Beck's "brand new reality" on climate change relies on distorting apparently stolen emails

NASA scientist: Emails do not show that "global warming is a hoax"

NASA's Gavin Schmidt: Critics "are using language used in science and interpreting it in a completely different way." Wired's Threat Level blog reported on November 20 that Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said: "There's nothing in the e-mails that shows that global warming is a hoax. ... There's no funding by nefarious groups. There's no politics in any of these things; nobody from the [United Nations] telling people what to do. There's nothing hidden, no manipulation. It's just scientists talking about science, and they're talking relatively openly as people in private e-mails generally are freer with their thoughts than they would be in a public forum. The few quotes that are being pulled out [are out] of context. People are using language used in science and interpreting it in a completely different way." Schmidt is a contributor to the Real Climate blog, which has stated that some of the stolen CRU emails "involve people" at Real Climate.

    • Peer reviewed papers have lost their credibility in light of these latest revelations. The political and ideological agenda is at the highest level, driven by vested interests and the result is a contamination of scientific objectivity within the establishment. In addition, the peer reviewed papers in the journals that support AGW are based on faulty models and not on observation using the hypothetico-deductive approach. The issue here is the corruption of science in an age of rampant societal dishonesty.
There is a malaise amongst the 'believers'.....and that's all they are.....in AGW that consists of an unwillingness to allow a paradigm shift and admit to the scam and just start again. There is fear and denial. Fear of losing an identity......so many have invested themselves in this theory, intellectually, emotionally and yes spiritually. AGW is a new religion that has replaced the old faiths that have been jettisoned since the 60s in our post modern age. The irony is that this new secular age has spawned a new irrationalism rooted in insecurity and loss of self belief, and so many have taken refuge in fighting this mythical AGW, forging a new purpose for their lives. Giving up that illusion takes courage and integrity, and is not swayed by emotion but by truth.

The science behind AGW is very straightforward. Humans release 7Gtons of CO2 each year, 4 of which the biosphere sucks up. CO2 is only .04% of our atmosphere, so the 3GT net is significant. No respected scientist disagrees that CO2 is a greenhouse gas. So really the burden of proof is on the skeptics to show that all this extra carbon is NOT causing the earth to warm.

The problem is that there are a lot of people with a lot of money with a vested interest in the convenience and profitability of the status quo. Which is so many skeptics are pointing to obscure papers and using misleading or blatently false techniques to attempt to demonstrate that there is no concensus on this issue.

    • It is Professor Svensmark’s research that may prove the greatest challenge to the prevailing consensus on climate dynamics. The Danish scientist, author of The Chilling Stars, become noted because of his research into cosmic rays and their effect on cloud formation. His theories contradict the IPCC’s theory of anthropogenic global warming, which basically blames last century's rise in average global temperature on human CO2 emissions. Instead, Svensmark hypothesises that clouds created by cosmic rays, which are in part controlled by the activity of the sun, regulate the Earth's climate. Because this contradicts the IPCC's view of global warming, Svensmark's theory has been ignored by the climate alarmists and the scientist himself vilified.

New research now seems to be backing up Svensmark’s theory. Dr. Svensmark and his team undertook an elaborate laboratory experiment in a reaction chamber the size of a small room. The team duplicated the chemistry of the lower atmosphere by injecting the gases found there in the same proportions, and adding ultraviolet rays to mimic the actions of the sun.

Result: a huge number of floating microscopic droplets quickly filled the chamber. These were super-small clusters of sulphuric acid and water molecules – which are the building blocks for cloud condensation nuclei - that had been catalysed by the electrons released by cosmic rays.

The point? The research experimentally identified a causal mechanism by which cosmic rays can facilitate the production of clouds in Earth's atmosphere. This does not disprove the existence of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect. But it does challenge the “man-only” theory, and suggests that the IPCC should consider the effect of cosmic particles in examining climate dynamics. Or, at least, accept that there is a long way to go before we fully understand climate dynamics and who plays what role.

I suggest putting scientific claims on a "credibility spectrum" (admittedly not my idea). At the bottom are laypersons, next up are scientists with an agenda or scientists financially backed by organizations with an agenda. Not too credible.

Next up from that are professional individuals. Scientists who do experiments and make claims, but aren't published in the big peer-reviewed journals. It turns out that there are plenty of scientists to cherry pick from on both sides of the climate debate, so they cancel each other out. Svensmark is one such scientist.

Going higher, we get to peer-reviewed journals like Science and Nature. Articles only reach these magazines after a lot of scrutiny, so they are very reliable. Guess what: not a lot of articles that say human-caused global warming is a hoax in these mags!

At the very top are the heavy-hitting professional organizations like AAAS and NAS. They are made up of huge numbers of scientists, and neither will release a statement unless there is mass concensus. Both have released statements calling for drastic and immediate action to counter human-caused gobal climate change.

    • does anyone have access to these supposed emails?
Beck brings some strong statements out of these emails, but i would like to see for myself in what context they were used.
Beck's viewers should be asking the same thing, but we can assume they like what they hear, and that is as far as their brain capacity is willing to take them.

    • Okay people, human-caused global climate change is real, and the science behind it is actually pretty straightforward. All the scientists from the serious organizations (AAAS and NAS) and the heavy-hitting peer-reviewed journals agree that humans are causing the climate to change. That is as certain and reliable as science gets.

BUT DONT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT.

First, check out http://www.grist.org/article/series/skeptics/ for a series of articles that explains how science can be so certain that humans are causing the climate to change.

Then go to YouTube and search "How it all ends" for a really compelling video about what we should do. This guy is a science teacher working at home, so the production value is a little low, but he's really good at breaking stuff down. I also highly recommend his expansion pack videos, especially the ones on the science of climate change.

Now this latest data destruction issue is weird and a bit of a setback, but I gaurantee you that there is plenty of evidence for global warming and that any serious scientist still believes in it just as strongly.

    • GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL! It's just not caused by humans. It has been warming since the last ice age. To think that humans could actually effect the global temperatures is the dumbest part of Al Gore's billion dollar industry. The #1 reason for change in "greenhouse gases" is volcanic activity. No matter how much money Al Gore makes, we're not able to stop the volcanoes in order to keep the temperatures where we like them.

    • Well it worked with ACORN. Now, by yet another illegal act, the right wingers get excitedly up in arms over yet another "gotcha" moment completely devoid of context. Only an extremist POV would conclude that a few bad apples at ACORN means the entire organization is corrupt. The same POV claims that if a few scientists' emails suggest that global warming is a hoax, the entire scientific community should be rejected. It is irrational thinking and it is a sign of desperation to have one's personal opinions validated. You can have your opinions that anthropogenic climate change is a hoax, but don't suggest that these snippets from a few emails represent definitive proof that you are correct. I hope that logic rules the debates in the future instead of wild assumptions, silly pictures of the koolaid man, and irrelevant talk of masturbation.

I honestly haven't heard about Palin's hacked email. If it was obtained illegally, I hope the hacker was punished.

You're right about the koolaid comment. I shouldn't have written it. I just said it because I feel strongly about this topic and I want substantive comments.

It just seems odd to me that hundreds of thousands of scientists across the plant would have managed to keep this information under wraps for so long. Why is it breaking now that we are close to Copenhagen and climate legislation? Just seems too convenient. This wouldn't be the first time a PR group pulled a stunt to change legislation.

I'll be honest, I haven't read all of the emails in question. I've read a few rebuttal articles where they claim that these emails do not prove that there is any hoax. I wasn't actively seeking articles from this perspective, but I just happened upon them. I will look for articles with differing opinions and read more of the emails in question tomorrow.

I want to be fair on this, so I'll report back what I find.

    • Climate Change exists it is a NATURAL phenomenon driven mainly by Sun spot activities. There is not ONE scientific paper which PROVES that the MINISCULE amounts of CO2 in the air emitted by MAN have any noticeable effect on climate whatsoever. The earth has been COOLING for the past 12 years while man's CO2 emissions have continued to RISE. The NATURAL state of the planet over thousands of years is FAR warmer than it is now. CO2 rises ALWAYS follow Global Warming they NEVER precede it ask a GEOLOGIST not a CLIMATOLOGIST who cant even tell you if it will rain tomorrow. CO2 is not a pollutant... it is a VITAL part of the cycle of life... it feeds plants plants feeds humans and animals..... MORE CO2 more plants more food better for life, LESS CO2 less plants man and animals starve. So apart from being TOTALLY wrong about AGW, Green NAZI's are also anti LIFE.

The core issue here is totalitarianism.

The whole Kyoto approach to Global warming is unravelling in time for Copenhagen. It is now obvious how much climate alarmists have exaggerated the man-made effects of global warming. In so doing they have trampled on human rights, democracy, and even prosperity itself. Growing numbers of scientists now affirm that human activity has but a very limited impact on the world's climate. Human activity accounts for barely 4% of total CO2 emissions, natural processes and volcanoes account for all the rest. The greenhouse
effect of water vapour is even 900 times larger than carbon dioxide. And it is because human reduction is so difficult, and the human proportion of CO2 in the greenhouse effect so low, that a universal climate plan can produce only minimal effects
at such a very high cost. A cost
that can only be explained as a new idolatry. A Golden Calf to be sacrificed on the alter of the 21st Century.

You're ignoring the rest of the story.

Plants breathe CO2 and put out O. We breathe O and put out CO2. That is the natural balance.

We clear cut 500,000+ hectares of forest every year. Human populations are exploding in the most polluting countries. We're destroying the things that put out O and use machines that produce trillions of tons of excessive CO2 without restoring the producers of O. The environment is out of balance.

The totalitarianism will come regardless of your right or the left views. The US government has gone from public servant to corporate interest and can never again be trusted until all taking of bribes (lobbying) is banned. The same goes for these pundits. They get paid seven digits to spew whatever it takes to deflect attention from their sponsor's malicious intentions while fanatics blindly hang on their every word.

    • Well, I think we have gotten to the bottom of this story now.

I googled "Govt-Funded Research Unit Destroyed Original Climate Data" and found the reference to the CRU destroying their raw data.
Now the hacking makes sense. This had to be an inside job. Someone who witnessed these guys manufacturing then destroying data turned them in.
I never thought I would say this, but this hacker is my hero. He deserves the Nobel prize for saving the World.

Check this story dated October 5, 2009

Govt-Funded Research Unit Destroyed Original Climate Data
CEI Petitions EPA to Reopen Global Warming Rulemaking

Washington, D.C., October 6, 2009―In the wake of a revelation by a key research institution that it destroyed its original climate data, the Competitive Enterprise Institute petitioned EPA to reopen a major global warming proceeding.

In mid-August the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (CRU) disclosed that it had destroyed the raw data for its global surface temperature data set because of an alleged lack of storage space. The CRU data have been the basis for several of the major international studies that claim we face a global warming crisis. CRU’s destruction of data, however, severely undercuts the credibility of those studies.

In a declaration filed with CEI’s petition, Cato Institute scholar and climate scientist Patrick Michaels calls CRU’s revelation “a totally new element” that “violates basic scientific principles, and “throws even more doubt” on the claims of global warming alarmists.

CEI’s petition, filed late Monday with EPA, argues that CRU’s disclosure casts a new cloud of doubt on the science behind EPA’s proposal to regulate carbon dioxide. EPA stopped accepting public comments in late June but has not yet issued its final decision. As CEI’s petition argues, court rulings make it clear that agencies must consider new facts when those facts change the underlying issues.

CEI general counsel Sam Kazman stated, “EPA is resting its case on international studies that in turn relied on CRU data. But CRU’s suspicious destruction of its original data, disclosed at this late date, makes that information totally unreliable. If EPA doesn’t reexamine the implications of this, it’s stumbling blindly into the most important regulatory issue we face.”

Among CRU’s funders are the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy – U.S. taxpayers.
