Obama considers domestic spending freeze

It's part of a White House drive to stem the flood of red ink after a year of stimulus spending aimed at boosting the economy.
As record deficits continue, White House budget director Peter Orszag said Friday it's imperative to start curbing the flow of red ink in coming years so as not to erode the fledgling economic recovery. But Orszag says it's a balancing act and that acting too fast could undercut the recovery.
Democratic officials say options include caps on the amount of money Congress gets to distribute each year for agency budgets.

No mention of all that government waste in programs they were talking about....uh, why don't we go after that FIRST before we spend a couple more trillion on a hundred or so new agencies the current health care bill proposes to establish?

We can only hope President Obama is merely "considering" this. Unemployment is horrific and still rising. A larger deficit is infinitely preferable to massive unemployment which will ultimately result in a continuation of a deep and prolonged recession. The stop spending or we'll go bankrupt crue really need to take some ecoomics classes. I guess that would include virtually all of the right wing.
We can pay back the deficit and learn from Greenspan's mistakes. A fiscally and monetarily well managed economy combined with appropriate taxation can result in a deficit free economy. Now is obviously not the time to worry about the deficit and clearly is the time to worry about jobs. Spend away on stimulus.

The role of government is to employ incompetant people so they don't have to be on welfare. Either way we all pay for them. Ultimately it's better to keep them busy with something.

Only after he's spent billions on stupid, incompetent people.
This would be more funny if it weren't for the fact that I'm on this sinking ship and the captain that hit the iceberg will not be going down with the ship. He's too much of a coward (Obama) to even admit that he is and was wrong in many things that he's said and done as well as NOT done.

Sounds like a smart idea. Now if congress would only follow suit we might save this country from bankruptcy.
Here's an old post about congressional spending. In short it really doesn't matter whose the president so long as congress continues to behave without restraint.

You could always just roll back the huge tax cuts the rich have received over the past thirty years and redistribute the wealth created to those of lower income. But yeah, making sure nobody spends money sounds like a good way to stimulate the economy.

I have a better idea for the idiots in the White House. Lets go ahead and freeze foreign spending, like we truly care about our economy. Half the people posting here can't realize that their going to still spend billions on pointless wars while cutting the budgets for public school football teams and other domestic activities that are crucial to our economic livelihood.

if we didn't care about, the climate crisis, the dying nations, the future of the planet, and all the other bullshit, why should we care about this mediocher attemt at presidential caring, this man had no chance, from day one, of effectively doing anything to tackle what we are facing, none of them do, ever did or ever will. so when you buy your new car, put out the garbage, go buy food for tomorrow, think about who's lobbying for what, and whats in your hand, think about your prayers for a better day, for yourself ,for your children, for your planet, and for your president. Here's some research for you Ares. Republicans, although they claim fiscal responsibility, actually increase our national debt while Dems historically reduce it. We can take hope that this possible domestic spending freeze is a sign that history will repeat itself. We can't blame Obama for the economic meltdown, as that clearly did not occur on his watch.

Try $2 Trillion in wars including the unjustified unnecessary war in Iraq, his own meaningless stimulus package, billions in no bid contracts for war contractors and best of all tax cuts on the super rich.

All money is debt and until we get out from under the thumbs of the big banks running this country, there will always be a national debt. taxes won't fix the problem, freezing spending won't fix the problem because it won't happen.
HELLO PEOPLE, we're talking about America, the most irresponsible govt. in the world. We don't even have a viable manufacturing industry in this country anymore. Let's get back the money from those who've profitted from this illeagal war and stop letting wall use the pulic sector as a human shield from its bad decisions and consequences and the unearned bonuses that never end.

Good plan. I remember during one of the presidential debates, McCain stated that he would consider a domestic spending freeze, if elected; but I think it makes more since to enact a freeze in the second year of your term. Like the saying: it takes $ to make $. Our economy needed the stimulus spending it received under this administration, but now, we've got to let it marinate.

Spend on defense not offense. Half of the budget goes to military. Social programs are taxed separately. We should be selfish (something Americans are really good at) and take care of our needs first before we squander money on global military domination.

the tax code needs to be restructured. the bush tax cuts must go. I know they'll be afraid to do it because next year is an election year and the repubs will slap them with the "tax and spend liberal" bullshit, but it is the right thing for the nation. Obama should go ahead and grow a pair and restructure the tax code like he said he would when he ran for president. raise taxes on the rich to give the rest of us relief. the upper classes free pass needs to end now! they're ruining us!

Once again a Democratic president is cleaning up the fiscal mess left behind by their Republican predecessor. Clinton erased Reagan / HW Bush era national debt with paygo. Obama is cutting wasteful spending, getting out of Iraq, letting the Bush tax cuts expire and increasing taxes on the rich. We have a LONG way to go before we eliminate our national debt, but under Obama we won’t be hemorrhaging red ink every year he is in office.
