The public squabble between one of the nation's largest wholesale club operators and the world's largest soft drink maker is likely to fizzle quickly. But it reveals real tensions as retailers and product makers square off on prices
As shoppers continue to grapple with the recession, retailers want to win their favor by giving them low prices. But that has been creating tension between product makers like Coca-Cola Co., who are working hard to maintain profit margins while meeting retailer demands.
Typically such negotiations take place behind the scenes, but once in awhile, a public dispute erupts.
"Beneath this surface of harmony, it's a dogfight out there," Gerry Khermouch, editor of Beverage Business Insights, said Tuesday at an investor meeting held by the soft drink maker at its hometown of Atlanta.
Retailers want to wield more power in determining pricing with product makers, who they depend on to stock their customers' favorite brands, Khermouch said.
Costco has been aggressive in putting up signs on store shelves and notices on its Web site.
"Costco is committed to carrying name brand merchandise at the best possible prices. At this time, Coca-Cola has not provided Costco with competitive pricing so that we may pass along the value our members deserve," said a message on the company's Web site labeled "Price Alert!"
A Costco executive confirmed the move Monday but would not discuss the matter further.

Ugh, I'm happy to see one last place that sells that stuff. I work at a movie theatre and I die a little on the inside every time I have to sell one of our refillable larges to a individual who could clearly use the benifit of a nice cupe of green tea and a salad...

The scene some companies make. Coke really meant it with that tongue in cheeky Costco company. I'll be keeping my eye out for further fights. This is more fun than hodkey fights. Well Nancy & Tanya ice fights. The sad truth is I can't tell Pepsi & Coke apart. Don't spread it around current people. My fav is Cherry Coke which we can't even get in the backwoods I live in.

When I first read the title I literally thought for a second "you know most businesses have banned workers from using that in their drug tests for quite some time now, Costco... but it does explain a few things."

Good, cause we shouldn't be drinking that poison anyway!! Besides people can always drink Pepsi or whatever brand. I don't care who makes the Cola, as long as it's good cola. And there is plenty to choose from out there besides the Coca-Cola brand.
I pride myself in weaning myself from soda addiction to the point where I only drink one per month. This stuff isn't good for you, especially your teeth.
And ten years ago, but still far too late as far as I'm concerned. I discovered the joys of making juice with a juice extractor. Now when I drink something sweet, it's actually good for my teeth, cause fresh carrot juice is loaded with calcium. Your teeth are actually bones. Bones need calcium

Coke is great for cleaning battery posts on vehicles. That's what I use it for. Won't drink the crap, it leeches calcium from your teeth.

But you don't get cavities from drinking it. You get them from excessive drinking of it.

Eh, I like Coke--Pepsi's too sweet for me. And I like Costco's. But what a second guys, you're riled up about coca cola being the devil's drink but you don't discuss the limited options costco offer in terms of fresh produce or organic foods or ethically raised meats? The majority of their food is either frozen--full of sodium and preservatives or filled with sugar (HFCS) anyway.
To paraphrase the pres. of Coca cola from a CNBC documentary that was broadcasted a week ago "It's nice that you drink our product but don't drink our soda 20 times in one day."

Costco is a rip off anyway. I stopped going because my local supermarket was cheaper on some items but the capper was when Radio Shack had a better price on a exact same brand dvd player. When Radio Shack can beat your price, you have no business charging membership dues.

good, boycott killer coke, they poison the 3rd worlds lands, they make slaves of their employees and even have been convicted (colombia) of killing dissenting workers, they outsource water to poor countries by bottling both (tap)water and coke and charging more for water and besides all that sugary shit rots teeth, eats bones and causes diabetes and obesity. plus their plastic bottles pollute the worlds landfills and oceans and streets and schools and just about fucking everywhere.

you serious??? im not angry for more than a second in the span of a day if at all unless something terrible has happened. but to answer a less generalizing question such as whats it like being angry, i'd respond it's catalyzing. you should try it. and anger and violence don't have to go together so I see nothing wrong with trying to inform some people with facts that are quite disturbing. whats it like being an assuming instigator all the time? oh wait, that was generalizing and ignorant of me, I'm sorry.

Less readily accessible unfit beverages! A win all around. Does Coke care to comment on how exactly they require there high prices to make their bubbly brown corn syrup water? I doubt the pennies to produce it translate in a flattering light for them.
