864,000 pounds of US ground beef recalled

Some 864,000 pounds (390 tonnes) of ground beef produced by a California meat packer is being recalled for fear of potentially deadly E.coli bacterium tainting, U.S. officials said on Monday.

The beef was produced by Huntington Meat Packing Inc of Montebello, California, and shipped mainly to California outlets, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food safety arm said.

The problem was discovered during an inspection by the Food Safety and Inspection Service, which said it had received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of the recalled products.

      Whoever said that you're more likely to get struck by a lightening than you are to get sick from e.coli bacteria was wrong when it comes to meat. E.coli alone isn't the only factor in meat that makes you sick, matter of fact, as you know, 76 million cases of illness are reported every year, 300,000 are hospitalized and 5,000 die every year versus the:

      "It is estimated that nearly 2000 people a year get hit by lightning around the world, and of these it is believed that between 25 - 33 percent of people die..." which makes 660 deaths a year.

      Even if the number would be higher, this analogy above is wrong:
      Getting hit by a lightening, while you walk or play golf is beyond your control, eating unsafe meat is your choice.
      When it comes to car accidents, driving drunk or recklessly is a choice you make just as the one of eating unsafe meat. The latter just happens to kill less people. Is this statistic supposed to justify our bad choices or make us feel safe?

      Animals lead miserable lives, and are fed diets of high-pesticide, GMO food, ridden with hormones, steroids and antibiotics.
      Meat production requires a lot of land and a lot of water causing desertification, water contamination, deforestation, animal species extinction and the killing of indigenous people.

      "Cattle ranching is overwhelmingly the biggest driver of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon: the fate of nearly 80 percent of cleared rainforest land is to serve as forage for livestock. Since 2006 more than 38,600 square miles has been cleared for pasture, bringing the total area occupied by cattle ranches in the Brazilian Amazon to 214,000 square miles, an open space larger than France."

    • It seems interesting that the Veg only folks only show up when a meat scare arrives and they never ever mention recalled veg due to similar bacteria recall! Unless you are fully self sufficient.....and I mean fully....you are always at risk.

    • I forget who said that you're more likely to get struck by lightening than you are to get sick from e. coli bacteria. And as cooking meat fully kills e. coli and virtually eliminates your chances of getting sick from e. coli bacteria, I'd say there's less to worry about when eating beef than there is in driving a car or going golfing.

      Please do not forget that e. coli contamination effects vegetable foods like spinach, including organic spinach for you die hard anti-meat eaters. Some of you may try hard to not realize this.

      I'm not going to give any advice about preventing illness due to eating raw vegetables contaminated with e. coli, but if you are eating beef then do yourself a favor and virtually eliminate your chances of getting sick by fully cooking it before you eat it.

      There are a lot of appliances on the market today that can cook meat. Go find one and join the others who enjoy the safe consumption of fully cooked meat.

      I know a lot of you have a very anti-meat sentiment, but come on, you're making yourselves look like fools (except to others like yourselves) by using this article to bitch and to pitch your anti-meat dogma.

      As for me, I like my burgers and steaks well done. I am also proficient in 21st century methods of kitchen sanitation. For those reasons, added to the fact that e. coli contamination is indeed rare (unlike how I cook my beef), I feel I have nothing to fear when I enjoy beef.

    • I stopped eating meat a few months ago ... boy, am I glad. By eating a balanced diet with enough grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, there's no reason to expose yourself to these types of dangers.

      Think about it. Industrial meat offers us rotting flesh, raised under "only G-d knows what" kind of conditions, stored who-knows-where, in what kind of temperature, given which drugs/hormones/antibiotics? Doesn't that scare you?

      OK, as for the omnivore issue ... maybe it's the industry and not the meat? Want to eat healthy and safe meat? Raise it yourself, humanely, clean and respectfully. I don't think the meat industry really cares how healthy the meat is for you. It's a business!

      You spelled vegetarian wrong, and you have to elaborate on that statement. Did they say it was from a nutrient deficiency? I have a headache, and I drank some soy milk today, but that doesn't mean soy milk is causing my headache.

      There are many causes of anemia. I can only think of two diet based causes: Lack of vitamins (being a vegetarian, this is highly unlikely), and low iron (more likely than the former, but still pretty unlikely given the fish part and assuming he eats spinach, beans, lentils or things a vegetarian usually eats).

    • If you don't think beef is safe, then DON'T EAT IT. Don't log on to hope there's a story about a recall so you can talk about how we're dying from red meat. Just don't eat it. If we weren't supposed to eat meat, we wouldn't have Canine teeth. We're omnivores. Stop complaining.

      You are right when you say that it's a small amount to be recalled compared to the one being produced.
      But when that 0.003 % actually kills a few people and one of them happens to be your child would you still take this statistic as an acceptable reality?
      I would think twice about what I am eating and what I am feeding to my children.

    • Factory meat is hardly ever inspected . Does this mean they are stepping up inspections ? Though , I do not recall the last time I ate beef , I am very glad they actually caught it before anyone died . Unlike the peanut butter one , the dairy one , the tomato one ....... factory food is not good for so many reasons .

      I don't really like the response to articles like these. People hear about e.coli and their first response is to freak out. And I don't like it when people freak out and go into mass hysteria mode.

      Quite recently, a few years ago, there was an e.coli scare surrounding alfalfa sprouts. And there was also one with spinach. And people just started freaking out about it. Stores in my area stopped carrying those products altogether. I'm sure the demand for those products decreased as a result of the hysteria.

    • It doesn't seem to get to the masses of people that Red meat is the cause of colon cancer and too these animals are no different that humans, they can get then same kind of cancers and diseases as humans and if you ever watched the TV show Diagnosis unknown from human medical aspect, how do you think the Dept of Agriculture treats a diagnosis unknown in animals? When I was growing up, Salmonella and Botulism and E-Coli were virtually unknown except in the Bio Chemistry books, but corporate farming for corporate profits have made many short cuts and found ways to recycle many of their products and re-enter them back into consumer consumption to save money and take care of their share holders and what if a few of their share holders should die from these diseases, good riddance.

      Red meat is not "the" cause of colon cancer. It may be a contributing factor, but that's not to say that eating red meat will give you colon cancer, or that anyone who has colon cancer got it because they ate red meat.

      add acorn fattened pigs & corn feed deer and turkey

      and I don't feel bad about the Ca Depression portions of good beef(same price as the bison farm on HW20)

      the fishing once a week per uncle sam for the women and children that's once a month and that's Medical portions if you want to live ...

    • We humans don't really give a damn about human life , why should we care about a couple of thousand dumb animals. I know of a good way to dispose of them. Give this 864,00 popunds of ground beef to Goldman Sachs and let them repackage for food to the third world countries and to the terrorist organizations. They can wrap it up in paper from the Federal Reserve and sell it as special form of derivatives and junk bonds and then take out special insurance in the cayman islands to make sure that they are covered from both sides. Incidently have you ever noticed the location of the Cayman Islands, just one little quake and it could become another water bourne island like Port Royal, Jamaica.

      That's only the meat we CAUGHT through limited, limited, limited inspections.

      We do not inspect 100 percent of all beef. We only have a very small handful of inspectors and we inspect -- what? -- maybe 10 percent? Less?

      So we can't assume the rest of the meat is "safe" because it basically hasn't been inspected at all.

    • 864,000 pounds doesn't seem so significant when considering the US produces over 26 Billion pounds of beef per year. That makes the 864K pounds of E.coli seasoned beef turn out to be about 0.003% of the US annual beef production. I don't have a beef with anyone, but I'm just saying people need to put things into perspective.

    • Can't we switch to Bison already??? Bison is a leaner meat & better for people!!! Also a ban on feeding animals a bunch of drugs MIGHT just be a good thing to do! Humans get enough drugs without them being in what we eat!!! The ways a lot of food items are processed really need to be looked at! This is not the first time something like this has happened & unless some changes are made,it will not be the last!

      Ted Turner owns a crapload of land and several herds of bison that are sustainably used as meat. For some reason eating cow (euphemized as beef of course) seems so much easier when it's been enforced as culturally acceptable for so many years. But you're right, things have to change.

      I'm going to have to call bullshit on you there. Obesity is caused by eating too much in general, not too much of one particular nutrient. You take away the protein, they will just replace it with something else. Obesity cannot be traced to any one culprit other than the lies that Americans commonly call food.

      You cannot cram that many cows into that confined an area! Disease and bacterial infections are inevitable.

      Now toss in only having a handful of meat inspectors in the US -- far too few to actually inspect most of the factories and the meat itself -- and these kind of outbreaks are a mathematical certainty....aren't they?
