Music Linked to Marijuana Use

"Students who listen to music with the most references to marijuana are almost twice as likely to have used the drug than their peers whose musical tastes favor songs less focused on substance use," said University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researcher Dr. Brian Primack, who led the study.

"Interestingly, we also found that exposure to marijuana in music was not associated with other high-risk behaviors, such as excessive alcohol consumption," Primack said. "This suggests that there is a real link between the marijuana lyrics and marijuana use."

Among the study participants, 12 percent identified themselves as current marijuana users, with 32 percent identifying themselves as having previously tried the substance. The researchers analyzed the content of songs that the students reported listening to.

The average participant listened to 21.8 hours of music per week and heard about 40 marijuana references in music per day.

Researchers controlled for such demographic variables as age, race, gender, parental education and school grades in analyzing the data.

"Although it may be that heavy exposure to music about marijuana causes marijuana smoking, it may also be that those who smoke marijuana seek out music with lyrics related to marijuana," Primack said."

    • funny thing is the endocannabinoid system has receptors in our bodies whether one tokes or not....

to resist just causes a little, hmmm, out of tune note that the rest of the orchestra of life is quickly ready to absorb, hence the vast array of a scientific experiential collective chimes in- you can watch, tune in or tune out which ever... that's the real beauty,
CHOICE determined by the individual to finally 'be' it's own beautifully collective self.

    • well, no shit, Sherlock! I didn't listen to music that mentioned marijuana when I was growing up (of course, all we had back then was an Edison phonograph that played 78s) :D Thusly, I never smoked marijuana, never had the desire to try it- same for pills, too. Yes, really!

    • I don't smoke weed, I hate it, taste like and smells like shit....
I listen to Country here and there, but I'm Asian... I listen to black metal sometimes but I prefer rap, I don't sag cause I listen to rap but that also means I don't wear skinny jeans cause I listen to pop/rock sometimes... Researches like this don't make sense to me what was the point of it... what is he trying to prove?

    • Meh, a lot of the music I listen to talks about toking up, but I don't smoke. But since most of the youth dose, and music references it quite often, this study seems kind of tainted.

I'm always a bit suspicious of people that don't like reggae. Of course I won't defend that, because it's lame, but I am suspicious of them. There's just something not right with that. To me it seems one of the most universal styles of music out there. I found it very odd when I was travelling in Nepal, just how popular reggae was there, but then I realized the somewhat similar political backdrop.

And dubstep IS NOT reggae, in case you didn't know. Although I like it as well.

    • music also tends to be linked to peace... i think bob's music is a perfect example... plus we need to stop calling this "PLANT" a drug

How so? American neo-conservatives certainly enjoy their country music. Every military has a marching band tradition. Hitler found great beauty in the music of Richard Wagner. Neo-Nazis enjoy skinhead punk. I've met Chinese nationalists who simultaneously enjoy sugary pop music while angrily wishing death upon the West.

    • People do drugs because they want to. Stop trying to find something to blame and come up with cures for diseases already! Damn medical researchers are wasting our tax dollars...

    • Definitely think that those who smoke dope seek out the music related to it.

They should have also took into account where the participants lived to make the study better.

This study would be even more interesting if they examined any links between other drugs and behaviors with music. Otherwise, it seems like a waste of time.

"Much like you choose a restaurant because you like their food. No one likes something just because its what was placed in front of them..........."

On the contrary, people DO like things because they're put in front of them. It's a well studied phenomenon. Familiarity breeds preference.

If you don't believe me- pick a food you don't particularly like, not one you hate, but one you just don't like. Keep it in your refrigerator, eat a little once a week, considering each time whether you like it or not, and see how long it takes before you start feeling different about it. Do it for long enough and your opinion will likely change completely, and you'll feel odd when it's NOT in your refrigerator.

I have to agree with CI on this one, humans ARE rather sheepish.

    • Am I the only one who thinks Bob Marley's music is dry and boring?

Gives me the same "bleh" feeling that I got from being at Home Depot or watching The Adventures of Pete & Pete.

Only because I've heard it SO many times that it now nauseates me.

As far as reggae goes, I'm preferential to Burning Spear's 100th anniversary Garvey album, which I rarely listen to now but never tire of.

    • Uhhhmmm...Yeah...So here's the deal! People listen to music they can relate to! That doesn't exactly mean they do a lot of the stuff in the lyrics to the sings they listen to,but isn't pretty much a no duh that people that smoke pot would like songs about pot? OH! & if Ravi Shankar & George Harrison didn't make it clear enough, the classical musicians of India rarely use drugs of ANY kind! Hmmm...If this study is valid, then I do have to wonder about the people who listent songs about playing on yellow road lines! LOL

    • Yeah and listening to heavy metal means you're more likely to go out and kill people right? They've been blaming music for promoting sex & drugs since the 60's, it's merely a catalyst, a scapegoat the right and morons alike can point at and blame instead of taking personal responsibility or parental responsibilities.

      Example-

This underage talentless twat Miley Cirus pole dances half naked on national TV to her juvenile demographic and parents still go out and buy their kid's her merch and support her and her disgusting agenda, but act so shocked when little Annie ends up dressing like a whore in school and loses her virginity at 12 in the boy's locker room...is it Miley's fault or the parent's fault for being so fucking naive? It's always easier to blame others isn't it America?

    • So many great musicians smoke pot as inspiration to make their music and often sing about it in their lyrics, people listen to this music and smoke pot because of it, maybe they then get inspired because of this and create yet more great music! Awesome, the cycle of pot continues!

    • To me, the last line is the most important:

" it may also be that those who smoke marijuana seek out music with lyrics related to marijuana," Primack said."

BING! I think this is much more likely than the other way around.

it's probably true, but what he's not saying is that it's probably also true of almost everything else.

People who listen to Christian contemporary music are more likely to speak in tongues, people who listen to country are more likely to wear cowboy boots, and people who listen to the wiggles are more likely to have kids.

IMHO it's not a "this is BS" as much as it is a "So? what's your point?"

All music has a multifacet of connotations, canabis lyrics are freedom songs we all carry inside... regardless of whether you smoke, drink, pop pills or meditate... to each their own and the coctail won't be so volatile. JOYEAUX NOEL- namaste- may peace find it's way into your heart in the coming year...
