"It was unconscionable, [an] outrage, pick some adjectives and stick it in," the fuming mayor said at a news conference a day after The Post broke the scandal involving tragic mom Eutisha Revee Rennix, 25.
"The Fire Department, including EMS, is responsible for life-saving, and their first responsibility is to do that," the mayor said. "But even if they weren't part of the Fire Department sworn to protect all of us, just normal human beings, drop your coffee and go help somebody if they're dying. C'mon."
HELAYNE SEIDMAN
SENSELESS: Eutisha Rennix (above) died of cardiac arrest at a Brooklyn Au Bon Pain after two EMTs allegedly refused to help because they were on break.
The two EMTs were buying bagels in the Au Bon Pain at the Metrotech Center in Downtown Brooklyn on Dec. 9 when Rennix collapsed there -- and they allegedly ignored her.

I just went through something similar in Philadelphia. In spite of EMT's being told CPR was being done, they took their time. Once in the home, they did nothing to revive. Then I have found out that other units logged that they were here when they were not. EMT claimed to see what they did not see, Police in home did nothing to help me save my Michael.
In Philadelphia, call 911, they hang up on you if you do not talk to them. Forget the fact somebody is screaming in background trying to help ill person, forget about listening, sending help to that address. No, they just hang up and ignore call completly.

It's not as simple as it seems, which is evident if you know anything about the way an EMS system works. First of all they were dispatchers, dispatchers are not trained medics, they are given pre-made "flash cards" for pre-arrival care of an EMS crew, they are not prepared for actual caregiving. Secondly, in an emergency situation there is nothing else to do besides call 911, without their equipment any EMT or Paramedic can do little more than basic layman's CPR. Thus, the call to 911 was an absolute necessity. While I do believe more empathy could have been used by the dispatchers in such a situation, there is little more they could have done, particularly in the event of a cardiac arrest which requires a defibrillator, cardiac monitor to analyze the exact cardiac rhythms occuring, and IV medications to stabilize the abnormal heart functioning, were one to hope for the best possible outcome.
What I think should be taken from this is to be more grateful and thankful to working EMS crews during non-emergency situations. Rarely are crews given appreciation for the hard hours they work, the stressful situations they enter daily, and the dedication they give to patients who are rarely cooperative or honest. While it is unfortunate that this young lady lost her life, EMS services are not miracle workers, and that should be understood. Even in the best of caregiving situations the outcome may have been no different, and it is unfair to the rest of the hardworking dedicated majority of firefighters and EMS crew to lay blame across the board.

I had a feeling this was likely much more to this story than the sensational headline. Thank you very much for the details, I have been wondering about it quite a bit for the last few days.
Unfortunately, what is underlined here is the practice of the media to jump on the sensational headline, ignoring the facts for the story that will "sell" and promote arguement. As a member of the media I deplore this practice, and always wonder when I read such headlines, what is the true story behind it. Yet, we are all ready to believe the worst and condemn. I wonder how many news sources will clarify and report what you have just related?

I hope there is more to this story, as a nurse there are times that I question whether or not I would help someone outside the hospital setting for fear of being sued, stripped of my license and my career. (Yes it has happened before even the good samaritan law doesn't protect us all the time) But honestly, when it comes down to it I would help someone in need, all that fear would be pushed aside.

I heard also the same thing happens in prisons when pregnant inmates go into labor etc. The prison workers on public dime should get prosecuted too.
Unfortunately, we've bred decency out of life in America for so many working people, making it so hardscrabble to serve the corporate capitalists, who get profits at all costs, no matter how inhumane, while ordinary Americans learn to live in a cruel cruel world, looking out for number one, cause nobody else is. This situation reflects years of teaching indifference and selfishness to young people.
That was the rage under Reagan, now more of us are going to suffer because of it.

The worst case scenario for these two schmucks is that they face prison time and get sued by the family of the deceased. The best case scenario is that they get fired and have one hell of a time ever finding employment that pays more than minimum wage afterwards.
Holy balls, these people are emergency medical technicians and they didn't help her because they were on break? That excuse might fly if they were not in uniform and completely off the clock, but break? That's like an ER nurse refusing to help a patient who has been severely wounded in a car accident that just showed up in the ER because he/she is on his/her break and wants to see what'll happen on his/her TV show. Your in the business of saving lives, your goddamn break gets put on hold if something like this happens!

Where do I say anything about a "health care bill?" Only in your imagination. It is you who apparently cannot pass up a chance to take a dig where ever you can get one in.
This is about health care. Pregnancy care is health care. I am expressing the sentiment of this entire country on health care (The health care bill reflects that too). We do not give a flying f**k about anyone's health. All we care about is money. If the woman was rich you can bet the EMT's would have been there.

Perhaps the fact that the health care bill is about health care which would include pregnancy eludes you.
I did not say health care bill. I did not mean health care bill. I meant exactly what I said. It's true that the recent debates on the health care bills bring these things to light and there is a strong correlation.
But the bottom line of my intent here is that people in this country have an attitude about health care that is is for profit only, it is for the rich who can afford it and everyone else can die and fuck off. These EMTs obviously embody this attitude. This is relevant to this thread big fucking time.
The problem with health care in this country is America's attitude that it is not a right. It is only a privilege for the rich. Those are the facts plain and simple. Choke on 'em.

But this doesn't have anything to do with health care in general, this story is about the severe lack of integrity of these two EMTs and the horrifying lack of humanity they showed that resulted in a woman's death. Better healthcare probably wouldn't have made them change their mind about helping her.

JonRaymond:
It does have to do with healthcare. This is exactly the point everyone keeps missing. The health care problem in this country is due to one basic principle: health care is a human right, not a luxury for the rich. The sentiment that people's health is based on their ability to pay permeates our country from every doctor to every hospital to every EMT.
If everyone in this country, if our own government worked on the premise and believed that health care is a human right, that anyone in need of health care deserves our immediate attention to the fullest regardless of who they are, we wouldn't have EMTs feeling that someone in trouble is nothing to worry about. It is a national attitude problem and these EMTs embody this sentiment.
This story is an example of what healthcare in America is, a luxury for the rich.

i agree with JR. he's absolutely right. this has everything to do with health care. if these EMT's weren't privatized you can bet they sure as hell wouldn't have sat on their collective ass and let someone die right in front of them, if just for the fact of one of their superiors crawling up their butts and losing their jobs. if it was their duty, instead of their profession, they might have helped. i say might because even in the other civil cervices, that all the rethug trolls seem to have forgotten are socialized, eg, the post office, the fire dept, the police, the military, etc,etc...it's more than a job, it's your civic duty to perform the basic functions of your station, and failing to do so can and will lead to your termination. (however, this does not stop some of those that i named from abusing the station that they have been granted. but that's not the point.), in some cases, with the result of criminal charges. not so with EMTs. EMT/EMS are completely privatized, so why should they care?
