Bill Allows Obama Power to Shut Down Internet

Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.

They're not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency.

    • emergencies like this have a way of not ending or happening at convient points in the news cycle for whomever has the power to announce them. This is proven by both George Bush (the old terrorism threat color scam) and the Iranian government amongst other examples.

I'm a bit less worried about Obama abusing it than perhaps his successors, but I could see how a right winger might be worried more, so I have to say I mistrust this in general.

The article does not go into details though, so it's hard to say how dangerous it really is.

    • In regards to cyber-security, if the president deems it necessary, there should be a very clear protocol, to ensure that the affected section/s of the infrastructure can either be isolated, and or shutdown completely.

Once the cyber-security issue has been mitigated, and a complete analysis has been performed, individuals who where identified initially as a potential threat, should be closely monitored, but information of that individual should also be kept classified. Until proven, the innocence of individual/s must be maintained, as information leak could be damaging to not only the individual, but family as well, friends, associates, and colleagues.

If information is leaked by industry, then they could be in violation of federal rules., and should be held accountable, according to the excerpt of the bill. Unfortunately, the previous administration has cleared the telecommunication companies from having to uphold their accountability. So I am not sure how this would be enacted.

    • If and when Obama declares martial law it is the first step they will take to shut off all methods of communication with the outside world so no one will know the truth! The Patriot Act already allowed them to shut off communications so why we need another unconstitutional law is beyond any sense of logic but since we the people continue to allow them to take away our rights guess they will continue to pass these laws which re-inforce the already oppressive and unconstitutional laws BUSH got through and OBAMA not only allows to remain in force despite the unconstitutionality of those laws. Change we can believe in! what a joke! It's just more of the same!
