Three children have been left orphaned after their parents' car was hit by a driver who jumped a set of lights during a high speed police chase.
The children - the eldest of whom is understood to be 14 - were waiting at home for their parents when police officers arrived to break the tragic news.
The husband and wife were aged 54 and 49 respectively and were understood to be from Reading, Berkshire.
The collision took place along this stretch of road. A car being chased by police crashed into another vehicle killing two people
A 31-year-old driver was spotted by officers going through a set of red traffic lights and then accelerated away when they told him to pull over.
Following a short chase in Reading the speeding Ford Mondeo ploughed into the back of a Chevrolet Matiz, killing the husband and wife.
Police immediately arrested the driver of the Mondeo on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Sources said the mother worked as a teacher at a local school in Reading.
Investigators were examining both the junction of Castle Hill and Tilehurst Road where the car jumped the lights and the junction with Western Elms Avenue where the collision took place.
Because of the police's involvement in the incident the Independent Police Complaints Commission is also assessing the incident that took place at 11.18pm.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: 'A patrolling police vehicle saw a Ford Mondeo car drive through a red traffic signal at the junction of Castle Hill and the Tilehurst Road.
'Following the illumination of blue lights on the police vehicle the Mondeo accelerated away.
'A short distance later, at the junction with Western Elms Avenue, the Mondeo collided with the rear of a small hatchback car which had been travelling in the same direction, resulting in the death at the scene of the occupants, a local man and his wife.'
The Mondeo driver is being held at Loddon Valley Police Station.
Police are yet to identify the dead couple, but next of kin have been informed and are being supported by family and a police family liaison officer.
IT trainer Jonathan Oppenheim, 43, who lives about 200m from the crash scene, was unaware of last night's tragedy until he walked past the area this morning.
"I did say to myself "What on earth has happened here?"' he said. 'When I crossed the road I noticed a burnt-out area on the road and the path. There was also a distinct smell of smoke.
There was no wreckage left at the scene this morning.'
Mr Oppenheim said he did not know the people involved but added: 'My heart goes out to their family.'
