Exploding chewing gum kills student

As news stories go, this is a bizarre one. A 25-year-old Ukranian chemistry student was killed after the gum he was chewing apparently exploded, blowing the bottom portion of his face off.
The young man was working late on his computer on Sunday even when "a pop" was reportedly heard. When his family entered the room, they found him dead, with his jaw unattached from his face.
If that wasn't weird enough for you, apparently he had a bizarre habit of chewing gum after dipping it into citric acid (as you do), Russian news agency Ria Novosti said.
Police discovered packets of citric acid and what appeared to to be some kind of explosive material on a table beside the body. Unfortunately for the student, both substances look very similar and officers investigating the death think the young man confused the packets and put a gum covered with explosive material into his mouth.
