Cop Driving 94 MPH kills 2 teens.

KSirys
AP reports "Police have released a videotape of a June police cruiser crash that killed two Connecticut teens. The officer was driving 94 miles per hour and was not on an emergency call. He's been charged with manslaughter"

An arrest affidavit says a Milford police officer charged with manslaughter for a car crash that killed two teenagers was driving 94 miles per hour and was not on an emergency call.
State police earlier this month charged Jason Anderson with two counts of second-degree manslaughter and one count of reckless driving. He was released on $250,000 bond. Anderson, who has been suspended with pay, is due to be arraigned Nov. 24.

Police said 19-year-old David Servin and 19-year-old Ashlie Krakowski were killed in the June 13 crash.
Police released a videotape of the crash Tuesday that shows the car carrying the teens turning into the path of Anderson's cruiser, which slams into the car and sends debris flying. The New Haven Register and Connecticut Post requested the video.
The video was taken by the dashboard camera of another Milford cruiser, the papers said. That cruiser was driven by Officer Richard Pisani, who has not been charged but is on desk duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
Pisani was traveling at 65 mph but accelerated when Anderson's cruiser passes him on the right, the Register said. Pisani's maximum speed in the time frame shown on the video is 72 mph, the newspaper said.
The New York Post said there has been speculation that the two officers may have been racing when the crash occurred.

    • One more bit: When you see the video, you see that the cop comes from behind on the right.

That means that the kids could not have seen him as his approaching car was hidden from their view by the car with the camera.

And again, everyone's vision is simply not very good at night. Therefore, it is entirely appropriate that cops obey the law just like everybody else - so they won't run into unsuspecting drivers - who are driving perfectly within safe parameters. Innocents.

    • When an object is coming towards you at 94 MPH it's hard to estimate when it will cross your path. One second it's several blocks away and in the next second it's right in front of you. It's reasonable too assume the teenage driver may have mentally noted that the cop car was in the foreground but underestimated how soon it would reach his car. This has happened too me. The cop was the primary cause for the accident and should be held accountable.

    • The cop should serve time and the police dept should send a nice fat check to the families of these kids. But, the video clearly shows that they took a risk turning in front of a car approaching at a high rate of speed. They thought they could make it bt they couldn't afterall. I do the same thing all the time but as this shows its a huge risk everytime. The roads looked pretty empty, so couldnt they have waited a couple of seconds for the oncoming traffic to pass? Maybe we should all go back to horse-n-buggy.

    • police Are people just like you and me the only difference is they have an undefineable power over Citizens. i strongly believe they should have a extensive personality test to make sure they dont pull this shit or turn on theyre sirens just to get through a red light as in the movie superbad ive seen this in my Small town Countless times. if a citezen kills a cop they get punished by the fullest extent of the law, so why should they be any different. susspension is out of the question, he made a decision to have fun on the job and that cost two kids there lives, he should be fired. Serve and Protect, thats the name of the game not street racing. and not all people/cops are 99% good its rediculous to claim such a thing. people in general are not 99% responsible, we make mistakes and this one resulted in legitimate manslauter. abuse of power discusts me, i understand if he feels bad or guilty of what hes done, as he should. but they need to set an example and re- think who they hire to protect our streets, and laws even the government isnt above the law

    • I just watched this again and again: the turning car was in the opposing traffic lane for a left turn for the camera car. Second the cars all had their headlights on but the turning car did not have their turn signal on, in the oncoming lane and clearly didn't yield to the oncoming traffic. Hey, it sucks to die but if they had paid attention they WOULD NOT HAVE TURNED INTO THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC, speeding or not.

You're hugging to an idea about holding to rules. 'If they followed the rules... '

People don't follow rules. -If you see a car with their turn-signs on, don't just pull out - maybe their signal hasn't gone off all day.

Rules are nice - but you have to allow for the real world.

It's kind of like, congressmen should always be truthful and do everything that is good. But government has graft - so you have allow that there is a more complex reality beyond a set simple abstractions.

Really nurse?? So they are supposed to know that the car that's coming from the opposite lane is coming at them at 94 miles an hour????

You're also saying that they are at fault for turning at the SPEED LIMIT and because they didn't have their signal, they are at fault... that's what you're saying right???

Cause if you are, than you're just that ignorant and other words I would call you, but to think two 19yr olds are going to identify a speeding car, going 94 MPH, when they are in a 55 MPH zone... specially when the car that's coming that fast is a COP RACING FOR NO F' ING REASON!!??. They should have known that all cars coming from that side of the road are coming that fast..... RIGHT!

Yeah, keep it up the great work nurse!!

I have always preached Safety First to all the kids I've ever come in contact with. You get behind the wheel of 'acouplea' tons of metal and drive 55-65 mph, you need to be completely alert and totally aware of all that surrounds you. You are responsible for yourself and your car(as well as your passengers). Defensive driving is always important. If you assume everyelse out there is not paying attention you will be on your toes and avoid accidents like pulling in front of a speeding idiot policeman and getting you and your friend killed.

For God's sake the cop car was barreling down the street at night without his lights on so fast you could miss it if you blinked. The cops driving was a terrible wreck waiting too happen and it did. He is an adult with a special responsibility because of his place in society and he smashed into a car, killing two people who were not yet adults. The young person made a common mistake in his driving. The cop was intentionally driving like a maniac. Why you insist on placing equal blame on the kids I don't understand but it appears to me from this and your past comments that you must be very strict minded and accept no excuses from others for being human.

wayseeker, I am in no way trying to eqate the disregarding, lawless speeding the cop did with the kid making a stupid driving mistake. The policeman was clearly in the wrong and should go to jail as well as lose his job.
I told my kids: safety FIRST. You never get to take back a mistake once it's done. And those two kids lost their lives. If the driver would have paid more attention to his/her driving they may have avoided being hit by the fly-by speeding cop. I lost a loved one in a head-on collison and he was not at fault, just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He had no chance to get away from or avoid being hit. Those kids did. And it can't be a do-over, they are dead.

Well nursediesel, I think we can agree on one thing for sure. If it wasn't for this being a police car that hit the teens, showing this video to new teen drivers would maybe teach them something about defensive and lawful driving. I told my son when he started too drive that it's wise to assume the other car is not going too stop at a red light or stop sign or stay in his lane. He later told me that he never forgot my statement about defensive driving and it helped him to be a safer driver. :)

That's easy. You don't see a vehicle approaching on your left at more than twice the speed limit. The 'C' pillar in your car is a very large blind spot, large enough to conceal a vehicle completely from view. If the vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed it can hide in your blind spot as you check the side view mirror and then appear in the blink of an eye directly beside you.
Everyone has experienced a close call least once with motorcyclists who drive way to fast in traffic.
Why do people always have the tendency to blame the victim, I wonder?

    • So last night on my way from Cocoa, Florida back to Orlando, Florida at 6:25PM I was passed by an Orange County Sheriff car on Toll Road 528 driving in excess of 100 miles per hour. I was driving 85 miles per hour when the Sheriff Deputies car raced passed me. I accelerated to 100 miles per hour to catch up so that I could get the plate and car number, however, the car continued to pull away.

There was another case a few month's back when I was passed by an Orlando Police Officer in the city of Winter Garden, Florida at 1:30AM. The speed limit was 45mph and the officer passed me doing at least 70. I was able to catch up to the car once the 4 lane road narrowed to 2 lanes and the car got caught behind a civilian car. Once on a straight away, the officer pulled out on double yellow lines and passed. I followed and he/she would not pass the next car, obviously for fear that he/she had been caught.

I got home and email the information email on the OPD website with no response. I have since lost the information or I would post it on here, but I know where the officer lives here in my town of Clermont (no I didn't follow the car, but I recognized he car number as the same car that sits in my friends neighborhood).

These are just 2 incidents out of many that I witness every week here in Central Florida. I am currently in the process of equipping my vehicle with a front and rear dash cam to catch these officers that feel they are above the law. I encourage everyone to do the same. We have to police the police or else more will continue to die.

I also encourage you to visit Barry Cooper's site nevergetbusted.com to learn more about the drug war and how illegal search's and seizure's are affecting the lives of million's. It is time we hold these agency's accountable.

      I'm disgusted by the shit.

You are supposed to stop at a flashing red light and look right and left then, right again, pulling out into oncoming traffic gets you killed. The driver can estimate the speed of the oncoming car and KNOW he's bookin' and to stay put; at least not pull into his path.
Yes, the cop was wrong but the two kids are dead. they could have stayed put at the light one more minute. Was she talking to him? were the kids tired? drunk? Defensive driving saves YOUR life, even with speeding ignorant cops!

    • Betico:

No - that's in the night. Are you saying, if they had a signal going, everything would have been fine? Of course not.
The fact is, that GLARE - and just plain human abilities to see and to differentiate at night, most of the time - simply do not allow for some approaching vehicle to be seen.

I am quite sure, those kids did not even see the cop until it was way too late. They probably noticed something to their right when they had become almost fully perpendicular.

If they had arrived two seconds earlier, with their signals on and stopping as you have suggested, they still would have pulled out because they simply could not have seen the speeding car coming.

That's why there are laws about going too fast - because people can't see in time.

That's reality. Rules allow people to not think. "If people followed the rules," etc, etc.
They don't. -Like the cop in this case. He didn't follow the rules.
But breaking the speeding "rule" or law wasn't the cause, as such. Rules, even when they work, are only a reflection about reality -
If he weren't speeding so fast that people could not see him, there would not have been an accident.
What, we should forget thinking, and conceiving and blindly follow "rules" (set by whom?) and then become the perfect little robots that might seem so nice?

This is how to become someone other than your true self. Your 'true self' here, is a thinking, feeling, aware person. Tactile, agile.
You see where I'm going with this?

    • Wow, that's terrible! Clearly the cop that crashed into those teens didn't have his lights on, so must not have been going on an emergency. Even still they're supposed to have their lights and sirens blaring!

If there wasn't that video that cop would've probably said that the other car was at fault.

Seems like the two cops were racing each other...why else would they be side by side like that?

    • No one's going to comment on the teenagers that pulled out in front of a speeding car? Regardless of the cop's dumbass move to go 100 mph without a siren on, you have to lay part of the blame on the driver who clearly didn't look to see if there was oncoming traffic before making a sharp left turn.

I say whenever we see cops speeding w/ out their emergency lights we raise a sh** storm during council meetings etc. Respectfully I mean. Try to catch it on video and show it during the meeting (we can during council meetings). Any who, do it respectfully and whatnot. Cops are necessary, but no reason they shouldn't answer to the people that pay their wages.

Both had a flashing red light and neither car came to a full stop. the speeding cop or the teens! Stay out of their way or this happens. If the kids would have stopped at the flashing light, the cop would have sped by them and they'd be here to tell about it.

nurse, when two cars are coming toward you at 70-90 miles an hour on a street that likely has a 45 or 55 mph limit, it is very easy to not see them entirely or to misjudge their speed. plainly and simply, red light run or not, this accident was CAUSED by the speeding cruiser. in fact, after watching the video again, it appears to me that the teens did stop at the flashing red, and very likely just misjudged the cruisers speed.

its like people not seeing motorcycles. visibility of them is very low and people do not specifically look for motorcycles. just as those teens may not have scanned far enough ahead to see the speeding cruisers.

if the officers had not been speeding, this accident absolutely would not have happened. the teens may even have misjudged the cruisers speed but thought they could make it ahead of the cruiser, or expected the car to stop at the flashing red.

Even if this guy WAS responding to a call, he shouldn't be going 94! EVER! It's sad to say that many, many police officers abuse their power on the road like this every single day, only this time it cost 2 young lives - how horrible...

This officer should be punished to the full extent of law with no mercy! There was absolutely no reason for that cop to be speeding and this should be considered murder.
