Obama: "One Year Later" Challenge

- added this
Using the speech as a jumping point, what do you think of Obama after his first year in office? Is it different than how you felt a year ago? Have you given up hope on the politician who made hope a campaign promise, or are you still optimistic?
Write up your answer in whatever form you want- persuasive essay, epic poem, Shakespearean sonnet, etc - and submit it to the Creative Writing and US Politics groups as a SEPARATE POST. (Creative Writing: http://current.com/groups/creative-writing/ US Politics: http://current.com/groups/us-politics/) Get feedback from the community and at the end of February, one writer will be dubbed champ and receive some free swag! (Ahem: this challenge is not "officially" endorsed by Current.com, Current TV, their affiliates or anyone else who might have some legal concerns. Swag is provided and privately funded by DeliaTheArtist, not the aforementioned parties. Word.)
We hope that the State of the Union address inspired you to have your voice heard and look forward to the entries for this political challenge!

I'll be writing an entry as well, however I'm disqualified from winning as I'm a co-sponsor of this little project.

I really like this idea, and am very interested in what people will have to say. I know I certainly have a lot of thoughts running through my head on this topic.

Dagum - Yes I'm providing the swag; they are basically little art gifts, maybe a CD or something; I email the winners of the challenges and ask them what they are into and things like that so that the swag is more personal. I don't have a bag of swag ready to go or anything, they are "made to order", if you will.

Two questions:
Delia are you Really providing free Swag for this contest?
And does that "free swag" constitute hope and change T -shirts?
Regardless I like the idea of the contest.

Yes, she really is providing that swag, and I highly doubt the swag will involve hope and change t-shirts.

I see we have a lot of people who are disenchanted with Obama. I hope some of you will write a larger piece to enter into this challenge! Were you guys in favor of Obama, but changed your minds? Did you always think he'd be no good? Have you been jaded by American politics for so long he never stood a chance, or are you jaded because of the year you've seen?

there used to be a sign over Truman's desk that said: "The buck stops here."
Obama's sign would be very different: "Any buck that stops here will be promptly spent"

A year later and politics as usual. He is spending us into the abyss. I had hoped that something would be different. The only thing that is different about Obama is the color of his skin. I see little change between Bush and Obama. We are still in a war for all the wrong reasons, we are still Trillions of dollars in debt with no way out and we are still looking at unemployment and taxes going up. It is a "Sad State" of the Union.

A president should be judged by his actions and not his words. While Obama is very well spoken he really has not done or attempted to do the things that he said he would. A few examples: He has made no attempt to repeal NAFA as he promised. He spoke out against the patriot act then voted to extend it. He promised not to raise taxes if you make less than 250k per year but he just got back from copenhagen to discuss a carbon tax. He promised to close Guantanamo by now and it is still up and torturing. He promised not to allow lobbyists in his cabinet but they are very much a part of his advising staff. He just elected a former Monsanto exec to the head of the FDA. If you are fooled by his eloquent speeches then keep to yourself. It is better to be thought dumb and remain silent than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!

disagree: he is NOT well spoken. He READS a mean teleprompter, but when he is no longer reading the script that was provided to him, he reveals that he has a mediocre intellect at best.

Interesting! Obama is just one guy I can't seem to give up on. Just when I think he's down for the fight, he comes right back with all he's got.
After becoming pessimistic over the results this past year, his new speech reassured me that he was still fighting for what we elected him. I might give it a try if I'm not too busy!
His message of renewal is a metaphor for the type of politician he is. I don't think many people thought he'd give the inspiring and hard hitting speech he gave today after the tough year we went though in 2009. But I guess he's too tough to give up...

so after "becoming pessimistic over the results this past year," which i'm assuming is based completely upon his actions, you are convinced things are going to change because of a speech that he gave?

he's neither a leader nor a scholar: he's a scheister. A flim-flam artist. A snake-oil salesman. In short: a lawyer (pronounced "liar", same thing).
Urban, my friend, I have found that I agree with about 99.9% of what you've posted on Current and I like and respect you, so I don't mean to antagonize, this is my opinion about Obama so don't take it personally please.
I am a firm believer in the addage: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
Obama has a long, undeniable record of speaking out of both sides of his mouth. He will say he is NOT in favor of government run healthcare on Monday to one group, and then admit that this would be his long term goal if he could do it on Tuesday. He's done this on so many topics it's astonishing. Guantanamo, Iraq, Afghanistan, tax-hikes, tax-cuts, first he's against lobbyists and then he hires them, my Lord I can't keep up.
At this point, we'd be fools to give him the benefit of the doubt. From here on, Barry is going to have to PROVE that he means what he says, but up until now he has PROVEN that his word means nothing.
