Into the Uncanny Valley

Joe Kloc explores the feeling of uneasiness that takes over when we encounter strikingly lifelike robots-- tracing the etymology of the word "uncanny" back to Ernst Jentsch's essay "On the Psychology of the Uncanny," published in 1906. Freud in 1919 and, then in the 1970s, roboticist Masahiro Mori expounded upon these concepts and most recently at Princeton's Neuroscience Institute last spring, Asif Ghazanfar conducted an experiment with macaque monkeys to study the uncanny.
