WA Plans to Cut an Additional 500 Million From Education

According to Washington State Superintendent Randy Dorn: "if the proposed budget passes it will be devastating to school districts already struggling to stay afloat financially. They will have to absorb $500 million in cuts to education for the 2010-11 school year on top of the $400 million cuts made during the 2009 Legislative session."

"As many as 5,000 teachers could be laid off. Added to the 1,300 (teachers lost in 2009.)"

"It cuts away at the heart of what we consider basic education. How can we expect our (underpaid) teachers, already stretched thin in their jobs, to teach standards to a class of 30 or 35 students?"

I encourage you to make your voice heard by contacting local and state representatives regarding important issues like these (http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials/).

P.S. Anyone remember 9 months ago when... "President Barack Obama today said he will seek tougher standards in schools, merit pay for teachers and reduced high-school dropout rates in a bid for a more educated and competitive workforce in a contracting economy."

    • thebigo... yes, that's why I said proposed... it's looking like the revised versions of the budget will still significantly impact education in that state. Please post links that support your comment.
