• "Goldsmith said that when he told Tony Blair in 2002 that Blair would need a UN resolution to justify war against Iraq, his advice was "not terribly welcome".
• Goldsmith said that he originally thought it would be up to the UN security council - not individual governments - to decide whether Iraq was in material breach of UN resolutions.
• Goldsmith says that, on the basis of the intelligence briefing he received in the summer of 2002, he concluded that Iraq did not pose an imminent threat to the UK."
Former prime minister Tony Blair is scheduled for his hearing on Friday. Unless the US holds a similar inquiry into president Bush, and vice president Cheney's responsibility, this will be the closest the public gets to watching a leader forced to answer for his decisions leading up to the Iraq invasion.

is any one in the u.s. monitoring these hearings? the u.s. should be publically ashamed
for not holding like hearings with bush, cheney, rumsfeld. etc. and even colin powell who lost all of his so-called credibility...when he knew better. - 2 years ago

my sense is 'no balls'. if the Republicans were in power now, and there was an outrage like this committed by a previous Democrat president, there would be congressional hearings, subpoenas, etc. (remember what they did to clinton over a BJ). one of pelosi's first statements as Speaker was "this is off the table." the 'state of the union' speech was the first time that i heard obama refer to 'what he inherited.' the sense is to do anything
comparable to the u.k. would 'further divide the country.' the fact that cheney, bush, etc.
were allowed to retreat to texas with bags of money has seriously destroyed our foreign relations, and will only result in elevated terrorist attacks, which will be blamed on obama.
you just can't kill that many people, Muslim or otherwise, without consequences. the innocent iraqi people saw their country leveled and thousands of their people murdered for no reason. - 2 years ago

Why is this not the leading story on Current.com or any other major network? OH Wait , maybe they are waiting for Tony Blair to testify so they can go all paparazzi on it. Hopefully this will lead to the execution of the american dictator George Bush and his minions. Just like Sadaam

hi thestick. i think this was the leading story on current in the UK yesterday. obviously it is in all of the papers here (i'm in London). is it not getting coverage in the US?
why won't obama put rumsfield, cheney, etc. before a hearing? i don't understand it. is it because so many democrats supported the war?
blair on friday is a big deal for us. but you are right, there will be a lot of fluffy coverage.

Saw this in the times article.
"American government lawyers helped to persuade Lord Goldsmith to give Tony Blair the “green light” for the Iraq war just weeks before the invasion, it emerged today.
Lord Goldsmith said that guidance from Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary had also been crucial in changing his own advice to the Prime Minister in late February 2003."
The evidence over the last few weeks from lawyers etc, has been interesting and makes me wonder what will happen with Blairs appearance this Friday.
