Yummy! Ammonia-Treated Pink Slime Now in Most U.S. Ground Beef.

According to today's New York Times, The "majority of hamburger" now sold in the U.S. now contains fatty slaughterhouse trimmings "the industry once relegated to pet food and cooking oil," "typically including most of the material from the outer surfaces of the carcass" that contains "larger microbiological populations."
This "nasty pink slime," as one FDA microbiologist called it, is now wrung in a centrifuge to remove the fat, and then treated with AMMONIA to "retard spoilage," and turned into "a mashlike substance frozen into blocks or chips".
Thus saving THREE CENTS a pound off production costs. And making the company, Beef Products Inc., a fortune. $440 million/year in revenue. Ain't that something?
* jennifer poole's diary :: ::
*
And to emphasize: this pink slime isn't just in fast food burgers or free lunches for poor kids:
With the U.S.D.A.’s stamp of approval, the company’s processed beef has become a mainstay in America’s hamburgers. McDonald’s, Burger King and other fast-food giants use it as a component in ground beef, as do grocery chains. The federal school lunch program used an estimated 5.5 million pounds of the processed beef last year alone.
Bush's U.S.D.A. also allowed these "innovators" to get away with listing the ammonia as "a processing agent" instead of by name. And they also OKd the processing method -- and later exempted the hamburger from routine testing of meat sold to the general public -- strictly based on the company's claims of safety, which were not backed by any independent testing.
Because the ammonia taste was so bad ("It was frozen, but you could still smell ammonia," said Dr. Charles Tant, a Georgia agriculture department official. "I’ve never seen anything like it.") the company started using a less alkaline ammonia treatment, and now we know -- thanks to testing done for the school lunch program -- that the nasty stuff isn't even reliably killing the pathogens.
I've been thinking about an action item on this issue, and I've got three ideas: a. write Michelle Obama through this web form: http://www.whitehouse.gov/... or snail mail: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500; 2. print out the NY Times article and give it to the manager of your local supermarket, and ask them if they sell any kind of ground beef that doesn't contain this "pink slime" or if their butchers will grind meat fresh for you; 3. just stop buying the damned stuff altogether.

Things like this make me glad that my family hunts deer, and butchers enough to last the entire year.. buy our beef as fresh as it gets (right off the live cow), and get our dairy products from a local family owned dairy.

Program: NOW on PBS
Episode: Food, Inc.Americans have a longstanding love affair with food -- the modern supermarket has, on average, 47,000 products. But do we really know what goes into making the products we consume? David Brancaccio talks with filmmaker Robert Kenner, the director of Food, Inc., which takes a hard look at the secretive and surprising journey food takes on the way from processing plants to our dinner tables.

At one point in "Food, Inc." the person being interviewed said that his salmonella tainted meat filler, cleansed with ammonia was in "70% of American hamburgers," and although he "had some competition," he soon hoped to be in "100%."
The movie "Food, Inc." was an eye opener that I highly recommend.

The meat/fish industry is awful. I am so glad that things like this make it into the news. People need to know what is happening. I am a vegan, but I support peoples' right to eat whatever they choose. I just hope that this article, and others like it, will empower people to come up with their own conscious decision of what they eat, or where they shop.

Ammonia is a by-product of muscle effort. We make it inside us. Since most Americans are not working hard labor jobs that made EXTRA we can likely get it in the food and not suffer ill effects, just a shortened lifespan (general overall degradation). Very few people would actually get sick. Most of it is likely cooked out. That's why Bailey78 said the burgers were shriveling up he's cooking out all the bad stuff.
I think the reason the FDA scientists are not concerned is because they all believe the human cell has a pretty much set lifespan whether we eat this or eat that. I imagine they justify the genetically-modified vegetables with the same reasoning. It just really doesn't matter, the experts think, we could be eating Dog or Cat food wouldn't matter. The stomach's digestive juices will take care of it is likely what they were taught in Human Food School.

Bush never had his hands directly in this mess first of all, second just like every other part of the government what they tell bush and what they actually do are two different things. If you think this is incorrect then you are retarded and should avoid talking about politics because you obviously have no idea the kind of backstabbing that goes on. I eat McDonalds alot more then I should and have never been ill or had a jiggling mass on a bun fron ANY of the places I have eaten. Also if you want to blame bush for this then what is obama doing about it? I know exactly what he's doing about this... NOTHING, not a damn thing is being done.

Since I have been on current, better than a year now...I have had the experience of learning more about food and foodstuff that I never thought I'd want to know.
I eat meat about once a week now.... I used to buy organic meat until Whole Foods bought out Wild Oats and quit selling meat at affordable prices. And you can't find the variety Wild Oats had.
So now, I eat a lot more veggies and beans and always get organic when I can...though I am skeptical about some organic labels.
So with that said.....outside of the fact that pink gooey stuff is your ground meat, a bacteria is also sprayed on your steaks, roasts, etc. to keep them looking all red and pretty longer.
Doesn't mean they taste any better, or that the meat isn't on the verge of being rotten...but it do look pretty! - 2 years ago

This is sadly further evidence that "food" is no longer food in this country but a solely a vehicle for profit. Just like the tobacco industry re-engineered their product and target-marketed to maximize its consumption, so too is the so-called "food" industry. This is wreaking havoc on human lives and our best response is that individuals should be responsible for what they eat? Who would think to ask, does this meat contain pink slime treated with ammonia?
Fake and processed food should be labeled clearly as such. This accounts for at least 90% of what is sold in grocery stores.
Sadly, even for the stuff that is clearly labeled, few Americans know the ingredients of real food. That bread is generally made of only flour, yeast, water, and salt. Or that yogurt is simply milk and enzymes (the fruit and other stuff is best added fresh). Further, we're under the delusion that food should be always plentiful, cheap, convenient, and have a long shelf-life. It is none of these things.
Sadly, too few of us realize any of this.

On a positive note, there are a lot of small regional supermarket chains that have a butcher on site. You can talk to them about how they do things, they'd probably even let you look around their work area. I went and talked to a butcher at one today, he said they don't use ammonia on anything and they are real particular about quality...

Jan is correct in this too because bacteria are a food source, but what can happen is if a person has a cavity or cut in their mouth the bacteria can go straight into the bloodstream and into the brain very quick, not through the stomach's digestive juices. Such blood-traveling bacteria can also make a beeline into the heart muscle.
I heard a news report just yesterday that some people are starting to Fast every other day, helping them lose weight. By doing that they may very well be creating a bacteria defense system. A body stuffed with bacteria appears fat.

The system/special interests/lobbyists are too busy working for their own self interest at freedom's expense. They love protectionism/slavery and regulations that they setup for themselves, the last thing they want is a market that is more competitive and easier to enter.
Statism will ALWAYS do this, the more money you throw at D.C., the more special interests and bigger government gets. Politics is coercion.

Don't worry, the government will fix it.....hahahahaha
What a joke, to think that people still believe the USDA and statism can 'help' us.....nothing will change....it's statism that is evil and that oligopolized the meat industry in the first place, this started LONG ago! Even Upton Sinclair admitted before he died that most of his meat packing regulations actually went to the BENEFIT of big business, and that regulations in the end helped the government backed corporatist state push out smaller competitors who couldn't pay for the regulations and taxes. I wish there were more small companies worried about reputation and quality versus the status quo, government backed corporatist state that looks to rent seek through government advantages. What we need to do is stop the coercion that props up these industries, but that would require a freer society....and most people have been brainwashed away from that......

I used to work for a big grocery chain with their own meat processing plant. Hamburger was always gross. The tubes of hamburger used to turn a kind of sickly gray/green color after a while. I asked one time about sending that burger to the stores and I was told that there is nothing wrong with it, they will re-grind it at the store and it will look fine. That was funny because in theier store's meat department there were signs prominently displayed which said "We do not re-grind our hamburger"...
But hey, it's cheap :-)

This is sickening and frightening and I am sure that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to additives in meat products.
This gives A LOT more support to eating local.
I'm lucky enough to live in close proximity to organic beef, organic chicken, organic ostrich and organic pork farms where you can visit when you wish to see how the animals are farmed. This is the only meat my family has eaten for the past 5 years and I am VERY grateful for that, especially after reading this article.
