Obama orders improvements in security policies

President Obama on Thursday ordered a series of steps to improve the government’s ability to collect, share, analyze and act on intelligence of terrorist threats, saying the findings of a government review of the attempted airline bombing on Christmas Day revealed significant shortcomings in national security.

“We are at war,” Mr. Obama said in remarks from the White House East Room. While he promised not to “succumb to a siege mentality that sacrifices” America’s civil liberties for security, he called for the immediate strengthening of the nation’s terrorism watch lists by expanding the criteria on adding people to those lists.

“In the never-ending race to protect our country, we have to stay one step ahead of a nimble adversary,” Mr. Obama said. “That’s what these steps are designed to do.”

The president said intelligence reports involving threats to the United States would be distributed more widely among agencies.

“We must follow the leads that we get and we must pursue them until plots are disrupted,” Mr. Obama said. “We can’t sit on information to protect the American people.”

The White House made public the declassified account of how a suspected terrorist managed to elude intelligence officials and board an airplane with an explosive mixture concealed in his underwear. The classified version of the report offered a far starker view, officials said, of how close the United States came to averting tragedy.

The president said the missteps were not the fault of one individual or one agency. He took responsibility for the failures, saying: “The buck stops with me.”

The recent failed attack on a US passenger jet traveling from Amsterdam to Detroit was a set-up provocation controlled by US intelligence, author and journalist Webster Tarpley stated to RT.

After that, a mentally deficient young man who doubtfully could make it from one gate to another managed to illegally enter Nigeria and get on a plane to Amsterdam.

“There was a well-dressed Indian man who brought him to the gate and said, ‘my friend does not have a passport, get him on, he is Sudanese, we do this all the time – that is impossible!” said Tarpley.

    • We are not at war with a religion. Were at war with the radical militant fringe group that gives Islam a bad name. Also most Muslims dont live in the Middle East theyre mostly spread throughout Asia and Africa. In fact Indonesia has the largest Muslim population by percentage in the world. When we start bombing Jakarta let me know.

    • I concur, Saladin. I know so many peaceful, loving muslim families that I can't imagine any truly significant percentage of them becoming violent extremists. Certainly there are tens of thousands of Islamist extremists. There are also probably hundreds of thousands of Muslims who have very legitimate reasons to hate. If roles were reversed and some Iraqi warplane accidentally/negligently dropped a bomb on my house, killed my family and then had the audacity to refer to those deaths as "collateral damage" I can say for a certainty that my commitment to peace would be sorely challenged.

    • Meanwhile...all of these people are missing the point, that if this so-called "TSA" is going to be effective at doing its job, it needs the right training and the right tools. TSA can't find ANYTHING today except for unopened water bottles and unexposed laptops, so in response, geniuses now are proposing to add full-body scanners to the arsenal of tools at the airports to help out TSA. So what, are we going to train TSA agents to be radiologists now? Please... TSA is totally ineffective, because they don't know what they're looking for and don't have the right tools to detect today's hazardous materials. (Although the puffer machine guy says his device could have found this particular teste-bomb.) How about just selling off airport security to private companies, and getting someone in there who can really do the job without having people have to pass nakedly through dogs, wands, screaming TSA people, and 15 body scanners just to take a weekend visit to grandma's?

I think the TSA knows exactly what to look for. But political correctness prevents them from going after it. To comply with the laws of political correctness, they have to routinely pull a token granny out of the line and pat her down instead of staying focused on what they should be.

      Strangers on my flight,
      turbans they're packin'.
      Wonderin' if they might,
      plan a hijacking.
      They could pull a stunt,
      before this flight is through.

      Something's on their minds.
      I saw them mutter.
      What that in their hands?
      Looks like box cutters,
      I'm gonna kick some ass,
      if they make a move.

      Strangers on my flight.
      Two smelly people,
      and they're not talking right;
      and in a moment,
      I will grab base ball bat;
      and that will be that.
      Swing like Joe DiMaggio,
and rip them both a new a-hole.

And if they pick a fight,
      and try to screw us,
      I'll punch out their lights,
      just like Joe Louis.
      It would feel so right,
      for strangers on my flight.

      Ratta Tat Tat Tat,
      Budda Bing Bang Boom,
      Zooma Zooma Zoom.

    • The left are not only consumed by a hatred of America and the West, they also firmly believe that to acquiesce and avoid conflict at all cost represents 'peace'. But it was not always thus. For most of human history peace meant being able to plant your crops or herd your sheep without being set upon by marauders and murdered, with you last thought the knowledge that your wife and children were about to be carried off into slavery. It meant building a prosperous community in which people could follow their livelihoods withour molestation. It meant being able to travel the roads without being beaten and robbed by brigands. It was greatly prized, and it was very rare.

Peace is not just when war is over and the armies have gone home. Peace is the condition of being secure in one's property and person. Of being able to perform one's routine activities
without fear. We seem to have forgotten how rare and precious real peace is. The typical condition of mankind a couple of centuries ago was to live in brutality and fear. Men had to be armed and eternally vigilant to attain peace, and women and serfs could not hope for it without the protection of rough men ready to do violence on their behalf. But today, in the luxury of our current circumstances, the whole concept of peace has morphed into the concept of avoiding conflict at any cost. When bullies emerge to confront us, we are not to take up our cudgels against them. You must remain supine before your persecutor, allow his boot to remain firmly on your neck, and then you will have peace. You must rely on reason, on discourse to dissuade the assassin from his task. Understand his point of view, look at historical reasons for his behaviour, acknowledge your own culpability in creating the conditions that produced his outrage. You deserve all that you're getting, you must know that. Give him everything he wants, and then what follows will be 'peace'.

    • i just want to know: he wants to bring all of this change, which we all want, but why he doesn't he simply fire the ones around him who have fucked up??

like desiree rogers, nobody knows what could have happened if the Salahis were other folks with lethal intentions. she helped get them in.

so, i ask, what is wrong with simply getting rid of them as soon as they fuck up. we can't have everyone be perfect, but it's time we stop declaring things as not a big deal, especially in our time of progression.

    • Occupying these countries and destroying their families will just create even more terrorists and hate onto America. Hasn't anyone learned from growing up that violence just creates even more violence. It's like crime in our streets. Pull the troops and focus on protecting US, HERE, in the USA! Not in other countries where we are defenseless if something ever really did go down like another WW3.

    • Americans will feel "a certain shock" after reading Thursday's report , White House National Security Adviser James Jones told USA Today.

      Well I was.

The loudest (deafening, actually) part of Obama's remarks today on the war on the West is what he didn't say. Not once in Obama's self aggrandizement pap of a speech today on the testicular Muslim bomber Christmas bomber did the Islamist president ever mention jihad or Islam.

And that is who we are at war with.

Al qaeda is the enemy. More obfuscation and deception. It was a bureaucrat boiler plate

Imagine, if you will, during say, World War II,if the axis (enemy) press accounts of military operations refused to use the word America or United States.

      For example:

On June 6, 1944, nearly 160,000 Iowans, New Yorkers, Jersians, Alaskans, Texans and some black and white folks landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified Christian coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft filled with all kinds of people supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, Floridians had gained a foot-hold in Normandy.

Obama would only speak to "Al qaeda".

Al qaeda is devout Islam. Just as Hamas, Hezb'Allah, al-mujaroon, Armed Islamic Group (GIA, al-Jama'ah al-Islamiyah al-Musallaha, French Groupe Islamique Armé; Arabic الجماعة الإسلامية المسلّحة ), MILF, CAIR, ISNA, Fatah, Muslim Brotherhood, Chen Chens, Riyadus-Salikhiin, Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya, Armed Islamic Group of Algeria (redirect from Armed Islamic Groups), The Armed Islamic Group (GIA, al-Jama'ah al-Islamiyah al-Musallaha, Al-Jama’a al-Islamiyyah

      It is Islam.
