SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- The pride of a Seminole County High School could be difficult to erase. The ram representing Lake Mary High School is too similar to a recognizable logo; the ram selling Dodge trucks.

The big change comes after attorneys for Chrysler met with school district lawyers. It doesn't mean Lake Mary can't be the Rams, it means they can't use the same logo.

A source tipped off WFTV about the dispute.

It's been nearly a year and a half that the school has been using the specific image in question. However, the parent company for Dodge Ram, famous for the logo, has told the school to immediately stop using mascot logos which are most everywhere on the campus.

From the cheers at football games to the impressive bronze statue at the main entrance, the ram's imagery is all over Lake Mary High School.

But now, a version of the school logo which appears everywhere will be phased out because of a striking similarity to the Dodge logo.

“They're not competing with Ram even in the same industry. So I don't see how it really applies. I think it's a joke,” taxpayer Bill Cashman said.

“If we put it to my perspective, I think that, yeah, they're kind of taking it a little bit overboard,” student Jesus Figueroa said.

Figueroa is a senior on the school's track team. He bought new uniforms that he says is covered in the soon-to-be obsolete logo.

A Chrysler spokesman says there's no crackdown on use of the image, this is just normal brand management.

But Brian Clarke remembers the $6.6 billion in government financing that kept the same auto company in business last summer.

“Wasn't it taxpayers who less than a year ago saved their behinds? So Detroit is now coming after a high school in Florida?” taxpayer Brian Clarke said.

Chrysler can't take away the ram altogether, it will still be the school's mascot.

Officials might revert back to an older, more shadowy version. It's not clear yet how much it might cost the district to phase out the logo or how quickly the transition will happen.

Because of the holiday, that Chrysler spokesman couldn’t be reached to tell WFTV how Lake Mary High School's Ram mascot even made it onto their corporate radar.

    • It is sad to see how corporations have taking over our country....making a hihg school to pay to remove a logo that it is not even in the same industry is a crime...But they hide behing their corporate lawyers and ignore the real world:(
