The remains of Leonardo da Vinci are to be exhumed by a group of scientists who plan to reconstruct his face to discover whether his famed masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, is a self-portrait in disguise.
A team of art historians and scientists from Italy's National Committee for Cultural Heritage, has requested that his tomb at Amboise Castle in the Loire valley be opened.
Anthropologist Giorgio Gruppioni, hopes the project will throw new light on the Renaissance painter's most celebrated portrait.
'If we manage to find his skull, we could rebuild Leonardo's face and compare it with the Mona Lisa' he said.

    • First thing ...Leonardo is not buried in his grave... during the french revolution his graveyard was dug up to get the lead from the caskets to make bullets... after the revolution some scholars were seeking his bones to rebury them.... they used non-scientific methods to determine which bone were his...such largest head since he was so smart etc... but if they have some other true family members and there is DNA they could match it up.... They were be smarter to say they are looking for his DNA to provhis painting since Leonardo used his bodily fluids in the making of his paints... thereby instead of finger prints we could use dna suspended in layers of paint to prove his masterpieces... visit www.leonardoshands for more research

    • Isn't there something a little bit disrespectful about this? Is it really worth digging up a dead guy and gawping at his face just to see if it gives a clue to another Mona Lisa mystery? He's done plenty of self-portraits. Why not use one of those?
