The Maldivian President is asking nations most vulnerable to climate change to take the lead in reducing global warming. The leader of a country threatened by rising sea levels slammed rich countries at a two-day conference for doing too little to prevent climate change.

Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed says countries like his that are most at risk from global warming are looking not for what he called a "global suicide pact," but rather a "global survival pact."

I think that asking those nations that are the most vulnerable to climate change to take the lead in reducing global warming is an absolutely brilliant idea. There's an element of "help yourself and God will help you" to this initiative, as well as giving a fine example to those countries which most pollute and most contribute to global warming.

The whole "this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs" never kept me from doing drugs, it just made me thing that an egg sandwich sounded like a good idea because I had the munchies.

But it isn't a bad idea.

    • Much to my dismay, the fine example will be ignored by the biggest offending countries (like the US and China). I fear not much will change until New York City is under water and Maldives is a memory.

I wish I didn't feel this way. I just see little evidence of mandatory change for the good of the planet here. That is what is going to be required.

    • I wish that humanity could somehow share a collective dream which would transmit to all the feelings associated with losing one's home to rising sea level. If people could starkly visualize water washing their lives away, they might be willing to make small changes to forestall such an event: changes like walking or bicycling to work and using only energy-efficient machines and materials.
