Supporters say hemp could help economy
source: http://www.upnorthlive.com/news/video.aspx?id=382337
Everett Swift went before the Montmorency County Board of Commissioners Wednesday morning urging them to pass a resolution that would open up opportunities for farmers to cultivate industrial hemp.
"It's got over 25,000 different uses," Swift said. "Textiles, biofuels, they're making biodegradable plastics, concrete, building materials."
Currently it's legal to sell hemp products, however it's illegal to cultivate, or grow, hemp without a permit from the federal government. While hemp and marijuana both belong in the cannabis plant family, supporters of the pro-industrial hemp resolution say they are very different.
"The difference, it's like a male and female plant," said Jolene Fowler, a local hemp jewelry business owner. "Hemp doesn't flower, it doesn't have any narcotic effects."
During Wednesday's highly attended county commission meeting, supporters took turns expressing their views on the topic. In the end the Montmorency County Commission declined to take any action on the topic. It's not clear if or when they'll revisit the issue.

Criminals steal, not policemen.
Somebody is watching too much "Dukes of Hazard".
Classical subversion of values: bad is good, good is bad.
Not to mention the usual conspiracy theory.

Hemp was banned for the benefit of loggers and DuPont nylon. Make no mistake about it. Also to replace the prohibition enforcement police work, which has always been a cops license to steal. They wanted the scam, pure and simple. They were spoiled by alcohol prohibition.

Like people will not abuse it somehow.
Grow up, those who seriously believe that the opposing the production of hemp is done by ignorant people, or people unaware of what that is.
Cannabis my friends, is cannabis.
Use something else to the production of fibers.
Using hemp will open a huge margin for drug dealers to claim legality while feeding the kids with dope.
Amazing that some people in here might know numbers, but seem uncapable of adding them to see the results.
Think a little further, that's all.

You truly don't know their are different varieties of cannabis?
We have one variety that grows all over in every yard and field in Mihigan known as Michigan Hemp.Everyone is aware it is not marijuana and can not be smoked even though the leaves look like a marijuana leaf.
The cops are even smart enough to know the difference but it looks like you are not.
Ever been to Canada and seen the miles of Industrial hemp growing in the fields there?Wake up, get an education, and find out what the hell you are talking about.
YOU CAN NOT GET HIGH FROM INDUSTRIAL HEMP!
I would love to roll some up for you and watch you smoke it so you could find out how sick you get from it.
One thing for sure anyone who tries smoking industrial hemp never tries it again because of the head ache it causes.
I dare you to try it and see what happens.

Where do these people come from? It's like they're from Mars or something. They oppose a worthy cash crop for our farmers, because they disagree with Marijuana. Are you in there guys? Did you not read the posts? Do you not believe?
Believe. A farmer in Iowa is growing hemp to make jeans. The boy is NOT a drug distributor. Was that clear enough? You smoke that shit and all you get is a sore throat and a headache. Do your research. If you DON'T want to do your research, then shut your mouth. You don't know what you're talking about. If I want to consult an idiot, I'll go downtown and talk to a bumb. Geeeeesss...... are you in there?

could? will!
forget everything about marijuana quite simply opening a new industry increases competition driving prices down while simultainiously creates new jobs that previously did not exist.btw all your apocolyptic views of a society on pot are quite comical. amsterdam heard of it.they have no problems of people sleeping in thier own pee(alcoholics here do by the way )children in amsterdam arent playing in garbage. gangs can only fight for control of markets that are illegal, legalization and regulation take away the gangs abilities to run markets as they wish , have ya noticed folgers employees arent kiling maxwell house epmloyees despite caffine being an addictive drug.watch out for that phizer street militia they sooo dangerous.

You can NOT get high off hemp. It will grow just about anywhere. At this point we need to stop looking at the money aspect. Recession or no recession, it's time to stop making petroleum based plastics, using forest timbers for building materials so on so fourth. If hemp can replace it, why not? What's the issue?

I would recommend everyone take the time to educate yourself,
Industrial Hemp is NOT Marijuana.
Ignorance and lack of education on this issue is the reason we are the largest importer in the world of Hemp Fiber to build everything from cars to Bibles.Take some time and learn what you are talking about before post about a subject you know nothing about.

To whom are you referring? me? If so that is the very point I am making. Hemp is just another crop. conflating the growing climate and profitability of illegal marijuana and legal hemp is just dumb.
Industrial hemp is a junk crop. It's grown in areas that won't support more profitable agriculture. The idea that it can 'save' the farm economy in an area with high priced land is just willfully ignorant.

So just because you see it as a junk crop you think American farmers should not be allowed to grow it?
Manitoba Harvest who makes hemp foods just announced they had a 500% growth in sales.Would you rather we just continue to import it from other countries like China, Japan, and the 30 other country who grow it?
I can grow it on my land and make a profit on it selling it to one of the thousands on American Manufacturers that use it every day and import it now.
I did the research and can get the contracts if I were only allowed to grow it.My farm is one of many in my area that could be saved using this crop.
But I guess it is "just dumb" for me to want at least try and save my farm because the other crops are killing my soil because of the pesticides and lack of nutrients being drained by them.Industrial hemp returns nutrients to the soil and I don't have to use pestisides with it.
It would make my other crops grow better as a rotational crop resulting in better crops and more profit.
Do you think that is Dumb?

Well, Intel is already thinking about implanting commercial chips on people's brains, why not kill it completely?
No reaction, people will just sit on the same spot the whole day and will do anything for a new dosis.
(I have seen Christiania on its glory days and it was something like this, people sleeping over their own pee, children playing over garbage, oldies dying of frost on winter, gangs fighting for control of the hash/pot market... ...if hell has a name...)
it doesn't work.

Northern Michigan: Another lousy place to grow hemp. (see British Columbia for the same argument) What we have here is yet another cold wet place with expensive farm land.
If hemp is legalized it is not going to sell for hundreds of dollars an ounce it's going to sell for pennies a bushel just like cotton or corn or any other dryable high yield non perishable crop. That's the way farm economics works. It will likely be most economic to grow hemp in hot dry areas on garbage soil because it grows well there and the land is cheaper.
Of course supporters are saying that. The supporters are so desperate they will say just about anything. Find a desperate area where they can score some votes, tell a bunch of whoppers. What else is new?

I'm not sure that made sense. Misreply? If you are saying that there is not land of that type in the northern hemisphere, not necessarily. There is hot weather garbage farmland in places like Arizona and Texas. mexico is still northern hemsiphere, and of corse there is always Afghanistan. They've even already got the infrastructure. :p

I agree, the half that produce it will make enough money to make them happy, and the other half will be so happy they won't notice they are poor...now a good selling point would be to offer free munchies with the purchase. Everyone would be happy.

right you are Terri... after all why should 1/2 of our farmers be allowed to make a profit? Better we import the shit from China- which is what we're doing now. Worried about the munches are you? Well, hell, just take them off the market. What's holding you back? Reality? Truth? or superstition? You know guy, there's a bunch of rocks in England that are really old and our present conclusion about them is that they had some significance. Maybe you should look into them. Makes as much sense as your statements.
