And you know, Christy, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it, they were under the heel of the French, uh, you know, Napoleon the third and whatever, and they got together and swore a pact to the devil, they said, we will serve you, if you get us free from the Prince, true story. And so the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal.' And they kicked the French out, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free, and ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other, desperately poor. . . the Island of Hispaniola is one island cut down the middle. On the one side is Haiti, on the other side is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is, is, prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty, same Islands, uh, they need to have, and we need to pray for them, a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy, I'm optimistic something good may come, but right now we're helping the suffering people, and the suffering is unimaginable.

Nicely done. And yes, the images pouring into CNN are horrifying. I cannot even begin to imagine all the pain and suffering, the fear, the loss of loved ones, those missing others, and so much more. So many bodies lying next to injured people. The voices of those still trapped, but mercifully (?) alive. The parents who lost their children. The children who lost their parents.
This has been haunting me, as it will for weeks and months to come, I know.

I know, wasn't that the most obnoxious thing ever? When ever my father injects "true story" into a anecdote, it is usually a mega lie. I thought of my father when I heard this.

Nephwrack,
"Words fail you ? Then let me try and help you out buddy !To me Pat Robertson personifies Satan in the Flesh, and he's really angry that the Haitian government and their people have never bowed down to the United States of America. American people cannot go down to Haiti and buy up land, unlike the way they do in other islands in the Caribbeans. That's probably why Haitian refugees are turned away, even in the ocean in deadly tides, when they try and come to America. The "Wet foot/Dry foot policy" refers to anybody and everybody than can reach American soil, EXCEPT HAITIANS. Haitians are sent back, even if they make it to land. Nobody in the world helps the people of Haiti, but our government will send young men half way around the world to die, in the name of God, for profit, while people less than 100 miles of the coast of Florida are living in the worst conditions on the planet. Bullshit.
Pat Robertson, as much as anybody on this planet, can go to hell. God damn him.

Wait and see. I hear the world bank is giving money to Haiti. Historically the bank, backed by the US, makes countries privatize their social programs. I'm fully expecting that the homes/land of the poor will be leveled and they will make it into a tourist destination, or some other private enterprise. Profiteers exploit shocks like this for profit. Read Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" for historical context of this sort of thing happening many, many times, pushed by the United States and Milton Freidman economics.

Link to quick message from Naomi Klein, including a quote from the Heritage Foundation:
"In addition to providing immediate humanitarian assistance, the U.S. response to the tragic earthquake in Haiti earthquake offers opportunities to re-shape Haiti’s long-dysfunctional government and economy as well as to improve the public image of the United States in the region."

I did not know that U.S. citizens cannot buy land in Haiti, can Haitians buy land in the U.S.? They seem willing to accept various forms of aid, yet restrict land ownership? I do not not follow this line of reasoning.

Hi. Your happy neighborhood atheist here. I am going to give all the Christians a pass on this one. Pat Robertson is an terrible embarrassment and I know that he does not speak for most of you. In honor of the fact that he is such an asshole, I am going to refrain from making fun of religion today while you religious folk reflect on the self appointed spoke models of your chosen superstition.

Though I completely agree with this man being a complete fool, your still flattering yourself based on a widely accepted stereotype. Being religious doesn't always mean you belong to an organized mess of idiots blindly following whatever they deem as morally acceptable to be a standard with which to live our lives. A select few of us are smart enough to not let unrealistic and "hopeful" beliefs invade valid logical thinking and open minded reason. As unpopular as spirituality is here, I don't think grouping theists together as means to fuel jokes is the least bit mature. And honestly did you think parading your personal beliefs around while mixing in Spider-Man quotations was funny?

I certainly don't have any objection to you making fun of religion, EdJoy. God knows (literally) religion deserves it. My objection is to stereotyping -- making the absurd claim that all -- or even most -- Christians are intolerant, narrow-minded wingnuts like Mr. Robertson simply because he claims to be Christian and to represent Christians. I certainly never gave him permission to represent me and find his views to be repugnant to the point of making me physically ill to read them.
Christians as a whole are no more like the worst of us than any other group -- race, sex, ethnicity, etc -- is like the worst of their number. What boggles my mind is that people who think that stereotyping based on religion is somehow different than stereotyping based on these other categories don't realize that they are bigots...the definition is pretty clear...
I am glad that you are not among their number 'cause I think you are one of the smartest, funniest people on this site, and I look forward each evening to getting online just to see what witty mischief you have been up to since I last read your stuff...

Ed, I wholeheartedly agree. It's saddening that the only Christians who make it in the media HAVE to be the insane ones.
@cztheday I think a huge problem nonreligious folks find with religion is that, as shown in the video, the world thinks its terrible when a person is racist or sexist, but when a person is also religious, that makes it perfectly fine because it is their beliefs and the will of their personal god. I find that people stereotyping religion is a direct response to religion overruling common sense for some people (ex. Condoms spread HIV, the catholic church defending incest etc.)

EdJoyProductions:
No argument here on that point, PureEm. The various religions are chock full of people who twist the underlying message into themes that would be unrecognizable to, for example, Jesus (assuming for the moment he existed) because they have agendas of their own and want to be able to "cite back" as we say in the law to some source greater than themselves as justification for their hatred, intolerance, narrow-mindedness, etc.
At the same time, some of the finest people I know are Christians, Muslims, etc. They tend, however, to take that whole humility thing a good deal more seriously than does Mr. Robertson...

Thanks CZ. Sometimes I just like to stir the pot a little for the defense arguments. ;)
As with Jerry Faldwell, Orel Roberts, and all of the other phony baloney Christian representatives of the airways, I really am very much aware that many people of faith see through the charade.
I am uplifted to see the backlash against Pat the Rat's ridiculous assertion. Doesn't he have handlers or did his god say it was okay to make an ass of himself?
@William, sweetie, I was not flattering myself (even though I am totally awesome), I even stated he was a self-proclaimed spokeperson. I actually do not blame the whole Christian faith for the stupidity and insensitivity of one representative. I reserve most of my criticism for actual religiously observed practices that I think are a detriment to humanity.
It was not a Spiderman quotation (that would be "friendly neighborhood"), but now I know why it popped into my head. Thanks.
As for "parading my personal beliefs", I think that is pretty much the point of this forum. We all have personal beliefs and we all like to share.
