Just a couple of months after pleading guilty to perpetrating a hoax and getting 90 days in jail for his troubles, Balloon Boy's dad Richard Hearne has told media it wasn't a stunt after all.He maintains he admitted guilt along with his wife (who was given a 20-day prison sentence) to save his wife from being deported to Japan.
He told Larry King:
We had applied years ago for some paperwork. Things got fouled up," he said in the interview, due to air in the US on Friday.
"We had to reapply so she should have been an American citizen by now, but anyway. I can't break up my family."
He went on to say that at the time he thought his son Falcon was in the balloon.
"We had searched the house high and low," he said.
"I knew he was in the craft when I made the call... In my mind... there was no other place because I visualised him, I yelled at him to not go in."
Mr Heane notably didn't have Falcon sat next to him at the time while he said all of this. He famously came under suspicion during a TV interview with his son when Falcon told him "you said we were doing this for the show" when asked why he hid.
Asked by King why Falcon may have said that, Hearne replied:
"First off, let's take into consideration he's only been speaking English and just learned three and a half years prior to that. He's six years old during this interview," he said.
"Number two, I had gotten back into the house after... talking to the press out in front of my house. I had opened the garage door to get my family back inside away from these guys.
"I asked Falcon after that, I asked him: 'Why did you say that? What are you talking about?
"He said a Japanese cameraman... asked him to show him how he got into the attic for his TV show. That's why Falcon answered that."

He's going to say it was a hoax because otherwise he will be liable for all the money that was spent trying to rescue the balloon. Have you seen the family on Wife Swap? The Dad is pretty crazy!
I just hope that after all this has blown over (pun not intended) they can try and have a normal life as a family.
