Pandemic in Ukraine – Is it swine flu?

Image

An epidemic is in full swing in the Ukraine. Swine flu is a part of it - but so far only account for somewhere around 70 reported cases. Otherwise over a million people have been stricken with flu or respiratory symptoms. The death toll is 174 and at nearly 53,000 Ukrainians have been hospitalized.

Schools and universities closed, whole regions are quarantined and masks and medication are sold out in most cities and towns. Ukraine is also in the midst of a Presidential election which has politicized the outbreak.

If you're in Ukraine - let us know. Are people panicking?

I do not know if I have the swine flu - but for the past 2 weeks I have felt lethargic, had back aches, swollen lymphs, mild fever, and sore throat - expecially in the mornings and at night) think it is mono - but will not go to the DR and get tested b/c I do not trust them, and besides, hospitals and dr offices are the most germy places and if you already have a weakened immune system then you are more likely to get sick from the visit as well...

    • People are panicking or better to say they were panicking at the beginning on 30th October and the next week when it all started (announced). Now there are a little less people in the streets and I don't see lots of them wearing masks may be because they sitting at home. At the beginning of quarantine in one evening were bought all masks and lots of medicine in all drugstores around the country and that was quick. I don't know what happening exactly in west Ukraine but nobody does all we have are various rumors. And this isn't a very good sign as for me because I smell manipulation. Concerning Kyiv and East Ukraine there is no difference between flu epidemic which comes to us every Autumn only this time someone decided to make a show. Thats why way epidemic and quarantine started for us, Ukrainians, in the same time because before quarantine nobody was concerned at all about flu. And speaking about some most funny\terrible\"panic making" rumors there was one about plague. And about tamiflu it was brought to us unofficial by the price more than $100 which is too high for most of Ukrainians.

Also there are more of facts which are speaking against this epidemic: first of all why is it started in small town on west of Ukraine instead of Kyiv where coming most of international flights? There is nevertheless an answer that it was brought by Ukrainian workers from Poland than I don't understand why there is no epidemic in Poland. Average rate of ill people this year in Kyiv and East Ukraine are several times below from the statistic's level of previous years. All these death rates are also quite normal for Ukraine because of any flu epidemic. I already said that nobody know what exactly happening in West Ukraine and this is suspicious but I can tell even more that every years our doctors are being forced to write instead of flu ARD (acute respiratory disease) as a reason of ill. (government controls our health care system) And how this time they figured out that we actually have an epidemic? Because I'm more than sure that it was told as usual for doctors to lower rates of flu ill people on paper. But after plans were changed. I can continue but the most reasonable answer to all these facts is:

We have president's election in view month. And flu is a perfect way to draw people's attention from our political and social problems. There are two major candidates this time and the one who will draw a ticket of a flu epidemic "savior" will get quite a big boost of votes. Also our current president which lost all his support not very comfortable with giving up his chair and this is opportunity for him to change the date of elections. We already have "immune" from the most of our political measures. So they decided to bring it to the next level. God, I wish they turn their creativity to some real problems of Ukraine.

And this is it, the way how I see this situation from inside the country, great scary show and nothing more.

I can see that -> to be 'creative' for political reasons and focus on the flu instead of the election - happened with Pres. Bush in the 2004 election for the USA. People are so very swayed by their emotions that it is sickening. Not everyone can step outside the box and provide reputable opinions and composed thoughts. You have to read between the lines when it comes to political jargon.
