    • The Mandorla is the term for full body halo 02, which in this case is the most likely answer.

      Some people interpret this as a divine womb, and I find the womb interpretation to be more valid than the brain idea. This is partly do to there being no evidence of Michelangelo dissecting human bodies like Leonardo; thus he wouldn't have the understanding to recreate a brain like form.

    • it is well known that the vatican had michaelangelo 'cover up' human organs.
      they apparently did not recognize the brain.

    • The surrounding cloak is a long used concept of the enclosure or cover that frames a deity. Such are seen in many works from the Roman period. A night Goddess will hold a billowing cloak - that imitates the sky. These often display the idea of the sky enclosing the deified.
