Church of Scientology accused of torture and forced abortions

WakeUpPeople
Kevin Rudd, the Australian Prime Minister, has voiced “concerns” over the Church of Scientology after a senator detailed explosive allegations about the organisation, accusing it of torture, embezzlement and coerced abortions.

Nick Xenophon tabled letters to the Australian parliament from several former Scientologists, and alleged that the secretive church was an “abusive … violent and criminal organisation” which is hiding behind religion.

Mr Xenophon was questioning the church's tax-free status as a religion when he made the claims, which have been denied by the organisation.

The letters, which the senator has passed onto police, contained allegations of a range of crimes, including forced imprisonment, coerced abortions, embezzlement of church funds, physical violence, intimidation and blackmail.

“Scientology is not a religious organisation, it is a criminal organisation that hides behind its so-called religious beliefs,” Mr Xenophon told the Australian Senate in Canberra on Tuesday evening.

“... The letters received by me which were written by former followers in Australia contains extensive allegations of crimes and abuses that are truly shocking - crimes against them and crimes they say they were coerced into committing.

“These victims of Scientology claim it is an abusive, manipulative, violent and criminal organisation, and that criminality is condoned at the highest levels.”

Among the letters he tabled was one from a former follower from Western Australia, who was born into Scientology. The man wrote in a letter that as a member of the organisation in both Australia and the US he had participated in the “forced confinement and torture” of others. His letter also states: “Several abortions were ordered as well”.

    • All religions have the potential to be dangerous, regardless of how made up and blatantly stupid they are.

      good for you, Australia

    • The more outrageous your beliefs are the farther you have to go to defend them, the more outrageous your behavior becomes.

Many people just plain go overboard enthusiastic, like Billy Graham, Jimmy Swaggart, Hagee, especially that {ugh} Jerry Falwell i.e. everybody but me. Hmm, I wonder why frogs were used in Revelation 16:13? Could it have a connection with the color Green? Today "Green" is practically regarded as inspired, as in Green Energy. I wonder how John could have possibly viewed green as being evil ("inspired by demons") so much so it drags all the kings (governments) of the Earth into Armageddon?

Sometimes those Bible writers are just plain strange!!! The color green has always represented Life, right? Sometimes when reading the Bible maybe we should skip some verses.

Reading the Bible is beneficial, but actually "believing" it will make you very paranoid. The trick then is to read it and pick up its practical insights without letting it suck you in and put you under its spell.

    • The Bible writers and Jesus were anti-religion also. And John writing the Revelation said the Bride of Christ would lose her virginity and be rejected. That "Bride" was the Church. You guys! You're very biblical. You talk a good game but comes down to it you're almost baptized.

    • This particular article is about "The Church of Scientology" and not about Muslims. You're sure anxious to change the subject Dabne.

    • I live in Hollywood and would LOVE to witness the fall of scientology- beginning with the investigation of it all. The armed “security” that stands outside their compound and the incredible secrecy that is everything they do. I get sick walking buy those places here.

    • I love how Current and the media is quick to tear apart the "Church of Scientology," or the Mormons like on Prop 8, or the Catholic Church, but God forbid you question Muslims when they start mass killing innocent people including pregnant women in the name of Allah Akhbar! Fucking hypocrites, every last one of you.

that's pure 100% grade A bullshit! What planet do you live on? The muslim religion is just as false as all of the others and mass killing is always wrong no matter what the reason - including anyone who thinks they are doing what their god wants them to do! That kind of stupidity should always be condemned.

you find us a media outlet with the balls to print how twisted & corrupt Islam is and you better be damned sure i'd post it on here. but blaming current readers/commentors for the lack of said articles is really misplaced babe.

I have seen many more articles on here regarding Muslims than I have seen regarding Scientologists. Are your opinions based on fact? If so, why don't you take it upon yourself to find the stories and post them. The people at current do not (generally) produce new articles, they merely post the available sources here.

    • I think Scientology is my least favorite religion. It makes me the most depressed. You have a science FICTION writer inventing a religion about aliens from outer space and people actually believe it. Uh... hello? I started reading Dianetics out of curiosity, and it pretty much says that if you have mental issues it's because your mother tried to abort you with a wire hanger and you need a brainwashing... i mean psychological 'audit' session. Seriously!?!?

These people are just as dumb as the people who committed suicide in order to ride a comet to god. Heaven's gate, right?

      Depressing.

Humanpasta, it's this world that causes religions by not taxing them. Their "Power" would be broken like dry pasta if the money was pulled out from under their rugs and bed mattresses. Tired of religion's "hold" on ya? Tax em like ever'body else.

Otherwise everybody has no argument and should back down and be quiet, enjoy the show you already paid for the popcorn.

    • Perfect example of why society has been going downhill since man first offered entrails to the gods. Religion holds us all back from reaching our true potential as humans. This guy better watch his back because the scientology mafia will definately be sending hitmen his way.

    • perfect example of what humans do with a sectarian belief. this is our basic nature at it's worst.
these groups usually start up with wonderful valid teachings but slowly, if the members believe they are the special chosen, they see everyone else as fallen and a threat. iv'e seen this first hand not just with; spiritual, racial and national beliefs but with; pyramid scams and the wealthy.
our heritage is tribal, we need to identify with a group, there are no individuals ( mentally disfunctional excluded of course ). as long as our group doesn't exclude or hate others, it can be peaceful.

    • I can only hope that this gets the ball rolling. Countries around the world are finally standing up to Scientology and I can only hope that the US takes notice and acts accordingly.

Cult is a name used by other religions to defame other religions they don't like.

I agree with the statement that all religions are cults.

What I think is ironic is that if you type the word CULT in GOOGLE, about the 10th item in the list is the OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF SCIENTOLOGY. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

In the 1500s the Spaniards, in the name of the Church, used to draw-and-quarter Indians in the American Southwest, then pour molten lead into the bleeding stumps in order to show them the error of their godless ways.

      Religion- humankind's answer to grace.

    • Whew. We can all watch too, like in Germany. Watch one get singled out for the gas chambers. Hmm, they already took the babies so next they can take the old useless people. And fat people, get the fatties. Blind people, get rid of their genes too. Bipolar? Too bad.

But leave the women who had hysterectomies and ovarian cancer because they just leaned their pelvis up next to the kitchen dividers and got too much radiation from the divider's unshielded wiring. The metal sinks "pulled" the radiation beams toward them, not their fault.

They've already had their gas chamber.
