One of the main problems with our society is we want to be sensitive to everyone. There is a difference between being sensitive and condoning things like this. Its not okay to weigh 300 pounds because you aren't supposed to. Besides, I find it digusting that Americans are overweight because they are overeating and there are people in other countries that are literally starving to death.

Let me clarify some things:
I'm not making fun of him. Either you are overweight because you have a medical condition or you are overweight because you eat too much. I really don't know how else someone's body is going to retain more calories than it expends. Its really simple as that. Maybe you thought I was rude because I used the word 'disgusting.' And I the 'disgusting' was referring to the extreme contradiction of people dying from no food to people dying of too much. I did not mean to say that people that are obese are disgusting, because I that is not what I think. Maybe 'disturbing' would have been a better word. But there are stark contrasts and that was the point I was trying to make. I do think people need to control themselves and know that its not ok. Im not making fun of peoples problems. I think people should know there is something wrong with being overweight. Most of my position comes from the fact I am a medical professional and medically, being overweight causes a lot of medical problems. As a medical professional, its not ok to look like that guy in the picture and I think people should know that. And clearly, I have a bit of self-control. Anyone can curse up a storm but it doesn't make your point/post more effective.

What amazes me about this is the amount of comments on this post. There are serious issues that no one bothers to even think about, but given the opportunity to be relentlessly cruel there is no shortage of opinion.

they should be required to buy two seats, it is not the Airline companies faults that they are too unhealthy to be of the right size to fit and there are other modes of transportation which they can take.
Now if it is due to a medical condition and one can prove this they should be accommodated and not charged extra. The fact is, most obese people do not have health problems, merely a different metabolism. This is something that, while it is shitty for them, can easily be dealt with by eating what is healthy for oneself, and not for others.

If you talk to most fat people, they are in total denial of this. Also, a big part of the problem is the food culture-- fast foods, processed foods, preservatives, additives, yada yada, are not good for anyone, and shouldn't be consumed at all. When I stopped eating that junk, I lost a ton of weight, but I also started exercising regularly. For some reason many able bodied people don't want to exercise.

Shame on all of you "shit talkers" making fun of this man. You have no basis to judge someone if you haven't walked a mile in their shoes.
Why is it still OK to DISS fat people? Many people in this country still DISS gays because they "have a choice" just like fat people "have a choice". I guess its because your either putting huge amounts of food or huge amounts of penis or vagina (as the case may be, GLBT) in your mouth by CHOICE. And the idea of that to many is GROSS.
Do people even listen to their comment, how it sounds?
I understand the sentiment that "we in America are being too sensitive, we have to accommodate people because of their health status, their marital status, their sexual orientation, their gender identification, and now you want us to be sensitive to fat people too?" I get that you are frustrated.
But some of the comments I have read reminds me of hyenas going in for the kill.

jubal, Here are the reason's people think it's ok to disparage fat people. And I'm not making this up:
1. To most people they look incredibly grotesque.
2. Many think obese people are that way because of sheer gluttony and nothing else
3. They are one of the segments of the population that place a tremendous strain on our health care system.Just look at the expression on the face of the guy sitting next to him. You don't even have to be psychic to know what he's thinking. They are not good thoughts about the whale sitting next to him.
I mean my god! He's so big he can't even fasten his seat belt! And he's blocking the isle. --two safety rules that the airline is violating actually.
He should have been charged for two seats. I've seen this before and it accommodates people of this man's size just fine.

Walk in their shoes? OK. Fine. I've been the chubby kid that everyone picked on. I've been that fat kid nobody wants to play with. The same shit happened to my housemate, who actually did something about his obesity. We're both relatively fit compared to the rest of the country now, but we've been in the fat person's shoes before... and it's not a very nice pair to be in. Hell, it was a bitch biking to school today after Thanksgiving break... stupid muscle lethargy.
Honestly, this guy needs to do something about his weight. It is a safety hazard that he's sticking out in the aisle. We can diss on obese people because... well... them being obese will kill them eventually, unlike your example of homosexuals.

Maybe more people should sit idly by because no one is perfect and I am sure that everyone of us has something "wrong" with us that someone else finds unacceptable. No one is in a position to judge anyone's lifestyle.
The airline should have made him purchase two seats because he is physically too big to fit in one and he is obviously blocking the aisle. That should be their policy. If it is not their policy, they should accommodate him as best they can under the circumstances because they were not competent enough to have a policy. End of story.

I don't think the assumption can be made that this man is lazy or does not consider the way he affects other people's comfort. The reality is obesity exists for multiple reasons, some of them medical, and the lack of accomodations for obese people is an issue at many venues. What would it hurt an airline company or stadium to make two seats for obese consumers?
For some people, their weight is an uncontrollable health issue. Even if they are being proactive in losing weight, they should have the option of riding a plane. I know obese people who do not eat a lot, and I believe their weight is a genetic disorder they have to do a lot to fight. The comments on this site lack any compassion. - 2 years ago

Of course this man should have to buy two seats, without a doubt. I do have serious doubts about this picture, though, and don't believe any airline would let anyone sit on the armrest for the flight. It is clearly a safety hazard both for him AND the rest of the passengers, and anyone can see it would easily open the airline up for numerous and various lawsuits. I do not believe this picture, but whether or not the picture is a fake, the problem of what to do about overweight passengers is real.
From some of the bashing I've read on this thread, I guess it's true what they say--- that fat people are the only thing left that it's OK to bash. I'm appalled at some of these comments. Shame on you!

What a shame--not only for this guy's level of self-esteem, but also for the people around him who have to accommodate for the fact that he's failed to take responsibility for his own health.
As citizens of a country where obesity-related illnesses are a leading preventable cause of death (2nd only to smoking but quickly overtaking it), it makes the most sense in the long run to reform health care starting with the root of the problem--our selfish collective mindset. Increasing awareness on the strong correlation between physical and mental health should be a major priority of government, not commoditizing the roles of extremely well-educated medical professionals through "universal health care."
It also wouldn't hurt if the we treated processed-food manufacturers more like tobacco companies. Our addiction to exaggerated flavors, value, and convenience over nutrition is gradually killing people one french fry at a time. Yet, we regularly allow lobbyists to push the people's interests aside by electing and re-electing corrupt "career politicians" who are clearly only focused on their own personal agendas.
Targeted marketing conditions us as Americans to think that we are entitled to whatever we want, whenever we want it. It's the "me, me, me" mentality that is destroying American "democracy" from the inside out. Sadly, this attitude is happening at every level of income, from the very poor to the extremely wealthy. Change must come from within.

This is clearly a safety issue, I have a few degrees in aeronautics and aviation safety and I am telling you this man is a safety concern. If there was an emergency there would be no way someone like that would be able react to it, and worse yet could jeopardize the safety of other people on board. I mean due you really think this man could exit on a over wing exit, or safely slide down a escape slide…..their design to take the load of the heaviest of “calorically challenge” persons……but come on! Comfort issues aside, I am surprised the airline would allow him to fly. I am all for equal rights, and giving someone their dignity, but when it comes to other people safety, there is a point where you have to be blunt.

The problem is that we are becoming too sensitive to apply reason. Race, sexual orientation, sex, disability, and national origin are not choices, being a fat slob often is.
If it is due to a medical condition, there should be a special accommodation made, otherwise suffer the humiliation and wallet draining penalties that situations like this will incur with full awareness that it is your doing that put you in said situation.
This society needs to stop making accommodations for every situation that a human-being puts himself in, otherwise everyone suffers.

well, at least one airline has the two-seat rule. article dated 05-15-09:
"Under the rules outlined by United, passengers who "are unable to fit into a single seat in the ticketed cabin; are unable to properly buckle the seatbelt using a single seatbelt extender; and/or are unable to put the seat's armrests down when seated" will be denied boarding unless they purchase an extra seat."

Honestly where would some one that....large, be needing to go? Not very many places I can tell you. And also why would they go in public in the first place? Are they not self aware enough to be embarressed or ashamed of their weight/looks? I know I would be...
Side Note: They don't let people buy two plane tickets for one person.

I simply can not believe you have said this. I'm apalled. How dare you make a comment such as this about other human beings? Thank goodness you have no say in the lives of those who don't look like you think they should.

This sounds like either a) you, yourself, have a problem with obesity and this is how you have perceived your own life or b) you are just out to make really ridiculous comments due to other self-image problems you have.
So obese people should be trapped in their homes and not be permitted to fly? (And I wonder if you think they should be allowed to ride in a bus or in a car?)
What exactly would lead you to think there are not "very many places" this man should go? Is he breaking laws by flying? Should he be quarantined by the CDC for obesity and never allowed to go out into society? What the hell? You mentioned "ashamed", you should be ashamed for making such comments. Narrow-mindedness and intolerance won't get you very far.

Luciano Pavarotti (I'm sure I didn't spell his name right, sorry) went quite a few places.

That is an obvious danger if people had to escape from the plane quickly. By blocking the aisle he also gets in the way of the stewards.
I say either make a few rows with oversize seats, or charge them for two. It is never pleasant to sit next to someone who is taking up some of the seat you paid for. - 2 years ago
