for all of the members who still rely on what used to be called the "old testament', now just 'scriptures', or the bible...whatever. for your piece of mind, there is a cool story in there about a guy named Noah, who also had a flood situation...after which he was told by a higher power that he would never destroy the planet again by water. so relax, believers.

I want to thank everyone that commented on this post. It is an interesting topic: Is God Responsible for Natural Disasters?
It seems that one's faith in either opinion determines the strength of the argument.
As a person that believes in discourse, I can only hope we find enough common ground to eradicate the pain and suffering which is so prevalent around the world.

Unimatrix, unimatrix you say, bitterly,// There is no god. Give up your superstitious non-sense and join the 21st century.// God or not, you need saved, my brother. Einstein proved the existence of God last century with E=MC2, but I don't expect you to understand how. Many scientists now believe in God due to 21st century research into the deepest parts of the atom. JFGI. The information is out there if you don't hide from it.

HomieCow is here and explained it wonderfully to me. It's sort of like ying and yang. Think of it like this God and Satan have a contract with each other. God allows Satan to tempt us but we have free will to make the decisions. One failure doesn't doom us to a life with Satan, that is what Jesus was for, to sacrifice so that we could have forgiveness if truly desired in the heart. God wants us also to live one way but doesn't force us either just like Satan, this keeps a balance of power, positive and negative, if you will. Would it be that the majority should pick the Godly life, the planet would be much better, however, Satan is a master of deception and a person must be careful not to be fooled or enticed.

He did that to test us. With no goal, no challenge to attain cleanliness or the desire to live a righteous life, things would get a little boring down here and nobody would earn their place in eternity. Temptations, Biblically, weed out those who can resist and those who can't. Mistakes are allowed but it's those that choose to make choosing temptation a lifestyle, they get to stay with Satan.

The Bible never says God controls anything down here. Animals die every day, do we mock God over that? The Pat Robertson types aren't true Christians anyway, they use the Bible to manipulate people into making them wealthy. No true Christian needs a Biblical way to understand natural disaster, free will applies to everything on the planet. Atheists make a fool of themselves when they mock Christianity without an in depth understanding of it. Same goes for Christianity and atheism. A belief system of any kind is good for humans, that's why some on this site without that seem so bitter all the time. Atheism is also a belief system and the belief doesn't necessarily ruin the person just as Christianity doesn't ruin the person. Belief systems aren't meant to be argued about, they are just that a system of beliefs. It's wrong for any side to belittle the other or dismiss them. We all have a place here and diversity helps us grow and evolve. Some of you Atheists mock Christians by using what kind of a merciful God is that? Yet, the same Atheists believe the planet to be overpopulated. If God prevented all death, think of the problem we'd have. Life and death, accidents and victories are all a part of this planet and all make us better in the long run.

I would never mock God. However, Job 1:6, 1:9, 1:12 and 2:6 have haunted me since my childhood. Why does God grant dominion over the Godly to Satan?

It is not my original idea. However, it is a little understand principle of Biblical verse. Rarely, discussed for fear of challenging the power of the Almighty. Yet, if true, it could explain much of the misery suffered by mankind and would relieve God of a responsibility for the pain and suffering of mankind. Not much of a recommendation for God's mercy, is it?

Dirtman, while I do believe in God, your story and explanation do ring true. God is used as a crutch and a place to put blame when it should rest entirely in our hands or the hands of nature.

I thought that Satan rules the Earth until the second coming and final victory. Satan offered Jesus dominion over the Earth for his bended knee. How can Satan offer something that he does not have dominion over? Unless, he was lying?

I can say that during my life there have been a number of peculiarities that could only be explained by the presence of a supernatural force. However, this 'entity' that is referred to as 'God' doesn't seem to be connected to anything in my life. I had worked for a major corporation that two classes of employees. Union employees were paid by the hour were paid less and given manual work. Salary employees were paid more, given better benefits and worked in plush offices. One day there was a strong earthquake and everyone was told to go home. The union employees were temporarily laid off and not given pay regardless of whether they were at work or not. Salary employees, the company's 'chosen ones', were allowed to code their time under "Acts of God" and given pay even if they were not at work.
There is something evil about mankind's point of view. As far as I'm concerned it is personal whether I believe in God or not, but for the most part mankind uses God to account for their most shameful acts.

Explaining away natural occurances like earthquakes by using mythical means is pre-rational and kind of childish. Earthquakes occurred long before any creature appeared on earth and will occur long after we are gone. If anything, man gets in the way of nature, not the other way around.
I live in Japan, and have experienced earthquakes, they are not fun but the Japanese have learned to build and rebuild and to live with their occurances.

Why is this deal with “Christians” blaming every natural disaster on God? Also, what do you mean “God” is in charge of everything. I am not Christian at least not by your standards. I am Irish Catholic and proud to be one. I have a relationship with God, usually I only take to him when I am getting my ass shot off or terrified for some reason. I feel his presences sometimes but I don’t know if this is just my own self-conscience giving me strength or some Higher Being. I think most members of the U.S. Military are religious in some way which is a bit ironic cause we are the biggest bunch of sinning bastards there are………….God, had nothing to do with Haiti…….Get over it!....but, also why does everyone on Current feel the need to sleep the people who do believe in God and go out of their way to show just how cool they are with they atheist views…….B

North American wood frame structures would stand up better because wood is flexible and can absorb quite a bit if energy. This country is all constructed mortar made of mud.

Well in order to be Christian you have to assume that God is in control of every single event that takes place on this earth, otherwise he's not God.
You may not think natural disasters are spiritual, but i do believe that God is in control.
We may not know the reasoning, but we can be sure that God will work it out for eventual good.

For good?! what good has ever come of any natural disaster? Or are they all leading up to one single rectify event?
If "God" is really, natural disasters only prove that he/she/it is a bitter slag.

ibrake4rappers13:
There has never been and never will be an act of God that causes death and destruction! If there was, then that would quite simply make God a murderer and a hypocrite. The first of the Christian "Ten Commandments," is "thou shalt not kill." Simple logic makes this quite clear.
Essentially, we live on a rock that can be and quite often is very hostile. There are a series of events that are going to take place whether we are here or not. This is just the nature of the planet we call earth. The universe is full of many examples of a constant changing environment. Katrina was not an act of God to punish or smite the sinners, gays, or black people that lived there. Otherwise, God would have had to chase down and kill any that traveled away from that location just prior to the hurricane. The thought of this is ludicrous. Essentially, if you live in a place that is below sea level and remain there during a category 5 hurricane you will probably be killed and if not that, you will most certainly get wet and wind torn. Just common sense.
Any disaster whether it is natural or otherwise gives fellow human beings the opportunity to step up and do the Christ like thing and help each other. In Christ's teachings, he stated that we are to help the sick, the poor, afflicted and the needy which seems to be in line with the God I choose to know and believe in.
The televangelist Pat Robertson from the Christian Broadcasting Network, has stated that Haiti is being punished because they made a deal with the devil to get their freedom from the French back some time ago. This is what I have to say to that:
I must say that I am totally fascinated with Pat Robertson! He is truly a very special and gifted soul. There are not many people that can actually wear a toupee on their ass and walk upright on their hands for most of their life as he has. He is seriously a rare but fascinating phenomenon. Not only can he walk on his hands but he has somehow managed to teach his ass to speak fluent gibberish and enthrall literally thousands.
A man of God? I think not!!! I believe if someone wanted to make a deal with the devil, Pat Robertson would be the ideal contact point. The God he worships is the same God that spreads hatred, malice, discontent, bigotry, and racial discrimination around the globe. If Pat is in fact a true representation of what it means to be a Christian, then I say release the lions or give him his sword so that he may fall upon it.
What a vile, ill-informed, out of touch and insensitive bastard. PATHETIC!!!

While I can't agree with this statement, I respect your right to believe.
Personally, I can't willingly however hand over all responsibility for life to God. I fundamentally believe the concepts of choice and society; hopefully both will come together to help these people in their grave time of need.
