Barack Obama gets an 'F' for protecting Americans

There is no more solemn duty for an American commander-in-chief than the martialling of “all elements of American power” – the phrase Obama himself used on Monday – to protect the people of the United States. In that key respect, Obama failed on Christmas Day, just as President George W. Bush failed on September 11th (though he succeeded in the seven years after that).

Yes, the buck stops in the Oval Office. Obama may have rather smugly given himself a “B+” for his 2009 performance but he gets an F for the events that led to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab boarding a Detroit-bound plane in Amsterdam with a PETN bomb sewn into his underpants. He said today that a “systemic failure has occurred”. Well, he’s in charge of that system.

The picture we’re getting is more and more alarming by the hour. Here are some key elements to consider:

    • Bush was in office less than 9 months and 911 happened. Has anything like 911 happened since Obama's watch? I think not. Lets not forget that since bush stole the presidency he had a formal letter by the cia that al qaeda was to attack the us for months before 911 and did nothing other than go on vacations to Texas. A state that that looser was not even a native of.

Next time anyone wants to compare democrats to republicans, just remember that 911 HAPPENED ON REPUBLICANS WATCH AND THEY WERE WARNED, but they decided to go on vacation.

Republicans can pretend that this is not a fact but the truth is that it is!!!!

    • Turns out Airline security falls under homeland security and if they fail then Obama fails. We also need to try and be one step ahead of terrorists with technology and techniques for sniffing out bombs and preventing attacks. If Bush did such a poor job then why is Obama not doing anything to continue the upkeep of Homeland security which is what the airlines fall under? He's been in office almost a year and I have yet to see anything that indicates progress.

    • I agree. It's like republicans and conservatives can conveniently pretend like 911 and the shoe bomber attack did not happen on their watch. What a sad joke they want to play!

    • This is just silly. Zero Deaths on American soil by foreign elements does not constitute an "F". Comparing Obama's record to GWB's is just not sensible. Hating Obama is no excuse to go posting ridiculous statements.

    • This really is about President Obama failing to project that mean, tough, and macho "Big Daddy" attitude the conservative America can't seem to live without. We don't care.

    • To compare what one retard did to the souls killed in 9/11 disgraces their memory even more than bush managed to. That and you can not argue that our security system is crappy and not strong enough AND that the Obama administration had 100% knowledge of the attack from the crappy not good enough system.

    • He could have warned us? Wha? Because Obama knew the guy was getting on that plane but decided to have a cheeseburger instead of warning America, right? Whoa. Somebody hand me a shovel, it's getting pretty deep...

    • There is a difference between being the President of the United States and being the direct supervisor of a specific dept in the State Dept and being the head of security in Amersterdam.

Just being President doesn't automatically mean that Obama "knows" everything that is happening all over the world nor is he directly and personally responsible for every event that occurs.

    • Uh oh. Some guy at the State Dept just took an HOUR long lunch but marked his timecard as only 1/2 an hour!!!!

Clearly President Obama should resign from office immediately for allowing that kind of FRAUD to occur under his watch!!!!

(Fanatic Obama-haters....do you see how ridiculous that kind of "logic" sounds?)

Fuck that. I completely agree with Bishopobispo, it's ridiculous to compare one guy burning his leg in a failed attack to the thousands of people who died when planes crashed into the World Trade towers. As a person with logic and reason I'm surprised at the analogy, but as a New Yorker I'm downright insulted!

ibrake - Only the terrorist was injured in that event. Woulda/Coulda/Shoulda aside, there is no comparison to the tragedy of 9/11 and to make one is very insensitive. I did not lose anyone that day but I have friends who did and my best friend's father was a NYC firefighter...you can't imagine the pain and sorrow these people went through. Even to this day we have no real fucking memorial, firefighters and policemen are getting sick from the chemicals and particles they inhaled at ground zero and there are children growing up with no parents because of George Bush's "mistake" that day. How in the world can you compare that to anything that occurred this week? It's a total insult!

The only insult here is that youre putting the lives that died in 9/11 above any other terror attack that may have not killed as many.

how many people need to die?

im sorry delia but every terrorist attack is another 9/11 to me. no matter how many people died or didnt die.

"The only insult here is that youre putting the lives that died in 9/11 above any other terror attack that may have not killed as many."

This doesn't even come close to being true. In the event we are discussing NO ONE DIED.

Terrorists attacks occur around the world all the time. I hope your sympathy truly does go out to all of the people who die in needless violence; but that's not the issue here.

The analogy IMO was in poor taste.

how is it in poor taste? shouldnt we look back and learn something from 9/11?

there are many reasons this analogy is true?

most of which i already pointed out in bishopobispo's thread

      security breach

      intel beforehand

inaction to act on that intel

    • DeliaTheArtist:

Of course we should learn from 9/11, but the article states

"to protect the people of the United States. In that key respect, Obama failed on Christmas Day, just as President George W. Bush failed on September 11th."

This is in poor taste because no one in America was hurt on Christmas day. To say that Obama failed JUST AS Bush did is simply untrue; in one instance, America was not harmed. In the other, we were attacked on our own soil and thousands of people died. If you can not see the enormous difference between those situations then we'll have to agree to disagree and leave it at that.

What would you have Obama do? Should we have full body scans, check every bag, and deny every suspicious traveler access to the US on every flight into the country?

Yours is a stupid analogy. 4 planes were hijacked on 9/11. 3 were allowed to hit their targets. We can only be grateful for the bravery of the passengers for the one that did not. Ordinarily these planes would be shot down long before reaching any substantial target, but somehow two managed to crash into the WORLD TRADE CENTER and one into the fucking PENTAGON. If you can possibly relate this magnitude of failure to some jackass with a custom pair of underwear I have no words for you.

What's worse, the Bush administration repeatedly used 9/11 as an excuse to deny Americans their civil liberties and justify unprecedented international aggression, the results of which we are obviously still experiencing today.

There should certainly be a comprehensive review of the security failures which allowed it to happen, but I applaud Obama for resisting the urge to scare the hell out of America all over again and seize the power that that fear provides.

IBRAKE - You hit it on the head. This administration has us living in a 9/10/2001 mentality. That is not realistic and makes Americans less safe on a daily basis. For that he earned his "F" grade.

    • PDB-Aug 2001 " Bin Laden determined to attack within the U.S using aircraft" that warning turned out real good, huh? The Patriot Act has done nothing but drive these security agencies further apart and not sharing info. I remember the last Admin. using the same excuses " the last admin. this and that... U.S.S Cole", typical bullshit. Does anyone remember " we were misled by the C.I.A" after the invasion of Iraq, then the president giving the CIA director Tenent the highest honor given to a civilian. Fortunatly no one died this time compared to all the lives that where lost during Bush's time. Think about it 9/11, Afganistan (civilian and ally), Iraq (civilian and ally), Katrina (black & poor folk) not to mention lost limbs, burnt flesh and brain disorders ("cause you go to war with what you got not what you want") I'm pissed over this lapse in security too. The Republicans are blood thirsty, greedy, bigoted idiots while the Democrats are a bunch of pussies that won't stick up for themselves. I've never seen a political party so quick to accuse a sitting president for shit not his fault as much as now. He has been so de-legitimized, just cause he is black, it can't be because of his liberal politics, cause he is more middle than anyone made him out to be. F#ckem all! All of our leaders should be prison raped except for the ones who may enjoy it (they know who I'm talking about). Greed, money, fame and power is what drives our elected officials. If you think this is some drug-fueled tirade you would be partially right, I get this way when I do "bong hits" and watch FUX News. Peace

    • I am sure Obama grades himself higher than this. I turn the radio/news off when I hear him say that he will do this and he will do that, instead of saying we...a prime display of his narcissism. But when the time of accountability comes, he scapegoats his cabinet or the previous administration. He kind of reminds me of myself 15-20 years ago, when I young (15-20 yo), dumb, and full of crap.

the analogy this article is trying to make is that there was a security breach like that of 9/11 evidence to prevent the the attack like 9/11 complete inaction from our president like on 9/11

no ones trying to compare the number of lives lost
