The Sea Shepherds and the Japanese are blaming each other for the sinking, but anyone with real sea legs would instantly recognize the culprit: The Shepherds renamed the speedboat from Earthrace to Ady Gil. Every sailor knows it’s the worst kind of bad luck to rename a vessel.

If you’ve seen the TV series “Whale Wars,” you know all about the Sea Shepherds, those activists who try to obstruct Japanese whalers, to the chagrin of whale eaters and Greenpeace alike. The group just lost a very expensive carbon fiber and Kevlar speedboat in the craft’s maiden confrontation with a Japanese whaling vessel.

Look at second 13 that is when the Ady Gil started. Boohoo for the idiot captain who almost got his crew killed. Yes you probably shouldn't eat whales but in this case they are in the right. At least in the law of seamanship.

Like Clint Eastwood said in Gran Torino, "have you ever thought that there are some people you just don't fuck with," and the Maru was "That Guy." It's their own fault. The Japanese take their whaling/fishing industry very seriously and those yahoos in the little rich kid boat deserve and are at fault for what happened.

Effective enough to make front page of the NY Times e-edition yesterday. Sacrifice for publicity. Really score one to Sea Shepherd Captain Watson aboard the Steve Irwin and the brave sailors aboard Ady Gil.

The Whale Wars guys are okay, but they are still pansies since they are on a TV show that has to tone down the actions they take.

Wow, that Bat Boat ain't going anywhere after that. You really have to wonder how effective these guys are. I watched the first series the other week and even i was frustrated at the lack of options and tactics they can actually employ against the whalers.
If you are going to do it, they should just sink the Maru and take a bit of jail time after all they constantly say on the show, they are willing to die for the whales no?
Shame lost that awsome boat though, but throwing stinky liquid is a bit of a joke! - 2 years ago

Thanks slarabee - to me, it's like letting the door slam into the guy behind you because you are too lazy to hold it open for them - no, there's no door police to go after you, but it's just a common courtesy - same with checking to see if the story has already been posted - common courtesy.

Real pirates get shot and killed at sea. Real pirates get blown out of the water by people with bigger an badder guns. Go point a gun at somebody on the water and see what happens. You had better do a little research before you go talking about things you know nothing about.

The Ady Gil was under way to say it was not is to lie to yourself and others. There is wheel wash comeing from behind the boat that tells me they were moveing. You do do get wheel wash from sitting still. The captain put the crew and the vessel in harms way. They got run over because the captain was playing chicken with a much larger vessel. No captain in his right mind would have done such an act. I have spent A lot of time on the water and have seen some people do so stupid stunts but this takes the cake. the captain of the Ady Gil should have his captains license revoked.

Honestly dude I think you are wrong. In those choppy waters everything leaves a trail, especially since this thing glides on fins as to slip through the water easier. The increased wake after 10 seconds in the video is due to the displacement of the Maru 2 pulling the Ady Gil toward it. That ship is so much larger it actually creates a little dip in the surface of the ocean and the Ady Gil looks like it got sucked down into this depression.
In other words, they got rammed.

Seems a bit harsh to continue hosing them down after smashing their Batboat into smithereens. Kick a man while he's down, why don't you.

I do agree with that. The continued hosing was unnecessary after the accident. However it's hard to argue that responsibility for the accident lay exclusively with either party.

Smallgod are you blind?!?!?!?!?! The Ady Gil is dead in the water!!!! It was not moving!!!! The whalers rammed the Ady Gil! There is almost zero wave wake behind the Ady Gil for the fist 10 seconds of the video. After that the displacement of the Maru just sucked the Ady Gil under its bow!

And that's the Japanese boat's fault how? The Ady Gil is supposed to, by law, do its best to avoid collisions. It did nothing, except move forward into the Japanese boat at the last minute - perhaps in an attempt to pass around or block the front of the boat. There was plenty of time for them to move, they did not need to be that close to the ship, and there's no way the Japanese ship will be found to be solely liable for this incident.
Your pastor's testes do not matter when it comes to the law.
