The poppy crop in Afghanistan, which produces 90 percent of the world's supply of opium, is linked to corruption, addiction and a drug trade that bankrolls the Taliban insurgency.
Curbing the cultivation of poppies is the goal of a U.S. program that has doled out $80 million (54 million euros) since 2007. That includes the $38.7 million (26 million euros) the U.S. announced it is giving to 27 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces that either reduced poppy cultivation by more than 10 percent or became poppy-free this year.

Funny that afghanistan did lower their poppy production under the taliban (if they really exist!) and when the wonderful US and UK armies arrived, the production shot up and now they account for 90% of the worlds supply.
and i'm sure the $80 million of taxpayers money to help heed production goes right out of our hands and back into the governments. - 2 years ago

It's a step in the right direction. We can't win a counterinsurgency war without winning the people, and that definitely will not happen if they're better supported under the insurgency than the occupiers.

That $38.7 million is going straight to poppy production, not reduction.
