Jon Stewart Questions John Yoo, Author Of 'Crisis and Command', On Legality Of Torture (VIDEO)

Jon Stewart's interview with Bush's former Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Yoo, about his book "Crisis and Command" was an uncomfortable one. It was a fascinating fencing match between the two: Stewart seemed uncharacteristically stymied, while Yoo retreated into legal hairsplitting. Stewart's argument was that Bush had been asking his Attorney General's staff for a new definition of torture, one that gave the government broader powers in recruiting methods for questioning suspected terrorists. Yoo countered that he was simply interpreting treaties and the Constitution to show the legal extent to which the American government could go in pressing suspected terrorists for answers. The interview that aired last night was edited down, but the entire piece is now available online.

    • Extreme physical torture does not work! Period, psychological torture and warfare are much more effective. I am tired of liberals, determining the proper way to conduct warfare. I have been in the military my entire adult life....seen, done and witness things that I am ashamed of. I have sinned against God and humanity to protect my family, love ones and our way of life. Yes, Iraq was a mistake and we were lied to by the Bush Administration and war is horrible. Death and murder is horrible but don't lie or fool yourself into thinking that true evil does not exist. Yuu was a disgrace, lying, double talking and refusing to take responsibility. I don't have the answers, but either American needs to be an isolationist country or leave us alone and allow us to do our job. I want to go home someday...........thanks for reading my rants....B

    • John Yoo inspires homicidal rage in me. He's allowed to teach. I disagree with John Stewart. Mr. Yoo doesn't deserve respect. Every answer he "found" was yes. He hides behind a skein of courtesy as all truly evil men do. He deserves to have to watch the children in his family have their testicles crushed in front of them as he said would be legal for the president to authorize.

    • I think Jon realized without thinking about it that, if Yuu was tasked with determining what did NOT constitute torture, you have to get around to defining what IS torture - Yuu was trying to point out that other courts have already done that (or attempted to) - Yuu had to figure out how much wiggle room Bush/the U.S. had w/in already established case law on what types of acts constitute torture - they really just got caught up in semantics and Yuu didn't want to take responsibility for defining torture (which he didn't - the courts did)
