ibrake4rappers13
Eight years after the Patriot Act became law in the United States, President Obama has told lawmakers that he wants to reauthorize three parts of the act that were set to expire later this year.

    • here are the specific provisions set to be extended according to http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/09/obama-backs-expiring-patriot-act-spy-pr...

*A secret court, known as the FISA court, may grant “roving wiretaps” without the government identifying the target. Generally, the authorities must assert that the target is an agent of a foreign power and/or a suspected terrorist. The government said Tuesday that 22 such warrants — which allow the monitoring of any communication device — have been granted annually.

*The FISA court may grant warrants for “business records,” from banking to library to medical records. Generally, the government must assert that the records are relevant to foreign intelligence gathering and/or a terrorism investigation. The government said Tuesday that 220 of these warrants had been granted between 2004 and 2007. It said 2004 was the first year those powers were used.

*A so-called “lone wolf” provision, enacted in 2004, allows FISA court warrants for the electronic monitoring of an individual even without showing that the person is an agent of a foreign power or a suspected terrorist. The government said Tuesday it has never invoked that provision, but said it wants to keep the authority to do so.

Basically, these things wont apply to you.. unless, you know.. you are involved in some kind of international sketchy activity. Obviously, on the surface this extension of these measures of the Patriot Act sound like huge trespasses against everyone's civil liberties but if you'll see, the first two provisions can only be used if the government can assert that the person in question is an agent of a foreign power (aka not the average citizen) and the "lone wolf" provision, which is more broad, has never even been used! All they are doing is keeping their options open so they can try to keep us safe. Obviously, if the government has reason to believe that someone is plotting something, they should be allowed to investigate it. I'm sorry but the government is really not interested in your facebook chats, gmail messages to your boyfriend or internet shopping history.

Coffee, my God do you have to ask that? Of COURSE we can do something about it. But only as a people, NOT as individuals. Want to affect change? Write your congressman - or woman. Matters not. They get enough mails they think their constituents oppose one thing or another they act on it. Our representatives DO have their own mind, but they're there at our convenience. If they think enough folks oppose something they'll normally go with it. Don't talk - ACT.

    • I'm just laughing my ass off that a right wing nut has used a Russian news clip to promote the propaganda that President Obama's agenda is no different from Bush's. The hypocrisy is occuring on so many levels it is hilarious.

You should take those Obama goggles off sweetheart. Not only does Obama want to reauthorize parts of the patriot act, he's building another GITMO in Afghanistan to house all those "category five" indefinite detainees. In that respect there is no difference between Obama and Bush.

    • You want change? Call congress, voice your feelings, remind them that they took an oath to uphold the constitution. If 10 million people / voters call, the government will start to take us seriously. We must get informed and involved.

    • Obama is just showing how weak he is by letting these puppeteers in suits come up with his so called "Change" slogan and now they're telling him how to exercise his presidency by telling him what to do! I hope this act is not one of the many steps towards ultimately destroying our constitution.
