First gay pageant in China canceled by police

Before the closure, the pageant was being reported as a break through for China, since the show would have been a step towards preventing discrimination against homosexuality in the country.

"One contestant, Jay, 29 and from the northern port city of Tianjin, told The Times: “I’m rather disappointed. I never expected they would cancel. It was going to start in a few minutes.”

Police claim the closure was due to there being no approval for a stage show. However the organisers did suspect that with too much media attention the police would shut them down.

"Organisers hope to avoid problems by keeping Mr Gay China low-key and did not invite mainstream Chinese-language media.

"Officials could show up and say 'your fire hydrant is in the wrong place," said Zhang. "It is still a sensitive issue."
