The maker of Samuel Adams beer has released an updated version of its biennial beer Utopias — now the highest alcohol content beer on the market. At 27 percent alcohol by volume and $150 a bottle, the limited release of the brandy-colored Utopias comes as more brewers take advantage of improvements in science to boost potency and enhance taste.
"Just part of trying to push the envelope," said Jim Koch, founder and owner of the Boston Beer Co. the maker of Sam Adams. "I'm pushing it beyond what the laws of these 13 states ever contemplated when they passed those laws decades ago."

aren't most of those states so called red states. you know, the free market worshipping people? why then do they feel the need to regulate the market by restricting the alcohol content of beer? it's a fault in their free market worshiping logic. which is all BS to begin with. everybody with a brain knows that. But I just enjoy poking more holes in it.

It's not so much about restricting the alcohol content of beer as restricting access to high alcohol drinks. States usually have different laws for beer and for everything else. In NH, beer and wine can be sold in any convenience store, but you have to go to the liquor store for anything else. These laws exist so I can't just label my vodka as "beer" and sell it at 7-11. I suspect that liquor stores in NH will be able to sell this stuff.

Excellent question. NH is just as free as the rest of the country but if you repeat something many times you may believe it.

I am from NH and believe me, the state motto is a joke. "Free" is meant in the Republican sense. It refers only to income taxes, which are nil. The state has very authoritarian laws. Pot laws, alcohol laws and traffic laws are particularly harsh.

And no way that I am paying $150 for a bottle of beer. Nice try. I think the "banning" is a marketing tactic.

"Thirteen states prohibit its sale because its alcohol content exceeds the legal limit for beer: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Washington".----they must still label it "beer", call it something else,....they could sell it. But hey,....this is "Sam Adams",...the beer guys. The whole POINT is that it is "beer".

@bansheewail, not all of us are "heavily armed, drunk ass rednecks." Some of are heavily armed, drunk ass intellectuals.
And those laws exist because of religion. Hell, you can't even buy alcohol on Sundays here in Georgia let alone a high gravity beer. You can't buy beer cold in Mississippi because of a law that is intended to keep people from drinking the beer while they drive home. Banned because of the law that was created by religious christians to keep us heathens from enjoying the devil's juice.

the technical term for beers over the limit is "malt liquor". They don't want to call it that because who the hell would pay 150$ for a forty?

it might not actually be banned, It could possibly be it's just not allowed to be called beer. In some places part of the definition of beer is that it be 5% acohol or less. Everything else is malt liquor.

It is actually not the highest alcohol beer on the market. I believe that title goes to Tactical Nuclear Penguin by BrewDog of Scotland. It clocks in at 32%, I believe.
