Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball’s home run record by hitting 70 home runs in 1998.McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade.
“I wish I had never touched steroids,” McGwire said in a statement. “It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era.”
McGwire also used human growth hormone, a person close to McGwire said, speaking on condition of anonymity because McGwire didn’t include that detail in his statement.
McGwire’s decision to admit using steroids was prompted by his decision to become hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, his final big league team. Tony La Russa, McGwire’s manager in Oakland and St. Louis, has been among McGwire’s biggest supporters and thinks returning to the field can restore the former slugger’s reputation.
“I never knew when, but I always knew this day would come,” McGwire said. “It’s time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected.”
He became the second major baseball star in less than a year to admit using illegal steroids, following the New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez last February.
Others have been tainted but have denied knowingly using illegal drugs, including Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa and David Ortiz.

@MoonLoon if you would've read my comments GNC doesn't advocate the use of steroids period. No one should be using a prescription grade substance without the supervision of a physician who actually cares about their patient. Your power-lifter friends know that steroids can damage muscles too fast, so they stay away from them. The gains from steroid use are temporary, and they shouldn't be used for years on end without breaking from use. That is why they're used in cycles. Personally as woman, I don't want enlarged genitalia, so even though my testosterone is 43, when it should be 241-827, I won't use steroids. I take Zinc, and my doctor ordered B-12 injections. There are many natural ways to raise testosterone, like tribulus will raise it to 250.
It was nice having these conversations with you. I do know what I'm talking about with my own body and blood tests. Thank you and have a good day.

Sorry I am on Eastern Hemisphere time, so had to sleep while you were ranting. Steroids have no purpose in sports. None, whatso ever, unless prescribed by a physician for a specific medical problem. Retail clerks at GNC and so called "personal trainers", have no business advising the public on steroid usage. Dianabol came into usage in the 50's when you were a wet spot on someone's imagination. The damage that I have witnessed by steroid usage is unbelievable. Both men and women have fallen under the influence of this drug much to their regret. The first symptom (sp) is supreme arrogance in their opinions, secondary symptoms for women is increased aggression, a deeper voice, and and enlarged clitoris/ coinciding with increased sex drive. Men fall into a range of supreme over confidence and aggressiveness, beyond their natural state. I am close personal friends with 3 World Class (two World Champion Powerlifters) and can confidently state that you are clueless as to the dangers of steroid usage.

I'm listening to project961 in the ATL this morning, and the debate about steroids still seems to be going. There is something that people don't understand, and keep saying that baseball is now fake like wrestling (Shaf), and that they won't want to watch it.
Allow me to explain what happens:
your cells or red blood cells have a metabolism. Red blood cells form tissue, tissue forms muscle, and hormones in every person's body alter the red blood cells according to the plans in the brain. In essence, your body automatically genetically alters the cells in your body to repair itself and keep you well. Using steroids only enhances this process, it is only one component in muscle building, taking something naturally found in the body, and using a cycle to increase the muscle building process. Very much like how a woman's body changes within 6 wks. of getting pregnant, flooding the body with progesterone, testosterone or steroids work the same way to increase muscle mass.Working out helps activate the body's natural testosterone, to increase levels, and signal the body to produce more muscle. This firing or catalyst, testosterone is the signal to the brain. Your cells will only be able to process so much testosterone at a time, so juicing steroids can damage the body and brain/creating a situation of steroid overdose. Under the direction of a doctor, you are using testosterone to stimulate the body's cell metabolism to build muscle faster. Without monitoring doses and charting weight and mood changes over those 6-9 weeks, you're not allowing the body to use the testosterone properly but abusing the steroids.
Without working out, you are doing nothing but damaging your liver, as your body passes all of that stuff that isn't used out through the liver/then excretes it through your urine. You must work out in order to use steroids, and you must not abuse them. Giving yourself the wrong dose can produce overdose or death. Thinking you need more when your body will only use so much of the extra that you put in is not the right thinking. That is why they're designed to be used on a cycle, very much like a B12 injection once a week, allowing the body to use it properly. Taking too many steroids is kind of like drinking too much alcohol, but alcohol has estrogen in it. Moderation in drinking is not harmful, but the body develops tolerance, so steroids may not always work as well to achieve your goals.
Without training and disciplining the body, it won't use the natural testosterone in your body optimally, so this is especially important that you're working out and processing the testosterone taken in for controlled steroid use. Too much testosterone not utilized gives athletes a puffy swollen look, rather than a ripped and cut muscle definition. The same thing happens when you work out too hard and damage your muscles too much. That is why steroids must be used carefully and under the direction of a physician, as you can do more harm than good taking the wrong dose.

dont hate on Barry for having the intestinal fortitude to tell the biased reporters to eat the peanuts out of his shit and not care what light they portray him in.He should be judged by his abilities as a pro ballplayer not by his gullibility in trying to skin and grin to please the white reporters and masses It seems white people are more comfortable when a black player is soft with no opinion about things outside of baseball .or in other words just be glad we are even here it .seems most think we should talk softly and avert our eyes when in the presence of other whites .Newsbreak... we are here we have opinions and we will voice them whenever and whereever we deem appropriate. regardless of the consequences. @MoonLoon Well I don't. I don't see where you have any educational or experiential knowledge that you're bringing to the debate, and I merely meant to support the arguments for and against steroids by a comparison to the controversy over meth. @MoonLoon I'm actually female, and even though my testosterone is low, I don't think I'll opt to use a testosterone prescription injection but stick with my Zinc tablets. I have a phobia of needles, and I hated it when my doctor prescribed me a B-12 injection to help with hormonal imbalance. I don't really look at steroid use as cheating, but I do look at it as dangerous to an athlete when it's not used wisely. Steroids are never meant to replace working out and strength training, or muscle resistance training. It's merely one component in all of that which can help if used in moderation or can kill when taken over the edge.

@MoonLoon correct it was used by Japanese fighter pilots to stay awake, and I wouldn't doubt that it has some sort of truth serum like properties. Anything at strong doses can be lethal, as 6,000 people died last year from prescription pill abuse, unlike the 1.5 million current users of meth. People are more likely to overdose on pills, because they digest in the stomach, as the body will reject large quantities of meth and force the body to throw it up, as it creates a serious chemical reaction when hitting the stomach acid:
remember the Brian Nichols incredible hulk-like rampage? He swallowed the drug. Smoking the drug is much like a stronger dose of dopamine that you would get instead of smoking a cigarette, when you're only going to get 1-2mg of dopamine in the brain from a cigarette, but with meth you get 1250mg. Which is why ingestion is instantly toxic and has psychotic effects of even a small amount. The potency and effects of meth, that produces so much more dopamine varies with how it is processed, so it's not like a measurable amount that you know that would come from cigarettes. There are all different kinds of meth, but since they aren't legally regulated, there's no way to standardize it, like cigarettes contain a certain amount of nicotine, which in turn, produces a certain amount of dopamine in the brain.
Without regulation, some grades of meth are toxic, while others are cut.

@MoonLoon GNC doesn't advocate steroids, because they're prescription grade. If you want testosterone, you can easily get more of it from Zinc, a very cheap and natural source. Your body will only be able to use the extra testosterone effectively if you work out, and if you don't work out, then all you're doing is straining your liver.
I think you need to do a little more research rather than pop off about something like this, as steroids do improve performance, but they are banned as the body can become addicted to them and produce undesired side effects. This is more for the safety of the individual athlete, rather than the integrity of baseball. There is reason to repeal the ban on steroids, as long as people are under the care of a sports medicine expert, and then there are reasons to keep the ban, as in the case of Chris Benoit's incompetent doctor who exploited him as an athlete and killed him. Chris Benoit was not a stupid person, if he knew that steroids would've altered his brain chemistry so quickly he wouldn't have taken them, and only when he was at the end of his rope was it then he realized that steroids had taken over his life.
Anything can be an idol, and if we worship steroids as the road to the pinnacle of sports performance, nothing could be a greater lie. Steroids won't help you actually build true muscle mass, it is a gimmick for quick strength. Look at Lex Luger, if he thought that he'd have ended up at the Sheperd Spine Center for what it did to his back, he wouldn't have done it. Anything taken to an extreme can be injurious, especially steroids. There are people like McGwire who have used them, and they are not crippled or dead.
Consider why that is, and let's move on.... you should really do some more research until you make assumptions MoonLoon.

The use of methamphetamines hasn't been fully investigated as an experimental sports medicine. Like steroids, it does have some enhancing properties, gives you more energy and works like a fat blaster. It does work as an appetite suppressant, but moderate use will not stop a person from eating sensibly. Many people who are dopamine deficient, like a diabetic is insulin deficient, may feel drawn to this for the amount of dopamine that loads quickly into the body.
It does a lot of free radical damage to the brain and the muscles, which accelerates the process that would normally occur during working out or stressful situations. Meth can cause you to bleed faster, if you were injured, but when cessation occurs, the chemicals work to harden the muscles like they were stone.
This is very effective for someone who is a boxer or street fighter, as no amount of working out can prepare you for repeated body shots and pummeling. Yet again, when you see the amount of people who are obese, are the consequences of moderate use that bad?
We really don't know, as they haven't been accurately documented or proven, we just now that meth abuse is readily apparent in the free radical damage of the teeth and brain/in neglecting care of the body and mind, putting the drug use above other functions like eating, as the dopamine taken in surpasses the dopamine that you get from food. Some people who are deficient in dopamine, who use meth, it doesn't really effect them in a negative way, as someone who has dopamine stored already, that makes them manic instead of balanced.

Let me dispel a common myth about steroids that maybe a lot of those commenting here don't seem to understand: STEROIDS TECHNICALLY DO NOT MAKE YOU STRONGER! I worked for GNC, and I will tell you that we didn't advocate steroid injections, as they give you the appearance of being stronger, rather than possessing muscle strength. For example, it loads the muscle with water, so you can really injure yourself taking them. We did however, sell creatine, which does the same thing but isn't prescription strength like steroids. We did sell human growth hormone, which enhances the body's ability to repair the muscle damage from working and would be most effective in pairing it with steroids and hgh isn't illegal. Steroids without working out and ridding the body of what you don't use/or overusing steroids, called juicing, not a set of monitored injections will cause other problems, especially in relation to altering brain chemistry. Think ROID RAGE.... and very likely induce a psychotic episode if a toxic dose is juiced into the system. Your body will only process so much of the chemicals that you put into your body.
Please keep in mind that your body decides what is too much, not you or a doctor, and your body will do anything to restore itself to a natural balance.

The reason McGwire didn't come forward is because of the statute of limitations. He broke the record in 1998, so for 7 years he can be legally prosecuted if that was pursued, and they waited until 2005 to bring him up on charges. It has now been 5yrs., which is equivalent to serving a 20yr. sentence for a drug charge. You have to possess it in order to consume it, and McGwire didn't want to admit to being a steroid consumer, as his supplier could be charged with crimes, especially if he doesn't have a license to dispense drugs. Yet the state would have to decide to press charges and now that the time is up to pursue the matter, legally, they can't touch him or the supplier unless they have financial records of some sort of dealing steroids in mass quantities and profiting off of it.
We SHOULD acknowledge that the law isn't conducive to honesty, and it punishes you for telling the truth.
I, of all people, know firsthand the stigma of controversial drugs and how the law is outdated and costing of us millions upon billions of dollars housing 85% of the jail population for drug offenses, and it is a money racket for the judicial and law enforcement system. The FDA will have to step in and start regulating illegal drugs, as illegal drugs are starting to be chemically altered in ways never seen. In 2006, a blend of heroin and meth hit the street, like "methopium", but people thought that they were buying meth only. Now they're nursing an addiction unmatched to heroin or meth alone, and this was perpetrated by Al Qaida to take over the money from Mexican cartels in the illegal drug market, in order to have the money to acquire/accomplish their nuclear weapons agenda.
Drugs are a big business, and prescription pills have taken over the illegal drug market, as derivatives of poppy plants. We have to wake up to the fact that we're spending HUGE amounts of money on drugs and giving these people money to purchase weapons when we're not sure of the source of poppy, synthesized opium/heroin, or meth. Many people with questionable ties/moderates who fund terrorism are investors in prescription drugs and pharmacies.

No one can deny the successes of Canseco and McGwire, or the tragic deaths like Benoit in the sports world, and should we appeal their use/how do we hold doctors accountable?
My grandmother had to take steroids for her polymyalga, and she died from the debilitating consequences/side effects. There are illegal drugs that mimic the effects of steroids: methamphetamine, for example used to be a legal asthma treatment and used by the Japanese. 1.5 million people use it, and there a short-term gains, but very much the same consequences of abusing the drug like abusing steroids. I really thought that McGwire would say that he was using it as an experimental sports medicine, which is why he got by the inquiry when he was tested for steroids, as meth passes through your system clearly.
Truly, knowing that the long-term effects of certain drugs or abuse of using the drug is high, how do we have accountability without honesty? He felt like he had to lie to protect his career, because drug laws are antiquated. I can't fault him there! The laws haven't caught up with the science, and neither have probation officers or courts, and they look at you like you're evil for being more educated than they are and if you dare point it out, then you're a criminal because they're ignorant.
No, the only thing criminal about it is if it is abused, or if doctors do not monitor or over-medicate, there's nothing criminal beyond that.

When Barry Bonds was implicated everyone wanted to act as if he was scarface. now that mcgwire has come clean everyone wants to make it a bump in the road. go back and review all of the reports on bonds. each one was written in a bad light, defaming his character, abilities, and intentions yet just this evening all of the sportswriters who have a hall of fame vote were busy giving interviews softening their stance that mere days ago was dead set against voting for anyone who had anything to do with steroids. Mark my words, Mcgwire WILL make the hall of fame for the same reason that people of color were initally were not allowed to even play the game. RACE...Baseball is the last frontier as far as professional sports goes..it is the last sport that white people feel comfortable supporting...seeing as how it is the last sport that is majority white. Thanks to Tiger Woods. Where is all the outrage? why are there not multiple camera crews parked on Mcgwire's lawn? why is this news being treated as a blip on the steroid hunt radar? Why is Barry bonds not able to play baseball? Mcgwire has been accepted back into the fold why not bonds? If any team tries to employ Bonds in any capacity there would be instant outrage. By admitting to his misdeeds Mcgwire is only paving the way for his eventual acceptance to the hall of fame. Hey white america....god dont like ugly.

If Bond's had not been a major asshole most of his career he may have garnered some support from the media. Plus, he is a major liar, allowing his personal trainer and childhood friend to take the fall.

While I agree with your general assertions about race and baseball, I wanted to point out that blacks began playing organized baseball at roughly the same time as whites and that blacks had an arguably more competitive league during different parts of the segregationist eras. I went to Pittsburgh to see 2 Pittsburgh-Nationals baseball games last year. I was amazed by all the white people sporting hats for the Pittsburg(h) Grays.

I'm not a big baseball fan and I really not trying to be rude but...... so if you say "Now america will show its true racist colors" are you saying that if he doesn't get in to the hall of fame america isn't as racist as you thought? Also there are other differences between Bonds and McGwire than race......Like Bonds was a total dick to everyone. You seem pretty knowledgeable on baseball, way more than me, so you know this. I live in SF and even his fans new he was a dick; to the press, to his teammates, he wouldn't give his autograph to little kids unless they paid. Bonds might not be working on baseball cuz no one can work with the guy. "why is this news being treated as a blip on the steroid hunt radar?" I don't think it is. First of all there are over 50 comments on CURRENT. That is huge for a sports story for CURRENT readers. Second, some of the hall of fame voters, you were right, are even in to him more with his admission but others still won't vote or out right quit the whole process in disgust.

Bullshit, Barry Bonds is treated the way he is because he's an asshole and he would never admit anything that we already know he did. If it was Ken Griffey Jr. that broke that record, every fan in America would have stood and cheered him on, myself included, Junior is a class guy. Barry is a shit. Race has nothing to do with it.

Mark, what a horrible role model you've become, not only to kids who dreamed of being like you but as an image for America as a whole. Sums it up pretty nicely.

Yes we all knew it but my favorite part is that he says he regrets it. Damn i sure do regret shattering the home run record and being the talk of the entire US for 2 consecutive years. The only thing he regrets is that Barry Bonds say the success he had on the sauce and jumped on board and beat him at his own game. I guarantee if he still held the record he wouldn't have said anything.

So, I guess someone DOES care about getting into the Hall of Fame! Whatever, I hope the writers see through his crap and snub the crap out of him.
Mark McGwire = douche.

If they snub him, they better remember to snub A-Rod too. If they let A-Rod in and not Big Mac, they are total hypocrites.
