! Leave his children alone!

      The you're with me or against me mentality can be a very slippery slope. Was it Karl Rove who helped it become a mainstream political strategy? Anyhow, the point is that although it could take many more years than any administration could possibly have, we need to get our politics back to the point where people talk not with blinding unreasonable passion that can't be budged, but calm intellect where people can find a middle ground or compromise.

      @current89:

      No I am not switching from one to another subject No where have I said anything about you saying anything about palins kids. The only thing I mentioned was the lack of defense of palins kids getting dragged into politics. I dont care who brought them in. A person with any class would defend a child. You and many others here didnt. And please dont bullshit me. You are a democrat and I seriously doubt you get shit from the left. According to your profile you have worked for the dnc in 04, 06, 08. You are a paid for tool of the dnc and your blind support of them shines through with every post you make. You recommended this recently:

      Please check out these links. There is a difference between discussing hypothetical action and advocating it. The Obama administration's official response:

      "The quotations used to suggest that Dr. Holdren supports coercive approaches to limiting population growth were taken from a 1977 college textbook on environmental science and policy, of which he was the third author. The quoted material was from a section of the book that described different possible approaches to limiting population growth and then concluded that the authors' own preference was to employ the noncoercive approaches before the environmental and social impacts of overpopulation led desperate societies to employ coercive ones. Dr. Holdren has never been an advocate of compulsory abortions or other repressive means of population limitation."

      Taking information out of context does not help inform anyone.
      ================================================================

      Your choice to recommend this shows your blind faith in the WH, obama and the dnc. Anyone who believes that John Holdren, the science czar, doesnt still hold the feelings that his book displayed even though he has never recanted those feelings obviously has blind faith.

      Sorry if I hurt your feelings. The truth hurts though.

      And I didnt attack YOU. I attacked your posts and your claims in them

      How could you possibly claim to be unbiased or anything close to it when your profile clearly states:

      I worked for the Democratic Party in 2004, 2006, and of course, 2008.

      Thats like rush limbaugh claiming to be unbiased
