parisinla
This weekends brutal murder of 19 year old gay man, Jorge Steven López Mercado in Cayey, Puerto Rico has had a break in the case.

According to Primera Hora, the Puerto Rican news magazine the local police have arrested 26 year old Juan A. Martínez as a suspect in the brutal killing. Martinez has confessed to the killing as well as being sexually advanced by Lopez Mercado after going to an apartment. Martinez confessed he was not aware that Lopez Mercado was a man, and that after that discovery, was angered and killed the victim.

The FBI is monitoring the investigation along with the Puerto Rican authority according to Henry Rodriguez, spokesperson for the bureau in Puerto Rico.

Allegations of homophobia in the state investigation against lead investigator Angel Rodriguez have been rebuffed by Jose Figueroa Sanchez, the supervising investigator in the department. However LGBT rights activists have complained that the attitude of the officer is incomprehensible as he has stated in a televised press conference that 'people who lead this type of lifestyle need to be aware that this will happen'. Pedro Julio Serrano, the Communications Manager for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is demanding that administrative charges be brought against Angel Rodriguez for his statements to the press. The NGLTF also asks for further investigation in to the actuality of this hate crime.

    • Right. Blame the guy just brutally dismembered and set on fire. Classy move, Puerto Rico police. I mean, clearly he deserved it for being gay and all. And we all know the guy who just got done butchering a human being alive can be taken at his word. It's not like he'd do something immoral and lie.

    • I think its pretty obvious these days when you are looking at a transgendered or transvestite. But these people should identify themselves for safety sake. I need to look into the details of this case.

I hope you're not implying that the alleged lack of disclosure of Jorge's gender makes his brutal dismembering 'understandable.' Jorge isn't the problem. It's the psychotic culture and lowlifes like Juan Martínez who can't deal with a misunderstanding and feel the need to go chop his head off, and that's if we believe his story. I'm sure he's an honest guy.

First of all thank you for correcting me about the correct term. It is not my intention to be offensive to anyone regarding this story. In fact I am shocked and offended at the savagery against the victim of the brutal murder.

I do not wish to imply that non-disclosure of gender was the cause of the violence, no one deserves to be murdered for being who they are. However, what I was getting at is this. If a person pretends to be the "real deal" and goes to a completely straight bar and seduces a man and engages in sexual activity, I think that for safety sake, the person should either be prepared to disclose, or not engage in such risky behavior; seducing an unsuspecting straight person. There is bound to be a reaction, but a savage murder is completely and unquestionably uncalled for.

If the person who committed this murder was in a known locale where transgendered and transvestite persons frequent, then the man cannot play dumb either.

I am not against being who you are and celebrating our diversity in our community, but where I come from, you buddy up with others; safety in numbers. You don't venture out alone and take your chances with the real world, they are savages out there. The community needs solidarity.
