Our court system is totally screwed up. It's all about profits, prisoners make profits, tickets generate profits, misdemeanors generate profits and so do taxes and registrations.

    • Release the Wal-Mart surveillance video, end of story. People don't get sentenced with 15 years for running from the cops in a car chase..... Many, many convicted rapists serve much less than 15 years. I guess it's just another reason to not shop at Wal-mart.

    • No, rickm8, you must be the absolute idiot because you backseat drive the story while calling me an idiot without ever explaining what I was wrong about. As a matter of fact, after belching out a random 'dis, you go on to describe the video like an airport lounge emcee without taking us anywhere. I understand completely the story. I even think she probably had a case of the head bobbing attitude...However, these things tend to get blown out of proportion by the police, city attorney and courts because every disturbance is a paycheck to these people. Considering they like to build big buildings complete with the best hardwoods and marble floors and walls to do their work in, incidences like this help them pay the bills. Kicking at a cop or attempted assault on a cop can also be called slipping and one leg heading the officer's direction or attempting to block a hit to the face by a police officer by using your arm. This all depends on who is telling the story. Most of the time, if caught on camera, the 'criminal' wins the truthfulness argument. Seriously, I support good cops, just don't meet many. When cops are as bad as the criminals, which is common in most cities, I tend to pity the criminals more. The criminals commonly have issues they are dealing with or have been dealt a bad hand all of their life. Yes, some make bad decisions but with little education what do you expect. However, cops have it made. Fun job, demand respect, good benefits, chicks dig the uniform, extra benefits like free car when off work and gas paid for, free items at restaurants and gas stations and some even get free rent. Then, greed takes over and the power corrupts and voila, you have a criminal with a badge. This is much worse than stealing to feed your family, don't you think?

Give me two weeks to investigate any cop you think is clean and 75% of the time, I can prove you wrong.

I agree, I hate cops and think the abuse the power, opinions on this case seem pretty clear cut though brother. I can introduce you to a few that are perfectly clean in my town! But for the most part they are corrupt power whores, we see eye to eye there. You misrepresented the story by saying she is facing 15 years for 'cutting in line at wal-mart'

    • Good thing is she only got a year of probation. The 15 year title is slightly misleading since it was not what the prosecutoin said they were going after, it is simply a general figure given to anybody charged with the type of crime.

    • This case has been settled with a plea agreement last week - she plead guilty to resisting arrest and disturbing the peace and received a sentence of one year unsupervised probation, court costs, anger management classes and 4 days in jail. The plea deal includes that her record will be expunged if she completes the probation. Very light sentence since reports say the video shows her kicking at a cop in the parking lot. If it were me, I would've got the 15 years for slipping and accidentally touching a cop.

What it came down to was the video which showed her pushing another costumer's items out of the way to make room for hers and it appeared she kicked at a cop at the car.

    • Kaia:

Thanks Kaia. Thanks for the information that concludes this thread and the rethoric about how unfair our system of justice is. Now we can comment on racism. Even after she pleated guilty she is looking for blood. This "Alternet" is the biggest issue I see. Also Current for giving incomplete info.

    • Yeah, no, your an idiot monkey_films, you must know nothing about the situation. She isn't getting 15 years in prison fro cutting in line. She is facing charges that may result in up to 15 years in prison. These charges include assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, etc etc. Those are serious charges, and she should face serious time. In fact, on one site I saw them saying the KKK did it! That the KKK was involved! This thing is blown out of proportion. She hit officers, and broke the law. Send her to prison!

    • On 31 January 2001, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, a Libyan, was convicted of involvement in the bombing and sentenced to life imprisonment in Scotland. On 20 August 2009, the Scottish Government released him

in this day and age cutting back in line gets you 15 years?

did you read the article?did you read any other articles pertaining to the case?
this woman commited a crime, which she will probably not serve one day for and is trying to stir up controversy by playing the race card.

She has not been sentanced. She's not been tried neither. In this country you get a hearing first unlike many countries in this world. You have to wait like the rest of us to see what the evidence on both sides are and the verdict. In the mean time, sit on your hands like I am.

    • The title of this article is misleading as is the article itself, since it paints a wholly one sided picture of the events that took place. There were plenty of witnesses and a security tape that clearly shows these events unfolding as desribes by law enforcement. They gloss over facts by stating "The cops were called. And she is facing a possible 15-year sentence in prison"; they skipped the part where commited a felony. The sentence of 15 years is the maximum and is usually reserved for those that have a history of commiting crimes. Since she is a teacher it is likely that she does not have a record and will get a suspened sentence, probation and community service. This is not about race, as this article implying, it's about respect for others and a willingness to follow simple rules. None of this would have happened if she had not cut in line, cussed out the other patrons and cashier, refused to leave when asked and resisted arrest. Now she is facing a blemish on her record and the possible loss of her career all because she couldn't wait an additional 5 minutes to pay for whatever cheap crap she was buying at walmart.

Time to bone up and show their cards (no pun intented - read the artcle). Where are the witnesses?
