Small town Chief of Police brutally shoots caged dogs

Image

Wednesday, November 11, on the okay of the mayor, the Chief of Police of Corning,AR shot all the dogs they had picked up from town. They have since released a statement to KAIT channel 8 news that the dogs had been exposed to rabies, so they had to shoot all 6 of them. The local vet has issued a statement that she never checked these dogs, or established that they had rabies. The city had an appointment to humanely put these dogs down but it was cancelled Wed. afternoon, shortly before the Chief of Police, Jim Gronings shot the dogs. Our community did not even know that we had a dog pound, or that our dogs would be picked up if they got out of the yard. One lady in town has come forward to issue a formal complaint against the city, after she and her 6 year old son saw their dog shot by the officer on the 6:00 news. The city told her Wed. that she could pay $25.00, and get her dog out of the pen on Friday, but then they killed it that afternoon without notifying her.

    • It's getting so crazy, in every city and town, the police, the ones that are suppose to be protecting us, are worse than the criminals! They get off on killing, people, animals, the "power trips" are sick!!! We all need to ban together and get these "rogue elephants" out of power!!

    • Nothing gets me nearly as upset as animal cruelty - NOTHING. This is one of the sickest things I've ever seen. If this chief calls himself a man, he's wrong - he's a weak pig that has a complex problem. I hope the worst for people that harm animals - nothing less for this piece of crap.

    • Alright, I would like to be a voice of reason here, since there are so many emotional responses (and I can understand why).
I am a veterinary technician, and have been for the last 7 years. I have worked at animal shelters as well as veterinary hospitals and seen many many sad things, and experienced how disgusting humanity can be to our 4 legged friends.

In this story we see a very small town with very few people, little resources and probably not too much effort put into their animal cruelty laws. The sheriff was called to animal control, which means that this must be protocol if there are rabid dogs. The sheriff didn't jump the gun, he called the Mayor who said to go ahead and then called a Veterinarian who also agreed with the decision. Remember, Corning (a town of 3,600 people) is not New York. I have lived in a big city on the east coast for most of my life, and also lived in a small town. I have seen the difference in the mentality of the people, and the financial backing. You can label these people as "red neck pigs", but realize that you are doing this because they are white, if they were black you'd be labeled as a racist.

Has anyone here seen a rabid dog? I would not label them as cute fluffy animals. It is quite terrifying! They do not behave like a normal dog because rabies is a neuroinvasive disease that, well, makes them crazy. Rabies is not treatable once the dog has behavioral side effects.

Maybe this story will get Corning to come up with a better and more humane system for these situations. It is very sad that these dogs didn't get the benefit of a sedative to knock them out before euthanasia (and VERY sad that one of them was owned), but remember this is a small town with little resources.

    • I do hope he is under investigation for cruelty to animals. In small retirbution to his henious misdeeds his job taken, pets and children taken away. Not to mention a huge fine. Oh and maybe being neutered would cut down on the testosterone maddness that seems oh so common these days.

As an RN of 25 years it amazes me that we can kill companion animals at whim. Yet compassionate right to die movements are denied in most states.

    • After he found his common sense he would have to start looking for his head cause I would have blown it off with a shotgun if he had shot my dogs.

    • The town will have to exhume the dogs and send the heads for rabies testing. If the dogs were rabid they needed to call another agency to handle the situation.
The people involved made hasty, inappropriate decisions; which usually leads to the wrong ones. Most likely the case here. The pictures are ugly and insightful.

    • That last post picture proves that the dogs were not brutally attacking each other like the police chief said in his on camera interview. It looks more like the dogs are licking their DEAD companions.

    • The person that took the pictures is anonymous right now. I gave him my cell phone to take them. He is at risk of loosing his job, and is in danger of retaliation from the police. We can not let this die, they are trying to brush it under the rug. Thank you for your support. We count on our law enforcement and mayor to protect the law, and be as honest as possible, yet this is far from that reality.

Then maybe you know if the dogs have a history of being loose and violent? Maybe the owner is more responsible than noted? If a dog bites or mauls a human they can be ordered to be "put down". I'm hoping there is more info to this before jumping to conclusions on pictures.

Those are my thoughts! Who did? And why? Wouldn't you think the guy with the gun might not be too happy if he sees you taking pictures of him shooting caged animals?
On second thought, did these dogs have a history of being loose and violent? Maybe the owner has some culpability?

    • Is it that big of a deal? Cows go through worse...Or what about horses? Ever visit a slaughterhouse? Why do people give human characteristics to animals?

how many cows have you had for pets, or horses, and have you ever watched, with your child, while someone in authority pit a slug in them? This is sheer laziness on the fat pigs part, and shows just how trigger happy some pigs are. Lets start caging the cops and see how long before they start crying.

If you can't see that this is wrong on many levels I don't know what to tell you. It was wrong to kill the dogs before their owners had the chance to pick them up, wrong to not notify the owners or the community that there was a dog pound, wrong to shoot them in the head instead of the already scheduled appointment with the vet, wrong to lie to the people and say it was rabies, wrong to air it all on tv...etc

Okay, shooting the dogs is wrong....but how is it more wrong then putting a cow on a conveyor belt, putting a pneumatic tool against its head, and blasting a hole in it, often times not killing it, just stunning the hell out of it, slitting the throat of the cow, hanging it up side down, again...often times still alive, so that it dies of blood loss.

But your right....cows aren't fluffy so they must die. Just like if Tuna didn't want to be eaten, it should have had its own show in the 60's like Flipper.

We give human characteristics to animals like dogs because they are like family. If you ever had a pet cat or dog you would understand. They are living creatures just like we are, and deserve to be treated in a humane way. If they HAD to be put down, they have a very humane way of doing it - there was no reason to shoot these dogs.
