    • De Vinci is one of my idols, but I have always thought his female hands were in positions I was unable to achieve with my own hands.
I thought because these females were usually of wealth and means they, of course, would have the best nutrition available at that time and weren't subjected to manual labor so of course their hands would be lovely, long fingered and articulate hands able to look like ballet poses with out a problem, looking graceful and poised.

I also, noted the fifth left (pinkie) finger resembled a friends finger. My friend has osteogenisis imperfecta and had fractured her hand and arm as a young girl. The osteo doctor made a banjo-like splint to pull her fingers outward and allow them to heal in a normal functioning hand but her little finger healed into a point, similar to Leonardo's paintings. I told her her hand was graceful like his paintings. A little positive reinforcement maybe.

The first time I read Mr. Sweeney's theory I was defensive naturally toward de Vinci being such a genius and so adept in artist ability how could this man indicate his hands were not perfect. But it all makes sense; his obsession with hands, his obsession with anatomy, the different appearance of the hands. Now I understand why these hands were different. He made their appearance beautiful and wonderful. Just as he did everything he touched. Ahhh, what a mind.
