Hunters Shoot Caged Bucks On Pittsburgh-Area Deer Farm
Early Wednesday morning, a trespasser crossed the line when he opened fire on three bucks that were trapped inside a fence, posted with signs that read "No Hunting," authorities said.
State police describe what took place on Leskosek's farm as an act of animal cruelty.
"There's no way (the hunter) didn't see the fence. He just walked up and shot the deer in the pen," said deer farmer Donald Leskosek. "I just can't figure out what kind of person would do something like that."
Leskosek has been breeding the docile creatures for 12 years. Each animal is worth about $5,000, he said. Police said that two of the animals were asleep when they were shot.
"I was having a cup of coffee and I heard three shots. When I got outside, I found two dead deer about 8 feet apart, and a third one was dying when I got back here," said Leskosek.
Leskosek said he is certain that the shooter knew that what he was doing was wrong.
"I really enjoy raising animals and something like this makes me pretty angry. I have no clue who would do this, but they would have to be pretty deranged," the farmer said. "Three deer, three shots. There's no accident. I just hope they catch the guy."
Investigators have retrieved a bullet and are currently doing ballistics testing.

The 'people can't garden' was a quote from the other poster - who claimed people around him can't even garden because of the over-populated deer.
Deer populate against the general yearly food-source. Lots of grass, lots of babies.
Deer do not get to large herds like elk. The whole claim of a need to cull, based on over-population, is simply not true.
The only truth is that these people want to go out a shoot them for recreation. They ought to forget the BS, as it is unbecoming, and just tell the truth. - 2 years ago

Another point, if you really decide you are going to hunt, I think it would do well to go take one on a flush year and forgo, for the sake of management, on lean years.
Although, you would quickly see that the horde of licensed dumbies would invade your favorite woods with no regard whatever.
So one has to decide just what is good and how far can we achieve a real balance.

"People can't garden. There are few deer in modern times as well as all other game. "
With these two statements, you destroy your credibility for the rest of your post.
Blatantly wrong on both counts.

No, someone just told kids that hunting was a man thing - and they have this huge need to find that man - to be 'a man' - but it takes more to be a grown-up than shooting things.I used to live in the mountains. When those "hunters" come up with their camo clothes and orange shirts, their store-bought rifles and store-bought gear. They laugh at you.
I mean how silly do you think you look? Maybe you should go to Africa and wear the Britsh-expedition hats - with the little veil hanging off the back. Big hunter on Safari.
They'll take your money -
You do not need to go out and kill things - imagine someone killing you or your family and saying they were a big hunter-man.
You live in a cave or a hut - and make yourself a bow - well, that's different. Otherwise, stop being evil.
Evil is when you're out having fun, killing. It certainly is trading smart for stupid. - 2 years ago

Actually, there are more deer in the US today than there were in Colonial times.
Deer live on the margins of the forest, between where the forest begins and the open meadows end. They are not deep forest animals, nor do they live in open areas.
By cutting vast tracts of forest since Colonial times for human habitation, we have fragmented the vast forest that covered the East Coast from Florida to Maine, providing almost unlimited habitat for the deer.
They have taken full advantage of that, and are extremely overpopulated in some areas so badly that they often eat all vegetation bare up to six feet from the ground. They are definitely pests and truly need culling in many States.
In Maryland, where I live, they routinely come into a nearby neighborhood and eat anything they can get their teeth into. People there cannot garden anything without it being eaten by the deer.

"I just can't figure out what kind of person would do something like that."
Well, Bubba the White Bwano hunter would do it, who else?
Just think how much carnage could be forgone if they stayed home with their video games?
At least they wouldn't be taking out the top of the gene-pool and deluding a whole species, like most of these idiots do.Let me rephrase Stupid, slow, imbecilic idiots. It doesn't take brains to be a hunter-man - just enough beer.

I guess he pissed somebody off and they did a chicken shit deal of shooting his deer. There are a few farms that raise deer for high end restaurants. They also harvest the urine that hunters and photograhers use to attract deer.

"And now we also have proof that deer are not overpopulated like hunters would like you to think." Are you serious? It's an established fact that deer populations are out of control. For example:
http://www.deerwildlifealliance.org/Deer-Overpopulation-is-a-Serious-Problem.htm
http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20081023-SPORTS-810230378
http://reason.com/archives/2001/11/21/north-americas-most-dangerous
http://www.idausa.org/facts/deercontrol.html
If you want to make a case that hunting is an ineffective means of controlling deer populations, that's fine. But before you make some outrageous claim about how hunters lie about overpopulation so they can continue killing deer, please do a little bit of research.
