Good points. It's a tough tightrope to walk between free expression and censorship, especially when there are people who will use a cartoon as an excuse to go after someone with an axe.

This guy tried to kill another person. He is a criminal and should be treated as such. The cartoonist did no wrong in my eyes, but the reaction to his work should have been foreseen by the Danish publishers. Actions have consequences. People get offended by all sorts of stupid shit. Just read the arguments over religion on this site (before they get removed by the MAN).

One good cartoonist is more valuable to culture than every religious text on the planet.
( when your weighing values, thats my assessment. ) - 2 years ago

I can see why you'd say that. In Shakespeare's plays, the fool plays a significant role in that he is allowed to speak truth to power. Today political cartoonists serve that function.

That is along the lines of my general train of thought; they serve to 'free up' thinking rather than simply reinforcement of of set patterns. I am sure that religious/philosophical iconoclastic figures have GREAT social value,.....WHILE THEY ARE ALIVE tipping over carts and throwing out the money lenders,....and (perhaps) shortly there after. Enshrined in the writs of men,....even the "true" fans,...that followed,.........pfffft. I really HATE the phrase "Thinking Outside The Box"......but I'll take a cartoonists "framing of narrative" over a box of enshrined holy relics any day!

That man deserves no tolerance, take him out back, let him say a prayer to his god and send that bastard to him. Jesus gets mocked by just about everything and you dont see me going out and trying to kill someone.

Another example of religious extremism - nothing good comes from religion, only ignorance, superstition and bigotry.

Danish cartoonist hid in "panic room" as man wielding an ax cracked front door glass of home, police say. http://bit.ly/8OpXxL

We seem to be too caught up in our own self-inflicted identity crisis to contemplate the implications of Muslims integrating into Western nations. Nowhere is this influx more obvious than in big cities, and we don't seem to be capable of asking why, if they are so against our way of life, are they coming West in record numbers?
