Send California inmates to Mexico, says Schwarzenegger

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested California could ease its crowded prison system by sending thousands of undocumented inmates to specially built jails in Mexico.

Speaking to reporters at the Sacramento Press Club, Schwarzenegger said California could ease its strained finances by a billion dollars if 20,000 illegal immigrants currently held in the state were housed across the border.

"I think that we can do so much better in the prison system alone if we can go and take, inmates for instance, the 20,000 inmates that are illegal immigrants that are here and get them to Mexico," Schwarzenegger said.

"Think about it -- if California gives Mexico the money. Not 'Hey, you take care of them, these are your citizens'. No. Not at all.

"We pay them to build the prison down in Mexico. And then we have those undocumented immigrants down there in prison. It would half the costs to build the prison and run the prison. We could save a billion dollars right there that could go into higher education."

    • Why not? When they get out, they can go directly to work at the American businesses already operating there. Better way to ease the crowding in prison systems? Let the potheads out. Those there for pot crimes, out. Those there due to probation violations such as failing a marijuana test, let em out. LEGALIZE IT, ARNOLD! At this point it would be the only good thing you did for California.

    • The World is Filled with Idiots.... Sending them Back to Mexico for Simply Being immigrants and Incarcerating them back in the Place they Were trying to Escape from so as to NOT End up in Prison is Simply Ridiculous... its the Year 2010... i understand that in the Past 100 Years we as a Society have Developed Morals and Ethics and Even Though it was oK to Kill innocent Black People and ignorant Natives and Enslave Countless of Human Lives and Execute anyOne Who Apposed their Thoughts and oR ideas of the One we All Called God oR Even for announcing that the World could not be Flat... Yet if a Rapist oR a Murderer Rapes and Murders and innocent Victim oR a Mindless Worthless Waste of Air and Space Decides to End the Life of someone Who was Simply trying to Live their own and Happened to be at the Wrong place at a Wrong time... We Have to be Polite and Spend Thousands of Dollars "which by the Way is Also a Waste of Time" to Have them Go to Countless Trials and Mistrials simply to be Awarded the RIGHT the LIVE their Lives Even though its behind Bars its all a Waste... i Say we Get Rid of The Waste all Together Forever like we Used to but Better... with a Reason with a Unanimous Decision in some kind of Over all Trial... and Kill the Killers... the Rapist... the Drug Lords... the Weapons Dealers... Everyone and Anyone Not in touch with what it Means to Be Human... to Have Morals... Believes, Hopes Wishes Ideas... to be Allowed to Live Free... with no Worries... oR Dispositions...

    • Mexico for Mexicans, Usa for Americans. If the Mexicans want to take over California by sheer population there will be another holocaust for sure.

    • I wonder will the higher education include information on the land now claimed as California was stolen from Indigenous peoples, both Spanish and other language-speaking?

Will there also be curricula concerning the many German, Eastern European and Southeast Asian immigrants' legal status and development around finding a solution to send them back as well?

    • It seems to me the longer one is rich and powerful the dumber they get. They seem to loose their touch with common sense, reality, and the people they are representing. I think power should be granted for only one term, no chance of reelection, per person so no one's head inflates.

    • Like most world countries Mexico is also having an over crowding problems in prisons, so the government there might like the investment in construction, or not like the idea of more inmates being transferred over.

Plus if it is mainly inmates for illegal immigration, wouldn't California still have to hold and process the people, before sending them over to another prison across a border?

    • OR you could legalize Cannabis and stop jailing people for possession and sale of the plant.

That should cut out about 20,000 inmates right there.

How about letting all the non-violent criminals do community service, probation, or parole? That should cut some more space down right there as well.

He's not exploring all his options; he's just saying "let's start building private prisons so we can put immigrants there". Then after American inmate repopulate the empty slots then they'll want to send them down there until they build another private prison.

Then again, he's a movie star bureaucrat, so he's not paid to think; he's paid to be popular.

    • I agree with JonRaymond in regards to the victim- less/drug- related incarcerated folk; just let em go, F it. By by! As for the rest that fall into the group that could be sent to Mexico,....send em. (IF its cheaper). If you cant shoot em,...and you dont want to join em,....mail em bulk rate.

    • Hey! I bet in time prisoners will be our #1 export! We don't seem capable of too much other than obscene numbers of arrests, but it doesn't seem right that we have to pay Mexico to take back their own citizens. I guess we want Mexico to keep them locked up so they don't come back in 3 months and it seems like it must be a pretty poor country (I've never been there, so I don't know) so they can't build their own prisons, or hire their own police force to arrest and/or beat them into submission, add to that the sheer volume of illegals coming over and there doesn't seem to be any other conclusion.
Or maybe they have plenty of prisons, but they're all full, after all they do rank 3rd for largest prison populations in countries with over 100 million inhabitants Mexico has 162,372 inmates, giving a total of 155 per 100,000 inhabitants. During Ernesto Zedillo’s government, Mexico’s prison population grew 10% a year. That rate has fallen a bit under Fox, to 7.5% a year. Want to hear something disturbing? In the United States there are 701 prisoners for every 100,000 inhabitants, in Russia, 606. In contrast, Brazil has 140, and China 117. India, with its much larger population, has 304,000 prisoners but only 29 for every 100,000. I stole these statistics from envio.org, just in case you thought I got bored and counted myself.
Now I'm going to go into some taboo territory and suggest that we use them for free labor. Why not? If we're not letting them go free and clear, and we have to pay Mexico to take them back we should get something profitable out of the bargain, right? Maybe? Too much like slave labor? Allright... Now, another topic: why don't we have more Chinese prisoners? After all, the population of illegal Chinese immigrants is growing much faster than Mexican immigrants, especially in California. Is this a sign of deeply ingrained racial profiling? And what is this crap about using the money saved on housing prisoners being used for higher education when we know (or I know anyway) that America imports it's educated people? It's a lot cheaper to let another country teach them, then simply let them cross our borders and take some test and give them their license for whatever then to actually invest in our own citizens. Bitches think that just because our school systems suck that we're not smart. C'mon!

    • Seems a bit short sighted. Why just Mexico? If you are going to entertain that line of thinking why not set up prisons in Siberia, Western China, Central Asia, and other parts of the world that are industrially stunted and put thousands of miles of open ocean between the prisoner and the U.S. Even if there is an escape or inadvertent release, it would be one hell of a long walk back to U.S. soil.

    • Inmates too expensive eh? How about not having so many of them? I mean, in particular, those nonviolent cannabis prisoners. How about giving them their freedom first.

    • Heck yeah!!! In the longer term, this will save us billions. It's not just about the costs of incarceration, but the costs of reoffenders--the costs of parole/probation programs, rehab, etc. Ultimately, it's time for Mexico to pay the price for having promoted illegal immigration to the U.S. for decades. We build the prisons, they provide the meals, etc.

    • Of course, actually enforcing border security would be FAR TOO PRACTICAL!

Instead, we need to provide amnesty and entitlements to illegals because it's the politically correct thing to do, no matter how insane!

if mexico excepts than they can soak up US tax paying money for and keep the inmates for a fraction of the cost.... its a win win situation! But how do we decide who gets to stay in a california jail?

    • 1 billion dollars divided by 20,000 inmates is 50,000 dollars per inmate.... that is more than the average person in california makes, how about we spend a billion dollars on a wall? or 20 billion on some massivly redundant goverment style wall that makes crossing the boarder into a buracratic nightmare like the dmv, hell you could even let the union run it too.....

and besides they will just fill that spot right back up with americans anyhow thus still needing a billion dollars, this isnt a solution, its a card trick.

now, if i had to pay to send an illegal immigrant back to mexico, i want the MOST bang for my buck, dont drop them off at the boarder so they can do a U TURN later that day or next week, i say fly them back to the southern most boarder in mexico, thats right i said it.

im not a biggot, so hush your face before you cry foul.

the reason i say that is, i live in california, i see the issues in our state first hand, i already pay alot in taxes i am fuming mad that california is nearly 20 billion dollars in debt, we are taxed to the hilt, and and taxes are bound to go up if they do we will easily be taxed 50% or more, why should i haft to pay 50% of my LIFE for all the dependants in wellfare land, i dont mind lending a helping hand to those in need, but when people stop trying to strive and work in life they do not need to drag me down with them.

we have had to fire people just to stay in business, WE DO NOT HAVE ANY PLANS TO HIRE IN THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE, we are even considering leaving the state as soon as we can, which is a shame considering our plans for the last ten years have basicly been smashed with this economic downturn.

stop wasting our money and our lives, for all of our sakes....

You were an "Illegal Immigrant" at one time.

I'm sorry, but Why not talk with Mexico about this issue? They're coming over for a reason, perhaps we should do something to help their desire to stay in their point of origin?

Hell, One of our Ex Governors lives in the Baja 6 months out of the year... It can't be THAT bad.

I think that if California legalizes weed it may help repair this issue. More Mexicans will stay home to grow the stuff, and then they can legally export it to the US. Therefore creating revenue for them and giving an booster to the local economy. Not only that, but most of your prisons are going to be empty. Prison is for violent criminals. Not potheads and people who sell pot. Tax those people. It's not difficult, and no slight of hand involved.

    • Well youre still spending money to have special jails built for them, so i dont see how this will save money or be profitable any time in the near future.
