The Mandorla is the term for full body halo 02, which in this case is the most likely answer.
Some people interpret this as a divine womb, and I find the womb interpretation to be more valid than the brain idea. This is partly do to there being no evidence of Michelangelo dissecting human bodies like Leonardo; thus he wouldn't have the understanding to recreate a brain like form.
