China to ban eating dogs, cats

FIRST ANIMAL ABUSE LAW WILL TAKE DOGS, CATS OFF THE MENU

China plans to end thousands of years of culinary tradition by taking dogs and cat meat off its menu. A law being drafted against animal abuse—China's first—calls for the country's thousands of dog butchers and dog meat restaurants to be closed down. Stiff fines will be imposed on anybody caught eating dog or cat meat, the Times of London reports.

The debate over eating dogs and cats has sparked fierce disagreements between the affluent, pet-owning middle classes and sticklers for traditional values. Dog meat is a traditional winter dish and practitioners of Chinese medicine extol its health benefits. Cat meat is less widely eaten—largely due to a superstition that holds the cat will return by night to seek vengeance—although it remains popular among the famously omnivorous residents of Guangdong province.

    • Ugh, what's the point? People still eat ducks, chickens, cows, pigs, etcetera etcetera etcetera. What makes one animal worthy of saving and not others? Hate this crap.

Uh, have you ever had pet ducks? No animal really makes a "good pet". They're wild, I think most domesticated animals just put up with us because they've become reliant on us for food or they realize it's an easier life to let us pet them in exchange for free room and board, safety from predators, free poo clean up and, occassionally, a scratch behind the ear.

all animals deserve our respect and love, I think saying that this is pointless is a stupid remark, saving a single life can make a world of difference! if it was your life I am sure you would feel a hell of a lot different about this new law...

Exactly... as someone has already pointed out, Pig's are more intelligent than dog's yet I don't see a call for them to be taken off the menu. Heck, the Hindu's believe the cow to be sacred and we, general we, eat them like it's a necessity.

I reckon this is just China attempting to appear 'modern' by caving into Western ideas of food related decency.

      More WORTHY?!??!?

      What?

All life is equal and, therefore, "worthy" of being allowed to live. Of the human species, I'm not always finding those who are as intelligent as, say, a dolphin. And there are those of us who are "protesting" the killing and eating of ANY animals.

I agree to extent. I mean, cultural or not, eating a dog or cat is just something I find repulsive. However in this country, though we argue the sanctity of life for our domesticate pet, we marginally are hypocritically. Only in the Westernize, or culturalize, world do we allow our children to be entertained and educated by cartoon caricatures of rabbits, bulls, cows, and chickens, and then turn face and systematically massacre these same personified caricatures for the sake of "sustenance and taste."

I don't find this appealing..it's misleading. I also find eating a dog or cat horrible, and painful..
