Study: Women Don't Park As Well As Men - U.S. News Rankings and Reviews

We’ve all heard the jokes about women drivers. But until now, we’ve never seen much scientific proof that women are actually worse drivers than men. Women, prepare to defend yourselves -- According to the U.K’s Telegraph, a German study shows men can park faster and more accurately than the fairer sex.

Conducted by German-based Ruhr University professor Dr. Claudia Wolf -- note that she’s a woman, so you can put aside any suspicions of bias -- the study included 65 subjects who were asked to park an Audi A6. The men and women were timed and tested for accuracy in head-on, reverse and parallel parking maneuvers. The result: Men parked the A6 an average of 20 seconds faster than women. In addition, they parked the car closer to the center of the spot.

While men may see this as proof that they’re simply better drivers, the results may have less to do with their abilities and more to do with genetics. The Telegraph reports: “While the researchers expected the women volunteers to be slower, they were surprised to find that the cautious approach did not lead to a tidier final result,” and adds, “the research confirmed previous findings that men have better co-ordination and spatial awareness than women, and take more risks behind the wheel.”

Of course, it would be unfair to apply such a small study to the whole of female drivers. Autoblog is skeptical: “We're not sure that a study of 65 random test subjects is a big enough sample to definitively say that men are better parkers than women, but the test does give guys a small feather to stick in their caps nonetheless. We'd suggest not bragging about it to your wives and girlfriends, though, because that could lead to... unpleasantness.”

    • dude we dont hate you man...not all women are like this though...but women are more likely to get into more fender benders than guys. And its not true that women are worse drivers than men. Guys are 77% more likely to get into a fatal car accident then women.

      Dr Claudia Wolf from Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, who led the study, said that the research confirmed previous findings that men have better co-ordination and spatial awareness than women, and take more risks behind the wheel.

      "These prejudices exist and as a scientist I decided the find out if they are true or based on myth," she told the Mail on Sunday.

      "I don't think that feminism or the cause of women is in any way set back by these findings. It only proves what previous studies about the spatial differences between men and women have shown.

      "Besides, it is not as if there was a massive failing by women. It is just about parking – not the triumph of men over women."

    • If you accept the findings at face value, it probably has more to do with gender culture than physiological differences. Boys are generally raised to be physical, play sports and video games, which all require hand eye coordination.

    • I dont know about that. My little wife can park an 18 wheeler in a spot most men wouldnt even thing about trying to get into. and she can back into a dock as good as I can and I have been driving trucks for 25 years. Course I was her teacher so she had a good start.........

    • I have known a ferw women who are very poor w/ directions and maps too....just my experience,...no scientific experiment conducted.
      The men I know have totalled more cars than the women i know, and tend to be riskier drivers ....again ...just from my personal experience.....

    • Only an insecure woman would hate you for this article..Was the test conducted on German or American women?...I have seen test that found women to be the better driver, and have less accidents..

    • I do see alot of horrible women drivers. I however am not one of them, thankfully. I built my car to my specifications. My little Honda corners on rails and is small and quick. I am a woman, and I do not hate you for posting this article. The problem is the ones who are really bad, are never going to admit it. I make it a point to point out to them in some way, there stupidity, not rude but right on the line between honest and rude. For instance they don't signal their intent, well I just let them know their signal isn't working.

      I think you get offended too easily. Also, I fail to see how that was a waste of my time. I wrote that comment to start an argument with someone like yourself because I'm bored, and here we are. So if anything, you're wasting your time.

      Is this study going to lead to an improvement in our way of life? Probably not. All this study has given me is another pointless bit of knowledge that I might tell someone one day at a party, and they'll go "Huh, cool", then forget about it 5 minutes later. Call me crazy but I can think of better places the money to do this study could have gone.

    • Maybe it's the car itself, the A6 does look like a "guys" type of car.

    • Actually, I have seen article after article about how women are better than men at this, that and the other. Just their longer life expectancy alone is enviable. Parking aptitude would not necessarily be in my top 10 list of the male advantages that would be needed to balance the scales, so to speak...but this will at least allow me to put my rally cap on...
